I was in Vienna this summer, meeting many of the interesting
musicians over there (Pita, Radian etc.) Anyway, the place to go to
is Rhiz (www.rhiz.org). Cool dj's every night, plus really interesting
performances. Ikue Mori teamed up with Fennesz last week.

I very nice recordstore is Rave Up Records: lots of electronic stuff
and a special Vienna-section. The best place to buy music though
is the Mego-office (their mdos mailorder is located at
www.mdos.at).

Pretty much.  On the first one, Willner created thematic "suites" of bits and
pieces.  John Zorn, who was involved in the project initially, reportedly
dropped out because he felt they shouldn't be chopped up (ironic, huh?).
The second volume contains mostly full scores.

It is strange that a lot of the downtowners still play
at the KFand give dorf praise. I was at the BAJF this
summer seeing E# and sex mob in the courtyard of the
worldtrade center. Not only was the crowd management
too extreme but the sound was horrible. Sex Mob was so
poorly mixed the sound guy thought that he was doing a
rock concert. The bass was totally cranked and blew
one of the speakers in the first tune, and continued
to buzz the entire time. I was surprise to hear
berstein elaborate on what a great organization the KF
is and how dorf is such a great guy. Either bernstein
is nice to get more gigs [they were the tab bar band
for a year or so] or doesnt agree with lourie and his
hatred for the KF.

Incidently, a few friend of mine used to record live
acts at the KF all the time, they have few fond words
for dorf and his organization.

Lourie is right, the venue is a painful one to
navigate if you are seeing more than one show there in
a night. Just getting in the door and downstairs into
the tap bar is impossible.

i was there last night as well, for the second (short) set. i've seen cobra a
number of times, though not a huge number. last night was probably the most
musically interesting round i've seen, perhaps because the musicians seemed more
into playing with each other and following the prompts than wresting control of
the proceedings (which is also fun, but i suspect that's the part that gets lost
on record).

i also got to sit to the side, so i could see all of the prompts as they were
displayed. basically numbers and letters and a slow fade out card and a sudden
stop card. couldn't decodify the meanings but it was instructive to see what
patterns repeat with which prompts.

but that all's kinda beside the point. it's interesting, but i think sometimes
too much energy is spent breaking the code and not enough thinking about whether
or not something interesting has been produced. last night it very much was.

Cromwell is no more a rock drummer than wfmu is a rock station, if you don't
mind my saying. she was in dim sum clip job (avant release) and performs
regularly with dscj saxist gordon knauer (who plays under the name dorgon or mr.
dorgon now). she also presented a pretty remarkable ensemble piece last year at
roulette that reminded me somewhat of zorn's extended fast-cut pieces.

she is a pretty powerful drummer, and i wouldn't be surprised if she's done some
rocking out as well.

last night might have actually been a good one for cd release.

ok, now the last thing in the world anyone would accuse me of is being an
apologist for Michael Dorf, but this is just silly. maybe it's true during
the two weeks of the festival, but during the rest of the year, it involves
successfully navigating a staircase.

Considering the NOW Orchestra will play in Montreal next Tuesday, I guess
Peggy Lee makes a lot of sense. However, I was not there and I could

I'd highly recommend Julie Tippetts' "Sunset Glow", recorded in 1975 and
reissued on disc within the last year. One of my favorite "pop song"
records ever, to the extent that it qualifies as such.

Well-Tuned Piano' 5CD boxed set has been put up on napster.

If you type "la monte young" into the artist part of the search
engine
you should see the 5 discs... if a user with them is online at that
moment.

I've seen them there mostly in the evening.

I've been listening to the first couple of discs (the download time
is
 huge, obviously) and I'm quite impressed...

I'd rather be listening to Morton Feldman tho :)

There is a beautiful little record store which name I have forgotten... it=

is located at the "Judenplatz" in the "1. Bezirk", the inner city; you=20
can't miss it. They are specialized on jazz, with a nice electronics=20
department and a huge avant department; Tzadik, Avant, everything.=20
Competent guys.

Every saturday afternoon, there is an open air electronic party on the=20
"Heldenplatz" between town hall and Burgtheater where I work a couple of=20
times each month - but not for the last three months because of the theatre=
=20
holidays; thus I don't know if this regular event still takes place. It is=
=20
meant to be a demo against the new worryingly right wing Austrian=20
government (which is, beside other unpleasant things, outspokenly=20
anti-avant-art) and frequently features such vienna electronic grands as=20
Kruder & Dorfmeister. By the way, an interesting 68-like atmosphere where=20
you can observe the virgin political conciousness of Austrian people which=
=20
have ever been living in an apolitical milieu until the recent government=20
participation of the populistic FP=D6 with their charismatic=20
chief-propagandist J=F6rg Haider.

the duo with Ernst Reijseger on FMP, Et On Ne Parle Pas Du Temps, is superb,
but I don't think it's very typical of his work.

I think there is a cd with Kadosh music, but not sure ....
Otherwise, Trio de Clarinettes on FMP, with Jacques Di Donato & Armand
Angster, all 3 on clarinet and / or bass clarinet  is great, the freest
thing I know from him. BTW, I would not say it is in a kletzmer mood ...
My other favorite is Chine on IDA, excellent "chamber jazz", unfortunatel=
y
OOP. Rouge on ECM, is in the same mood with the same line up (clarinets &
sopranosax, piano, violin, bass, drums), a bit under but not bad ...
Another one with a slightly different line up is Acoustic Quartet with
Pifarely (violin), Marc Ducret (guitar) and Chevillon (bass), not one of =
my
favorites.
And one of his last cd Suite Africaine with Henri Texier (bass), Aldo Rom=
ano
(drums), inspired by their trip in Africa (with a 100 pages booklet of
photographs by Guy Le Querrec who plays ... Leica),  had an intense
marketing here in France and was sold quite well ... more mainstream but
enjoyable ...
And there are many others I do not know: one tribute to Ellington, one wi=
th
Rameau tunes, one clarinet solo, Dance music, etc ......
