  56. What a brilliant idea!  I once goofed around with a
  57. similar program when it hadn't been "adjusted" to my
  58. voice yet and the surreal phrases it spit out as I
  59. spoke endlessly amused me.  I really just thought that
  60. was the funniest thing I'd ever seen.  I took it into
  61. chat room and I think people thought I was having a
  62. stroke or something.  For whatever reason, never
  63. thought to play an instrument into it, as obvious as
  64. that seems now.  Very interesting.  Ducks do do do
  65. dada do english muffin we we long long.

  107. Yes, I liked this too, but wasn't wild about all the sequencing choices, 
  108. especially the really noisy Sonny and Linda Sharrock thing coming after the 
  109. relatively quiet Daevid Allen/Robert Wyatt song, kind of a mood-killer 
  110. there.  There are a copule of other moments like that, not sure if it was 
  111. done on purpose (I'm guessing) or just a result of them doing the best they 
  112. could (which I doubt). But overall it's well worth it, especially for the 
  113. relatively low price.

  115. Also, what is the Cecil Taylor "Indent Vol. 2" mentioned on that list. I 
  116. have the Indent solo piano CD and haven't heard of a vol. 2...

  159. I'm dredging this up from ancient memories, so I may be off, but
  160. originally (around 1974) there were two issues on Cecil's Unit Core
  161. label, 'Indent' and 'Spring of Two Blue J's'. My recollection is that
  162. the inner sleeve on 'Indent' (my copy of which was spirited off by a
  163. supposed friend) indicated a third release was in the works. I _think_
  164. it was a large ensemble work, possibly a student orchestra, but I'm
  165. wondering if it may have been titled, 'Indent, Vol. 2'. Just a guess.

  180. I would second this.  As much legal difficulties as MP3s have caused I still
  181. find sound bites really usefull. Being in Colorado I use the internet a good
  182. deal for CD shopping and music info.  I think that for a - comparatively -
  183. small label like Tzadik sound bites can help tremendously.

  263. sounds.  to, do etc.  But I wonder how it turned saxophone playing into
  264. words like "england."  I wonder if it is more attentive to pitch, duration,
  265. timber, or what.

  279.   I just joined this list. I=B4m from Madrid (Spain). I=B4ve been into =
  280. music all my life only recently discovering the great J.Zorn. I'm into =
  281. playing myself, but not even close to that level :) =

  283.   I recently saw a concert in Madrid that Zorn was supposed to have played,=
  284.  only he didn't come because of the death of his mother, the other =
  285. musicians were great and played some Zorn's compositions for piano, =
  286. violonchelo and violin. I loved the concert.

  288.   Anybody know if he has plans for another tour in Europe that would bring =
  289. him to Spain? Also, I really like Naked City's first album (The only one =
  290. that I've heard yet). Does J.Zorn still play similar stuff? I'd really =
  291. love to see him live playing that kind of stuff...

  348. Perhaps "Indent Vol. 2" refers to the parts of "Indent" that
  349. originally appeared together with "Lono" on the Japanese Trio label.
  350. This record was reissued on CD by Konnex together with the last part
  351. of "Akisakila" -- on the CD it says Vol. 2 if memory serves (Vol. 1
  352. being the first part of "Akisakila"). According to Richard Shapiro's
  353. pretty exhaustive Cecil Taylor sessionography
  354. <www.shef.ac.uk/misc/rec/ps/efi/mtaylors.html>, these are the only
  355. recordings bearing the title "Indent". (Note Shapiro has the Unit Core
  356. release of "Indent" with the album title "Mysteries".)

  374. that), it allows you to donwload full track with CD quality for 50 cents or
  375. so. You can then burn it to a CDR yourself, it will be legal. So, you will
  376. get full-quality "sample" of the album, if you will like it, you can even
  377. download the whole CD. But if you use dial-up connection to internet, the
  378. charge for this download will cover the price of few normal albums...
  379.  
  380. Liquid Audio is supposed to be a kind of response to MP3. Because of low
  381. transmission rates, it's not an alternative for most people.

  422. I noticed that the Dave Douglas Quartet was on the bill.  I'm not familiar
  423. with many of the performers, with the exception of Ray Charles, Joshua
  424. Redman, and Paquito D'Rivera .  Are there any other good acts playing?

  436. Picked up a new album of Glass works the other day -- am really enjoying it.
  437.  
  438. Contents:
  439. Symphony #3 (for strings)  --  a great piece, which I heard live in New York
  440. several years ago.  The third movement is gorgeous.  It seems that Glass has
  441. gone from developing triads to working with chromatic scales. Interesting
  442. dissonances.
  443.  
  444. Interludes #1 and 2 from "The Civil WarS" -- very nice.
  445.  
  446. Mechanical Ballet from the Voyage
  447.  
  448. and a truly magnificent work "The Light", a 20+ minute fantasy in F-major.
  449. Very inspired.

  452. All played very well by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and the Vienna Radio
  453. Symphony, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies.

  483. mp3.com. Some of it is great, some of it not. But it is new music that comes
  484. for free, and I can listen to it as much as I want.  In the stores, all that
  485. comes free is the listening stations, and they seldom have any good music
  486. on, mostly just stuff that they're paid to promote.

  488. So this got me thinking -- what if the labels/retailers agreed to this:

  490. You may sample all tracks on an album via an online portal for $5.99 ... if
  491. you decide that you like 'em, you can order the CD (or download Liquid
  492. Audio) for a discounted price of roughly another $5.99.

  494. Would this be cool with most of you? What would be the un-merits of such a
  495. scheme?  Why wouldn't the labels agree?

  531. I say move back to the future, and make sampling the entire album a no-cost 
  532. activity, such as what existed up until 40 or 50 years ago in record stores 
  533. via listening booths. Then, charge whatever you want to charge to download 
  534. it, but certainly make it less expensive than buying a CD, since in that case 
  535. you are also paying for materials, manufaturing, distribution and some 
  536. version of retail storage space. But if someone wants to charge me to sample, 
  537. I'll be sampling far fewer items, and thus buying far fewer items.

  556. Virginia (mainly Charlottesville) has CD stations where they will slyly open
  557. a CD (without breaking any of the hologram or label stickers), and let you
  558. listen to it.  I used to spend hours at these stations.  Their selection is
  559. decent, nothing too obscure though.
