She already has a quartet record on Avant, apparently she was going to
put it out herself and Zorn just jumped on it (don't know if it's hit
the streets yet, but you can order it from www.jennyscheinman.com).
And a Radical Jewish Culture record is indeed on the way...

Re: Louis Sclavis, he is on a fantastic record that's out of print by the
'Double Trio" (the Trio of Clarinets & Arcado String Trio together). I know
they had it at Aomeba Records in San Francisco, so you can order it, maybe.
It's called GREEN DOLPHY STREET. The compositions are by the players. One
track is better than the next... The Sclavis tune is beautiful, with a
flamenco-like 'cello solo by Ernst Reijeger.
Cheers,

Hello,
After some confusion concerning the "chadbox" (some zornlisters got
different replies that I did from Dr. Chadbourne), I sent him an email, and
I got a reply.... and now I see what happened: there are two releases called
"chatterbox"!!!
Although a "chadbox" is the complete collection and "chatterbox" are just
two releases from the house of chadula, Eugene is willing to expand the
meaning of the word "chadbox"... meaning you can choose wich cds you would
like to have in your personal chadbox.
Best wishes

Thanks for explanation. What I had discussed with some of the other regular
customers was customized Chadboxes, one guy wanted the complete Eddie
Chatterbox collection, etc. I still think this is a good idea, each person
could choose what would be in the box.
Glad you enjoyed the stuff and keep in touch!

Just around the corner at Rhiz there's also an excellent jazz store. A
lot of Japanese imports + vinyl.

I went there last Month, and what I've heard it still takes place every
week. It's called 'Volkstanz' and indeed is a nice way to question the
current political situation. After all this events takes place in the
backyard of the Austrian government.

Peter: Who was Lee on cello I wonder? Was she Peggy Lee or somebody else?
Kurt: Naw, somebody else. An Asian woman, classical player. This was her first
downtown, or whatever y'wanna call it, gig, I'm given to understand. Wish I'd
caught her name. She was doing some nice stuff.
Jason: It is strange that a lot of the downtowners still play at the KF and give
dorf praise.
Kurt: I don't know. For one thing, I don't think you can criticize any musician
for taking a gig, even if -- if -- it's one at a high profile club that doesn't
pay and has a good chance for bad sound. I know of one pretty well-known
downtown player who quit playing there years ago, and won't even set foot in the
place, because of the way musicians were treated, and his ban began well before
Zorn's (not that it's a contest).
Marc Ribot, on the other hand, still plays there, and he's very concerned about
musicians' rights and is an active member of the Noise Action Coalition, an
informal union of musicians that has worked to get guarantees higher during the
Knit jazz fest and has pushed to get musicians paid at Arlene Grocery, for
examples.
In other words, how bad the Knit is is a matter of opinion, and an individual's
reaction is a matter of choice.
Or in other other words, it's easier for someone who's career is in a position
like Lurie's is to fuck dorf off.
Marcin: Would anybody agree with me that Filmworks II is the best JZ album ever?
Kurt: Wow. No.

fairly well, wondering how often I'd really listen to it, and still interested

Not sure of the time frame, but Peggy Lee was
definitely at the Guelph Jazz Festival, from which I
just returned, all day Friday, September 9, playing in

Considering how hard it is for Canadian performers to
get across the "undefended" US border, it may not have
been her at Cobra.

I saw Louis with a larger group do his Violence de

EuroJazz, a little classical and a bit jazzy. I also
saw him duet with Ernst Reijseger, which was great.
Therefore the recommended CD is:

