Subject: l.-f. cΘline (no zorn content - sorry!)
hello again.
some time ago a few of us had sometimes talked a bit about literature
that has moved us, books we'd recommend.=20
while talking on another subject, somebody suggested=20
l.-f. c=E9line's work -
unfortunately i haven't saved that mail, so i can't remember who brought
c=E9line up. (i do remember, though, that said person did not mention any
particular work by c=E9line.)
what i'd like to know now: what english translations of c=E9line's work
would you recommend as a starting point?
sorry for the non zorn content!

Subject: the young gods live - review
i had the pleasure of seeing "the young gods" live last friday.
their new cd will be out some time in autumn.
what can i say? i've been a fan of them for years, still enjoy listening
to their stuff, but wasn't too sure how the concert was going to be.
also, they hadn't played live for over three years. (last time i saw
them live was in 1992.)
i was simply blown away! (which surprised me; but maybe a little bit of
nostalgia had an influence here...) the idea of "just"
drums/vocals/samplers has always appealed to me. especially with the
young gods, because the guy on the sampling machines comes up with lots
and lots of great stuff.
for their new material they've updated their sound library quite a bit.
there are more techno/house/dub/dance sounds used.
trying to be as objective as possible, i must admit that the new
material was nothing groundbreaking. it's still built on the formula
we've known from them for years. but the way the songs are
written/programmed is very good, very professional.
also the new drummer was very, very good. (better than the previous one,
imho.) solid playing throughout the gig. not a single mistake; and
playing along to sequenced stuff is rather demanding.
where's the zorn content here? well, franz treichel - the singer - is on
one of the tzadik "tribute" cds. and roli mosiman, who used to be their
producer, has also down some work in the downtown scene, if my memory
serves right.
if you like their old stuff, i'd definitely recommend to go and check
them out live!

Subject: webern box set
we've already talked about this box set about a week or two ago.
i finally received it last saturday.
i wont and can't go into details about performances, etc., but i'll let
you know why this new "complete works" consists of 6 cds while the
previous "complete ..." was only 3 cds.
there are a few pieces that have no opus numbers; so i guess webern
didn't want them to be published. i'm glad i have those pieces, and that
i can listen to them, but still i have mixed feelings about this. if he
didn't want them to be published - why did they do so anyway?
the 1st "complete ..." was in the exact order of the opus numbers. (from
1 to 31 - or was it 32?) here, they've put things together that one
could say "belong" together. e.g. one cd is just string trios and string
quartets. which makes some of the cds rather short. cd 3 e.g. is 35
minutes long...
thought maybe some of you might be interested...
yours,
patRice

Depends on what you mean by choice: If you're going for in-print then I think only the Manheim translations are available, but if you're browsing libraries or out-of-print services then "Journey to the End of Night" and I think "Death on the Installment Plan" have earlier translations.

i don't think you have to feel mixed about this. webern composed those
pieces and i think that if he really didn't want them to be published, he
would have destroyed the scores by himself. maybe, some of the genius of the
20th century are just too modest. remember that also franz kafka didn't want
his manuscripts to be published and asked his friend max brod to burn all of
them after his death. but can't we all be glad brod published the
manuscripts anyway?
