This morning I listened to Pantera's 'A Vulgar Display of Power',
because I could easily find the tape since I also listened to it last
week.. Furthermore I tend to enjoy Zappa's 'We're only in it for the
money' and 'The Helsinki Concert' a lot, and often listen to Ligeti's
choral and vocal works and several Mego-releases.

i don't really know. i do remember that zorn spoke very highly of
morricone's music in the liner notes to "the big gundown". he said
something like he first felt he couldn't do the project, because the
compositions seemed way too perfect.
maybe you can find some useful hint there?

status quo. can't remember the titles, but i've got about four of their
albums.
(must admit - though i haven't listen to it for well over 15 years -
that i really loved their very first album.)

this very week it is the following:
mingus: mingus at antibes.
the quintet: jazz at massey hall.
helge schneider: h=F6rspiele (this one probably only our german-speaking
list members will know)
miles davis: miles in the sky
these albums i find myself returning to on a regular basis:
naked city: torture garden
naked city: absinthe
masada: zayin
peggy lee: the best of
depeche mode: (most of their releases)
the cure: (all of their releases)
after saying that - also most of jz's cds i have (yes, quite a few of
them.)
frank zappa: sheik yerbouti
edgar var=E8se: the complete works (riccardo chailly)
anton webern: complete works (pierre boulez)
i'll stop right here; this list might turn out to be endless... ;-)

Hello again,
Joe Zawinul is coming to Venezuela and well, not many people come all the
way down here, so it's just one of my few chances of seen a real Jazz
performance. Now, I only know he played during the 70 (if I'm correct) with
Miles David ... that's all I know. Can someone please tell me if it's worth

I mean, I don't want to go to no Rippingtons concert, know what I mean?

Marcel - Shibboleth is for string trio (vln, vla, vc), clavichord, and
percussion - the strings with practice mutes on throughout, the percussion
largely played with fingers and knitting needles. Not recorded yet, to my
knowledge, but we will play it in New York City on June 9th. Sorry, no

The soundtrack of the same name, or a 2-CD "best of" called 'Film Music
1966-1987' released on Virgin Records. I've seen that compilation around
(in new shops) very cheap, so it's well worth it. It could be on a few
others but those are the two that come to mind...

i also have a boulez conducting var=E8se cd on sony. (the one starting of=
f
with "ionisation".) like it.=20
don't know the nagano one.
chailly, i feel, does a great job conducting the dutch "royal
concertgebouw orchestra" (on cd1), a great one imho. cd2 is performed by
the asko ensemble.
professor chou wen-chung, who'd studied very closely (for a number of
years???) with var=E8se, was deeply involved with this cd project.=20
there are also one or two compositions included that were finished by
wen-chung because var=E8se hadn't gotten round to finishing them during
his lifetime.=20
another important track imho is the very first recording of the
original version of am=E9riques.
po=E8me =E9lectronique is featured, too; transferred from the original
master.

haven't heard about this! but i've got one cd that came out no longer
than 3 years ago, i guess, that has boulez conducting some webern works.
(don't have it here now, so can't look up the "tracklist". passacaglia
op. 1 is included as far as i remember.)

Since I don't have much cash, I don't really look for new releases
anymore, I buy a lot of back catalogue material, so my current
playlist is comprised of older releases:
Peter Thomas - Raumpatroupille
Dream Theater - Awake
Tom Waits - The Black Rider
Queens of the Stone Age
As for records that I'm ashamed of, well...Ugly Kid Joe's "America's

the box set was one of my favorite releases last year. i'd say get that
instead of the sampler that just came out if only for the sheer immensity of
it. four discs, each one over an hour long, and it's some of the most
emotionally intense music i've ever heard. it says somewhere in the liner
notes that loren "downplays" the worth of the recordings--that must be quite
a task, i haven't found more worthy recordings in a long time...

I have the Halana CD, and there's definitely sound there. It's just very
quiet like most of Gunter's pieces. It's actually a really nice track, so
you should try to listen to it in a quiet environment if you can. Not to
for loud offices, certainly. I usually have to turn off my computer to
listen to Gunter, because the fan will drown it out. Actually, in the
interview in the magazine, he talks about how he was really worried after
the head of the label that issued his first record asked if they should put
a sticker on the CD telling people it was blank. So you're not the first to
think that.
Also, I believe "un lieu. . ." means "a line like an erased point" if I
remember my friend's French translation properly. Actually, funny that you
should mention the phrase "a bit of nothing" in French, since Luc Ferrari
has a series of pieces entitled (in French) "Almost Nothing [fill in the
blank]." Those wacky French speakers!
Yeah, Gunter is great. I recommend "Univers Temporel Espoir" to everybody.
Pretty damn sublime, if also pretty damn near inaudible at most points.
