That's pretty discouraging sounding. I'm looking for a fertile playing/perf=
orming scene for experimental / creative / improv based stuff. I'd say =
Chi-Town is probably the call for the midwest. I'm close to San Francisco =
(Santa Cruz) right now and there's quite a lot of people playing this kind =
of stuff and at least a few regular places that it happens... Santa Cruz =
has far less places to play... but I'm working on that.
Thanks for the comment Samuel? Anyone else know of underground / academia =

for abberant players to converge.

doesn't compare, but it's as good as much of their stuff. there are some really

Yes! The Northampton area has been more than kind to all
forms of alternative music. I have always credited this to the large
number of yippies, hippies and 60's radicals who settled there over
the years.(but maybe I'm overly-nostalgic). Also, check out the
colleges; Miford Graves, I believe, has a chair at Bennington, and
David Moss is a vermont native, and has taught there. You never know
what you'll discover. I live in Ct. and my favorite "local" bands
include Forever Einstein, and Anthony Braxton!

Depending on how you interpret the message of Hesse it is either a good
book or an sad one (again IMHO):
good book: the message is that by spending too much time at
looking above your head you end up loosing contact
with people around round you and die in total
solitude (religious people here might differ...)
In short: Siddhartha might reach God but he totally
failed connecting to people around him (his son, for
example, as well as the prostitute)
sad one: you are impressed by Siddhartha and his search for
"elevation" and he might be a role model for you
Surprisingly, many people are in awe with the mystic message. From a
litterary point of view, the didactic aspect of the book is a little
bit annoying.

Jason, you have been here long enough to know better :-).
Usually, when the KF web site is revamped, we know that the KF was able to get
a new person to take care of their web. A few months later, you start to
realize that the enthousiasm is down (symptom? the updates are less and less
frequent, until you learn more about the KF new releases by reading the adds
in magazines). Then there is is black out period where nothing happens
anymore. At this time you know that the person in charge of the web has
left toward greener horizons... Period of this cycle? About 6 months.

Yep... Sorry its tough there... I think it's pretty similar in MOST place =
though... it's easy to feel pretty deprived if you want to actually PLAY =
music like that. 5 people in every 1000 might be a realistic ratio of =
acceptance. In Santa Cruz, we are fortunate to have a couple clubs which =

15-20 folks or worse... (as he did up in Oakland where I saw him).=20
It seems that the University of CA, Santa Cruz has a pretty cool scene =

Mr. Bungle who are pretty happening. They're on tour now with Trey =

The band you are thinking of was Stonetiger. They existed
from late 82 till Mid 84.
Mike Clarke from Brand X was the first drummer, followed by Dougie
Bowne. near the end they added Anton Sanko on keyboards. They
recorded a demo in 1983 but nothing came of it.
They were a great live band, and I think, Frisell's first attempts at
really cranking it up. Its funny how he has come full circle now,
with his current projects sounding (stylistically at least) a lot
like when he first started in the late 70's.

Can you spot the oxymoron in the following paragraph?
Knitting Factory Delays Continue: The construction delays that prevented
Knitting Factory Hollywood from opening on its originally scheduled date in
early June have still not been resolved, according to the club's CEO,
Michael Dorf. "The contractor doesn't want to promise to complete the job
until the end of July," Dorf says, "although obviously I'm hoping it will be
earlier. But, as embarrassing as these delays have been, I'm not going to
open until the club is everything we promised it would be." The current
projected date for that to take place is the first week in August.

As promised a few weeks ago, here's a snippet from my recent interview
with Joey where he talks about his current projects aside from Down
Home.
The complete interview will be downloadable in the upcoming "issue" (I
don't know what do you call it?) of DooBop, and a profile based around
the interview will be in the Summer 2000 issue of The Jazz Report.
James Hale
Hale: At the same time, you also started another band with Marc Ribot
and John Medeski that generated a lot of attention. What are your plans
for that trio?
Baron: That was a special project for me. It's more of a live thing.
It's been difficult to get everyone together, so that project sort of
just happens when it happens. It's really fun when it does. I've written
a few pieces especially for that instrumentation and it=92s pretty
powerful. Marc and John are both very busy, so it's more like a project
for special situations. I haven't gone into the studio with them because
I've already recorded a lot of that material. If something develops out
of the period of writing I'm going into I'll probably go into the studio
with them, but I didn't see the need to re-record things.
From being in the studio and working live with Down Home I really
started to hear how the Ribot-Medeski band could sound. I wanted to
explore a rougher kind of texture. It's a little thicker, a little more
in your face, noisy (laughs).
Hale: And you have another band happening too?
Baron: Out of both of those things I developed a new band I'm calling
Killer Joey. It's a local group, and we've been playing very frequently
at Tonic in New York. We recorded a self-produced CD that we sell at
gigs and we did a little West Coast tour and had a great time. We'll be
doing more things as time goes on.

The best things going in Northampton aren't actually in Northampton -- one
guy seems to own all the clubs here, and the bookings lean heavily towards
folky singer/songwriter stuff and deadhead fodder.
Michael Ehlers, the guy who runs the Eremite label, does a very good improv
series at the Unitarian Meetinghouse in Amherst, which is about 10-15
minutes away. To give you an idea, Alan Silva/Sabir Mateen/Wilbur Morris
are playing tomorrow night, and last weekend was Joe Maneri/Barre Phillips.
The other interesting place is Flywheel in Easthampton. They have a new
music series that seems to be mostly people from the Boston improv scene,
although I did see John Butcher/Gerry Hemingway there. And I think Kevin
Drumm played there recently.
The colleges (there are 5 of them...) also do interesting stuff on occasion.
I have yet to run into Sonic Youth at Stop & Shop.
