There's a store called Bart's CD cellar in Boulder, Colorado that does this
with CDs. They also have a ton of vinal.
Just thought I'd interject in case anyone is ever in Boulder.

I'm in Cleveland, and at the CD Warehouse chain (I don't know how much
territory they cover) you can listen to any/all used CD's they have in stock
at your leisure. They usually have around 3 or 4 players available per store.

Hear Music in Berkeley also lets you listen to CDs prior to purchase.
unfortunately their prices are a little high compared to
Amoeba/Rasputin's and they don't have as large a collection of
avant-garde/experimental/tzadik/etc type stuff. Both those stores stock
a nice collection of the aformentioned genres..
also back when i lived in LA (5+ years ago) there was a Blockbuster
Music near my house that would let you preview any CD. I know the
particular store that was near my old house shut down, not sure if the
chain still exists (i bet it does) or if the listen before you buy
policy does (probably not).

Hmm. Now I know we're all backwards in Colorado, and not nearly as
trendy as everyone on the coasts, but all of my favorite shops have
always done this. Twist & Shout, Wax Trax, and many of the chains will
do this. Jerry's Record exchange on Capitol Hill even lets their
customers fondle the liner notes, and they'll put discs on the store
stereo for customers, if they're not to busy. (This is fun, considering
that Jerry's is the premier source for "art music" in the area.

I hope no one will object to this modest promotional interruption, but I
just wanted to pass on some words regarding some upcoming shows that may
be of interest to some denizens of this list. My group, the Blue Noise
Band, is going to be venturing into the midwest and northeast this July,
with shows in Chicago, Cleveland, DC, Baltimore, NYC, and Boston. Based
in Austin TX, we are, for lack of a better description, a groove-heavy,
frequently abstract, aspirationally downtown-y jazz thing which I suspect
may interest some zorn-listers. I would point potentially interested
parties towards the soon to be revamped www.bluenoiseband.com for the
exact dates as well as audio and plenty of total nonsense. Please feel
free to shout at me for more information (or for no reason at all).

I'll shout not at Tom but for him: if the band plays near you, you should
make the effort to go see them, especially if you find a grooving
intersection of Masada and Sex Mob potentially appealing. Dabs of Naked
City, too. I hear those influences and more in Tom's group's CD
"Multi-Purpose," a fine, fine thing about which I've been meaning to write
for the Z-list for ages... and may still, when life allows a little bit of
breathing room.

Speaking of listening in stores, I got my indoctrination in
avant-whatever music in this way. I would hang out for hours at
Lunch For Yor Ears, where Manny would play anything anyone wanted
to hear. I got quite an education from not only what stuck my
curiosity and what he'd suggest, but from being there when people
liek Elliott Sharp and Fred Frith came in and finding out what they
were listening to.

I'll have to chip in the Manifest chain of stores in South/North Carolina.
Their listening stations in Columbia feature a hundred or so new CDs you can
hear in their entirety, and other listening stations that give you 30-second
bits of each song among hundreds of other CDs. You can also listen to any
used CD as long as you want- that is, unless there is a line of people
waiting to sample stuff. Unfortunately, due to people being a bit "rough"
with their players, the store is down to one useable CD player...which is why
I usually keep a portable player in the car to bring into the store as needed.

Would this be cool with most of you? What would be the un-merits of such a
scheme? Why wouldn't the labels agree?

I'd think that the retailers would do this in a skinny second for their
artists that are not big sellers, but I wouldn't expect a discounted scheme
like this for a proven commodity, like The Dixie Chicks, for example. I
doubt that the music-buying public would buy into this at all, especially
since a large majority of online users still access their ISP via telephone
lines and 28.8k modems.
I sure wouldn't *pay* for a MP3/Liquid Audio file, either.

To add to the list: Twisted Village in Cambridge, MA will let you listen to

CDNOW has the list of the songs from MASADA's upcoming live album LIVE IN
SEVILLA 2000. They also have the albumcover on it. The songlist goes like
this:
LIVE IN SEVILLA 2000 (2000)
1/ Ne'eman
2/ Katzatz
3/ Hadasha
4/ Beeroth
5/ Yoreh
6/ Hazor
7/ Nashon
8/ Lakom
9/ Bith Aneth
I suppose track 8 "Lakom" is actually "Lakum" from HEI (5).
:-( I was waiting for a good quality sound of MIDBAR live!!

Perhaps see some of you out there. I am, as always, the guy with the big

For me, living in belgium, this is rather a strange discussion/conversation
because here in belgium almost all (!!) of the cd-shops give the possibility
to listen to any cd and as long as you want (when it's too busy e.g. limited
to 5 cd's and 15
minutes per person). Ari.
BTW: a few days ago i was on a free concert with David Shea performing his
Satyricon for only 25 (!!!) people - wow...

Cutlers in New Haven Ct. has CD listening stations throughout
their stores.
Also I've had good luck getting the staff to play stuff for me at
Brass City records(Waterbury Ct), and Secret Sounds(formerly in Black
Rock, now in new Haven, though I have yet to check out their new digs)

well, for those of you out there jonesing for more classic tape music/musique
concrete, I've got a recommendation.
Dick Raaijmakers, a Dutch composer, has a 3 CD box out of his complete tape
music, from 1958-1998. it's very poorly distributed here in the US, but
Anomalous has some copies now for $53. expensive, yes, but the first CD (all
I've heard so far) is incredible. very fresh-sounding, a lot of work with
crackles and static, and a general "rough" feel. I don't hear a lot of
releases that excite me these days, but this one is.

This release won an Edison (the Dutch equivalent of the Grammy) last
year, which is unique for this kind of music. Therefore I can only
support Jon's recommendation. Another, kind of similar release that
deserves a good listening is the 3cd box 'Ohm: Early Gurus Of
Electronic Music' on Elipsis Arts. Besides the widely known works of
Cage, Subotnick and Stockhausen it also contains a lot of tracks by
less famous composers. The extensive liner notes and beautiful
packacking make the box even more interesting.

I ordered a couple of records to a major Internet record store company
and I was surprised of how high the postage was ($5.37). Then I realized that
the records would be shipped separately because:
"You will receive your order in 2 separate shipments because these
items are shipped from different locations."
It appears that the high cost comes from the two separate shipping.
It is regular practice to put the shipment burden on the customer for a
such a casual order?

I'm not that sophisticated about Internet ordering as some of the others
here, but I know this has never happened to me when dealing with Verge in
Uxbridge, Ont. Either they have the CDs on hand or (with a back order
*discount*) ship them to you later. All shipments
come from a one place, so you're not paying extra for multiple shipments.
I always figured this was common practice. Is that so, or is Patrice's
experience more typical?
