  43. Presocratics 'Work and Days', (Table of the Elements, 72 Hafnium, 2000, cd)
  44. I read this promo for the Presocratics album on Table of the Elements,
  45. 'Work and Days':
  46. "If Gastr del sol were Led Zeppelin, then Presocratics are Black Sabbath.
  47. Or, in even more meaningless terms:  If Gastr del Sol were Nathaniel
  48. Hawthorne and the sophisticated moralism of his age, then presocratics are
  49. the autodidactic posturing of Edgar Allan Poe."
  50.  
  51. Well, I thought that was pretty kick-ass hype, so I purchased this cd based
  52. solely on that information (and of course based on the demonstrated
  53. reputation of Table of the Elements).
  54.  
  55. Well, I can tell you that, just as the press release indicated, the
  56. comparisons were meaningless, much less totally inaccurate.  The Black
  57. Sabbath reference suggested that Presocratics were going to be heavier than
  58. gastr del sol but in fact they are slightly mellower overall.  The
  59. principle difference is that Presocratics are much less melodic that gastr
  60. del sol.  gastr del sol incorporated blips and electronica into their music
  61. but they maintained a pop-like listenability. Presocratics does not have
  62. that listenability.  The disc is a mostly sparse collection of blips and
  63. tinkering, primarily without melody or lyrics.  
  64.  
  65. If I were to write a more accurate press release for them, it would go like
  66. this: "If Gastr del sol were Led Zeppelin, then Presocratics are gastr del
  67. sol."
  68.  
  69. That's about what is accurate.  The distance and direction between gastr
  70. del sol and Led Zeppelin is about the same as the distance and direction
  71. between presocratics and gastr del sol.  
  72.

  83. Well, there was a long string regarding this release but I didn't see too
  84. much discussion of the music, mostly proprietary rights, etc...  This is a
  85. review of the music only.

  87. Sound quality is not too good.  If you are going for a perfect tone in a
  88. drone but the sound quality is poor, then I don't know what is left.
  89. Stylistically, this cd seems not much different than Conrad's Early
  90. Minimalism Volume One (Table of the Elements, 33 Arsenic, 1997,
  91. cdx3+cdrom+book) and inferior to it, because of the sound quality.

  93. I think the best TOTE's Conrad releases should be ranked in this order
  94. (from best to worst)

  135.     I wasn't knocking tobacco advertising.  When I went to the Vancouver jazz 
  136. fest last year, I didn't even know what duMaurier was til I saw their cigs in 
  137. a store.  At all shows, only the name duMaurier appeared, with no pictures or 
  138. mention of their product.  How that will incite people to smoke is beyond me.
  139.     Replicating Canada's jazz fests in the bay area would be a tall order.  
  140. If Michael Dorf at KF's Hollywood branch is having a hard time getting avant 
  141. acts to come and fill up the calendar, what chance have I?  The main reasons 
  142. are geography and economics.  Who wants to travel thousands of miles to play 
  143. in one of the most expensive cities in the world with little or no prospect 
  144. of making money?  Answer:not many.  Most of the acts who play the SF jazz 
  145. fest were playing in the sixties.  So, no matter how good the artist is, they 
  146. have to have played for about 40 years before awareness of them trickles down 
  147. to the promoters.  When Tim Berne, Gerry Hemingway, Bobby Previte, or Ken 
  148. Vandermark  need a cane or walker to get on stage, they'll be eligible to 
  149. play at the SF jazz fest.  Promoters who know what time it is, like Dan 
  150. Plonsey or the Luggage Store promoters, have little or no funding.  Jazz is 
  151. not considered an art form to the people handing out arts dollars.  Its 
  152. easier to travel to Canada then make SF into Vancouver, Victoriaville, or 
  153. Guelph.  Don't take this as a tirade against you Ken.

  324. I don't know specifically how much of the Brotzmann tour was underwritten by
  325. Vandermark himself, but for sure part of it was.  He's said so publicly, and
  326. he's told me that in private conversation.  I have no reason to doubt him.
  327. Their playing the Vancouver fest may have meant that Vandermark didn't have to
  328. use as much of that MacArthur money as he would have without the fest--I don't
  329. know.  Or without the Vancouver booking, they might not have made it to the Left
  330. Coast at all.  Again, I don't know.

  398. a tour by a delightful employee who informed us that the ensemble refused to
  399. perform because the Knitting Factory had provided Misha with an ELECTRIC
  400. piano. There was also a sign saying that the upcoming Vic Chestnutt
  401. performances were cancelled, so the Knitting Factory is really making a
  402. great impression here in Southern California.

  593. interested in his playing at all you should definitly get it.  Also, the