Subject: Miller Theatre (attn: NYC contemporary classical fans)
Hi, Z-listers:
For those not in New York, I apologize in advance for the waste of
space. For those in New York, I just had to post this.
A couple of days ago I got a copy of the program for the 2000-2001
season at the Miller Theatre at Columbia University. And I just have to
say that it's been a really long time since I've received a calendar
that made me want to attend virtually everything on offer. Almost every
single program in the season is of some interest to me, with the
exception of the jazz series, which, as much as I may personally enjoy
Etta Jones and Fred Hersch, is remarkably boring compared to the
maverick vision behind the "classical" programming. But then, where is
that NOT the case amongst institutional theaters? Someday they might
learn that offering a bit of bebop does not instill the same edginess
quotient as presenting the quite adventurous "classical" offerings that
follow... but until then, alas...
Anyway, you can see the whole season's programming at
http://www.millertheatre.com/ but here are a few (!) of the things that
made me take note (and NO, I don't work for anyone listed prior or
hereafter...):
Season opener: William Schuman Award Concert: Honoring Steve Reich
9/21 Steve Reich and Musicians play Drumming Part 1, Sextet and Music
for 18 Musicians
9/23 Steve Reich and Musicians play Music for Pieces of Wood, Different
Trains and Music for 18 Musicians
Composer Portraits
9/28 Louis Andriessen - Workers Union, Nietzsche Redet, Tao
10/5 Luciano Berio - Folk Songs, Linea; Giorgio Battistelli - Oriazi e
Curiazi, Il y a un firmament
11/15 Jean Barraque - Sonate pour piano, Etude, Sequence
1/26 Sebastian Currier - Verge, Frames; Ornette Coleman - Trinity, In
Honor of NASA
2/10 Maurizio Kagel - excerpts from Die Stucke der Windrose and other
works
2/22 Karlheinz Stockhausen - Kontakte, Tierkreis, Klavierstucke IX
5/24 Steve Reich Redux: chamber versions of Tehillim and The Desert
Music
Group Shots
10/3 eighth blackbird plays David Lang, George Crumb, Frederick Rzewski,
Joan Tower, etc.
10/27 Absolute Ensemble plays the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, John Adams,
Miles Davis, Steve Reich, Marc Anthony Turnage
2/17 Absolute Ensemble plays John Adams, Django Bates, Michael
Daugherty, Charles Mingus, James MacMillan, Steve Reich, etc.
String Quartets
3/3 Penderecki Quartet plays Penderecki (Quartets 1 & 2) and Szymanowski
(Quartets 1 & 2)
3/24 Keller Quartet plays Ligeti (Quartets 1 & 2) and Kurtag (Officium
breve in memoriam Andreae Szervanszky, Quartetto per archi)
3/30 Parisii Quartet plays Boulez (The Book for String Quartet)
4/7 Flux Quartet plays Roscoe Mitchell, Bill Viola, John Zorn and Iannis
Xenakis
Piano Revolution
10/12 Marilyn Nonken plays Charles Ives (Concord Sonata) and Michael
Finnissy (North American Spirituals, Kemp's Morris)
12/2 Sarah Cahill plays Leo Ornstein (Suicide in an Airplane, A Morning
in the Woods) and George Antheil (Airplane Sonata, Sonata Sauvage)
2/3 Christopher Taylor plays Olivier Messiaen's Vingt Regards sur
l'Enfant Jesus
3/20 Lisa Moore plays Gyorgy Ligeti (Piano Etudes, MusicaRicercata) and
Martin Bresnick (For the Sexes: The Gates of Paradise)
And gosh, there's a lot more... a pair of concerts overseen by Helmut
Lachenmann (who will be present and performing) in April... an evening
of "Contemporary Landmarks" on 10/10 by Elliott Carter (a U.S.
premiere), Edgard Varese, Iannis Xenakis and Tristan Murail... a pairing
of Bach and Ustvolskaya keyboard works in April... hell, even a complete
performance of Vivaldi's L'Estro Armonico, Op. 3 on period instruments
in January and March, not to mention a period-instruments performance of
trio sonatas by Arcangelo Corelli on 11/15 by a group called... I kid
you not... Louis Louis.
Like I said, I've seldom been so blown away by the offerings of a single

they could be doing... but is anyone else doing this much anywhere in
the USA? Or elsewhere?
