Talk with your internet service provider. They usually give customers a free
web page and have a tech support number that can explain how to upload and
layout images. I'd love to see these pictures! Zorn is so darn testy when it
comes to recording, videotaping and cameras that people usually can't get
away with it. I've seen him point people out and yell at them during a show!

Talking about music of the Balkans, I recently bought the very impressive cd of Theodosii Spassov Trio called 'The fish are praynig for rain' (on Traditional Crossroads).He plays traditional kaval doing a lot of (also quite occasional) jazz improv but the result is very interesting. Anything else by TS that could be found? Or other similar hybrids? I also see his name on the latest Trilok Gurtu albums.

IMHO the better introduction to Balkan music are magnificent samplers issued
by Network:
- -Balkan Blues /2CD/
- -Road of The Gypsies
- -Gypsy Queens
with very instructive booklets.
Especially the first the overview of all Balkan genres /brass bands,
Albanian overtone choirs, Bulgarian voices, Bulgarina wedding music/.
Worth checking is also Yuri Yunakov with CD's "New Colors In Bulgarian
Wedding" and "Balada - Bulgarian Wedding Music"

agreed, they were fucking great. very much an overwhelming experience.

tim was the highlight for me. he and matt seemed to play quite well together
(they've had enough experience). alan grew more enjoyable as the set went
along, and dean had his moments, tho he seemed most uncomfotable at all, not
that i could blame him w/ all that goddam feedback in the mic. they'll be
worth keeping an eye on, fer sure.

overall, a nice final show for me in nyc before heading back to
northampton...

fest happens as a result from a tobacco grant(DuMaurier).  I wish Phillip
Morris would give some money to put on shows like that down here.  Anyway, I
don't think the MacArthur grant anything to do with this.  If you know

    I haven't heard of this recording although a very thorough Sclavis
discography exists at www.netlaputa.ne.jp/~lili    This website is from Japan
but can be read in French as well.  A lot of Sclavis' recordings are hard to
find here since many of the labels don't seem to have American distributors.

Well, I was all stoked to see the ICP at the new Knitting factory in LA
(although the LA Times referred to them as the ISP in today's paper) so I
picked up 4 Ventura friends, and we made the trek to Hollywood to break in
the new Knitting Factory only to be greeted by a sign on the door saying
that the performance by the ICM (!) was cancelled. We went in and were given
a tour by a delightful employee who informed us that the ensemble refused to
perform because the Knitting Factory had provided Misha with an ELECTRIC
piano. There was also a sign saying that the upcoming Vic Chestnutt
performances were cancelled, so the Knitting Factory is really making a
great impression here in Southern California.

On a side note: They had to quit selling ICP tickets online because of so
much confusion by people thinking they were indeed buying tickets to see the
Insane Clown Posse.

Yes, I assume it's true since the NY Times reviewed the show a few days ago.
It may be available on their site (nytimes.com) if you look around.  Also,
in the gossip department: my friend who works at a studio in NYC told me
today that Ray Davies and Yo la are coming in there to record soon.  I have
no idea if/when anything will be released, though.

Sorry you missed the show...but did you still get a chance to buy an
overpriced beer at their snazzy bar?  Did you get over to their merchandise
booth to buy an official Knitting Factory(tm) t-shirt or hat?  Did you get to
park in the parking lot only to find out you won't be validated by the KF (on
the other hand, if you buy a less-expensive movie ticket in the same
building, you will get validated).  Did you get to use one of their dozen or
so corporate-sponsored computer terminals (believe me, you woulda been one of
the first)?

Hey, don't get me wrong, i appreciate venues that will stage acts such as Sun
Ra's Arkestra, Dave Douglas, and Nels Cline, but I don't feel comfortable
walking into a place that feels like Disneyland where all they're worried
about is how much money i'm about to spend.  Michael Dorf seems to me to be a
perplexing man.

Yes, duMaurier *gave* (note the past emphasis) money
to various jazz festivals throughout Canada. But as of
this year, because of anti-tobacco advertising
legislation, the company will no longer fund
festivals. No promo = no $$$.

Thus all Canadian festival are seeking alternate
funding.

Judging from Kool ciggies support of "Newport" in the
1970s, I'm sure Philip Morris would want the same
deals duMaurier got -- maximum exposure with minimum
investment.

Furthermore the music in any venue depends on the
booker. Vancouver was the most adventurous major
Canadian fest(and balanced it with
more-than-mainstream stuff as well). Others were very
mainstream.

Furthermore the most adventurous booking in Canada has
either come from people with no -- or very minimal --
tobacco attachements such as the Festival
International de Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville,
Que. or the upcoming Guelph (Ontario) Jazz Festival or
from individual promoters in Toronto and other places.

In other words if you want different music, get
together, get a space and some money and bring it in.
