I listened to a couple of cuts off his recent release called "Muy
Divertido" (I may be wrong on the title, though) and wasn't really impressed
by it. I really wasn't sure what he was going for on that album. That's
just me.

I couldn't agree with you more. I also don't like Never Again, mainly
because my ears can't take the prolonged exposure to the high frequency
sound. I'm not one to judge, but I would have cut down on the high
frequency sound. The effect is well established early on and the subsequent
minutes are gratuitous. I merely skip the track when I listen to the album.
It is a amazing album otherwise.

You mean the tune no2.( i do not have this CD at home now), consisting of
sounds of broken glass?
I think that on this record the historical elements play a very important
role. So when you say that 'it'sd boring' 'pointless' etc. that is just the
reaction you are supposed to have - you just say that this sound of broken
glass is just a noisy unconvenience (JZ wrotes in the notes that prolongated
listening to the tune may be dangerous to your hearing.) The 'normal' guys
Germany thought just 'when will this unconvenience stop?' this night. Only
they could not switch the track on the CD - these sounds were not
recorded... It can make one think.
BTW if it is noty the tune you're talking about, sorry...

Septet seems promising...I'm not informed: what is his current quartet? He
was supposed to do some European shows in trio (wollesen/somebody) this
summer. It will not be recorded?
BTW, i've seen wollesen with David Tronzo trio? It was quite ok (althjough i
came late and could not apreciate it.) Who is that guy? his show sounded
very frisell-like.

BTW, there's also some work in trio with Lovano and Motian (labelled as
Motian), Does anybody know what is it like?

What is that like?
Those who could have the opportunity to see the current crimson lineup live
should absolutly do it. I've seen two shows, and they are incredible. MUCH
better then 'double trio'. Trey Gunn is incredible, and the improvs are
really great. Fripp does things one would doubt to be possible.

Kristallnacht is also a very good introduction to Klezmer and dealing with
the Holocaust.
Never Again is also a great piece to play when it's time to close your
record shop or get rid of those pesky guests at the end of a party.

Ron Miles! What's up with Ron Miles? That first Gramavision
record (My Cruel Heart) was da bomb! (Don't know if anyone was
paying attention to the time signatures in there, but that's
some hairy stuff.) The second Gramavision record (Woman's Day)
packed a lot less of a punch. I remain totally unmoved by
Miles's more straightahead stuff, though that quartet album
with Frisell was kind of interesting. Any more records along
the lines of My Cruel Heart? A lot of energy, some excellent
contrast in there. Electricity. Or did he just up and move
on?
Perhaps someone can recommend similar recordings with the
same degree of "fusion" as that record?

I didn't mean to imply that i thought it was pointless. I think
'aimless' is the word I used. I don't wish to come across saying that I
think I know how Zorn could have written his own composition better, but
what's to say he couldn't have accomplished the imagery he was trying to
attain in, just to toss out a random number, four minutes instead of almost
twelve?

It's can be an exhilirating passage. It does get it's point across, and
with a severity fairly equal to the horror of the event it is trying to
portray. The entire album may not be my favorite Zorn one musically, but
that wasn't meant to be a comment on the album's subject. I apologize for
any confusion about that. I had extended family members killed in the
pogroms. Believe me, the message -within- the music means a great deal to
me. I didn't mean to equate the two.
> It can make one think.
And it most definately does. But my comments about the actual music
itself stand.

I gotta say, sometimes it makes sense, but sometimes places show lower cost
while jacking up the shipping. Computer hardware sources are notorious for
this, but even places like Spun.com (which has a sweet selection of used
titles) charges a minimum of 5 bucks shipping and handling, for a single
disc!!
You know, 3.20 priority shipping and 2 bucks handling.
It's a peeve of mine.

I prefer the later albums from Sly, Fresh and There's a Riot Goin' On.
For good solid funk, I enjoy a lot of Blaxploitation soundtracks: Superfly,
Black Caesar, Trouble Man, Truck Turner
Meters is excellent New Orleans funk.
For deep synth funk, I'd recommend Parliament's Greatest Hits as an easy
place to start, with Motor Booty Affair being my fave regular album.

Ribot is not involved in Swordfish Trombones, but in Big Time and in Frank┤s
Wild Years near Mule Variations.
His best recording as a leader is Shoe String Symphonette in my opinion. The
Solos on the first Bar Kokhba are incredible. The Sun Died is really great
and was one of the best concerts I┤ve ever seen!
It┤s a pity that Joey Baron has no plans to make a recording with Ribot and
Medeski.
Here are some other recommendations out of my roughly 100 piece Ribot
collection not mentioned so far in order of recording:
Third Person - The Bends (1990): Ribot is doing four nice pieces with Cora
and Bennett near other third persons.
Optical*8 (1992): Hoppy Kamiyama┤s group. Their first CD. It┤s kind of a
forerunner to Shrek.
David Shea - Prisoner (1993): Samples and Electronics worth checking out.
Kazutoki Umezu - First Deserter (1995): Jazz Rock at it┤s best with a super
linup: Umezu, Ribot, Horvitz, Cora, Bennett.
Surrender To The Air (1996): Unusual music and combination of musicians:
Trey Anastasio, Marshall Allen, Michael Ray, Medeski near Ribot and others.
Sun Ra meets Downtown - not perfect but expandible.
Noel Akchote - Lust Corner (1996): Guitar Duos with Ribot and Chadbourne.
Cyro Baptista - Vira Loucos (1996): Really nice brazillian stuff with Zorn
as a guest on two tracks.
Tricky - Angels With Dirty Faces (1998): Trip Hop
