  42. Musically the NYJQ reunion is great. Trouble is that
  43. rather than being on just one track Amiri Baraka (then
  44. LeRoi Jones) is on nearly every one on the DIW disc.
  45. His poetry is best experienced in small doses, or at
  46. least not taking up much of the space that those of us
  47. who have waited 35 years to hear the band again  would
  48. rather be consecrated to the instrumentalists.
  49.  
  50. As for Graves. Check just about any ESP-DISk. He was
  51. on many of 'em -- most notably Paul Bley's Barrage and
  52. Lowell Davidson's trio session.

  77. Sorry for the off topic post of commercial nature but I thought I'd 
  78. give the fine group of zorn-listers the first shot at this item 
  79. before going to eBay with it.

  81. Sony TCD-D8 DAT Walkman.  I bought it new in December of 1999 and 
  82. have used it fewer than 30 times since then.  It's in very good 
  83. condition and I have taken good care of it.  I'll include all pieces 
  84. that came with it and the original box.  There is an AC adapter, a 
  85. leather case, a cleaning tape, and all the manuals.

  112. One of the best things I've heard this year (and I've heard lots).  I'm not a big O'Rourke fan, don't know much of his stuff, but based on this I may look deeper.
  113.  
  114. This is, for the most part, an extremely quiet album, with lots of subtle detail that reminds me more of something like the Stangl/Kurzmann Schnee album than a typical Gustafsson disc.  O'Rourke's playing incorporates lots of folk/blues elements, while Gustafsson generally eschews his usual audacious squeals and blurts (I'm not criticizing him by using the term audacious, I love that stuff for its extremeness).  There's a part about 5 minutes into the first track that has O'Rourke quietly plucking away while Gustafsson contributes some rapid-fire yet extremely low key reed pops that is worth the price of the disc on its own.

  143. yes. mary oliver. and damn, was it good. wish i coulda caught the first set,
  144. too. set 2 was a long, nice suite (rollo 1-5) composed by misha, with an encore
  145. of a composition (something about "spinning") by han. i'd never seen michael
  146. moore, ab baars, tristan holsinger(sp, i imagine), or any of the others of this
  147. fine band, and i was really in a joyous awe my calloused ears don't get enough
  148. of anymore. good stuff. guess i'll be stepping into the most obnoxious club in
  149. nyc (iridium, where they charge tax on the cover, thank you very much) to catch
  150. them again with dave douglas.

  175. reminds me why I quit paying any attention to any of the press releases by 
  176. labels with the Forced Exposure Approval Seal a couple of years ago. If 
  177. Gastr del Sol were Led Zeppelin ... hmmm, I don't think David Grubbs could 
  178. bring himself to even LISTEN to Led Zeppelin unless there were some ironic 
  179. veil he could invent through which to hear it. Or the person writing that 
  180. press release for that matter...

  385. devoted to eugene chadbourne. This zornlist is still the best place to
  386. discuss his activities, since a lot of zornlisters are familiar with his
  387. work (hello, William York!!!).

  389. But, it has to be mentioned that Eugene Chadbourne is a very accessible
  390. person. Just drop him an email and you will get a reply -most of the times-
  391. the next day. Funny to mention is that his wife and his daughter also
  392. replies when Eugene is on tour, and believe me, their answers are sometimes
  393. crazier than what "the doctor" says.

  395. But let me grap the opportunity to plug his own label (House of Chadula)

  399. cdr-s (at an incredible low price if you buy them in one time) containing a

  401. material.... featuring John Zorn, Derek Bailey, Mazzacane Connors,...).

  403. Just like the unique character of his music, the packaging is unique as
  404. well. My "chadbox" looked like this: all the cds were housed in a used
  405. shoebox (signed by the doctor off course). But the cdr-s also have an unique
  406. packaging: he starts from a colour print of a sleeve and
  407. glues-sticks-pins-... it on all sorts of found objects: cardbord -
  408. enveloppes - bills (I had a telephone bill from eugene chadbourne) - letters
  409. from fans - pictures from his family ... anyway the most craziest stuff I
  410. have ever seen.

  412. The result is great and clumsy at the same time. But it is great since every
  413. packaging is unique, no way this can be duplicated exactly twice.

  415. Eugene, wife and daughter even made pictures on the cd-r

  417. As you can see, I have never seen any other downtowner do something like
