Can anyone help me identify the source of this narrative: On the Medeski
Martin & Wood remix CD _Combustication_ (Blue Note), the second track is
entitled "Whatever Happened to Gus (Word to the Drum Remix)". And who the
heck is telling it?
- ----------------
GURU is the rapper and main man from GANG STARR, a rap group. He's in the
"jazz world" thanks to his album JAZZMATAZZ (which I purchased two days ago,
and it's excellent), featuring jazz men like Donald Byrd and Roy Ayers, and
Courtney Pine, etc. There's also JAZZMATAZZ vol. 2 but I haven't heard it.
I recommend JAZZMATAZZ volume 1 a lot ... it's just what it says on the
cover: "an experimental fusion of hip hop and jazz". I heard the GURU mix
of the MMW track but I can't remember how it was, I'm looking forward to
listening to the remix ep.
I don't know if it's based on a poem or anything. I just know the original
song in the COMBUSTICATION album, also has somebody (can't rememeber who)
talking, it's also very good.

Anybody know what Zorn's been up to lately? He hasn't really
released to many CD as of late. Is he composing new stuff? Is he just
spending all his time running Tzadik?

I don't think it matters which one you start with. I decided the easy
way, eenee meenee minee moe
I am also just a little bit curious how someone goes about deciding
which is best. I have owned all of them for quite a while and I must
say that I think individually they are all great discs. I have been
reading these posts and I have been trying to decide which I think is
best but I keep drawing a blank.

joe morris - i agree w/alan, he needs to be seen to truly comprehend. he's a
fascinating guitarist, playing a solid body with no effects and no chords. it's
cliche to say he approaches guitar like a horn, but it's somewhat accurate. the
best example of his playing, i think, is invisible weave, the duet with william
parker on no more records (available through downtown music gallery or i can
connect anyone directly to the label if they email me private like).
painted desert - caleb doesn't care for this. i really like it, although his
description of it, that it doesn't seem to go anywhere, is accurate. but the
desert doesn't really go anywhere either, and i think that's the point. it kinda
reminds me of the live performance i saw of zorn's 'pueblo', also with ribot and
quine. i haven't heard the filmworks disc with this on it, but when i saw it it
went for about 40 minutes and didn't change in any substantial way. interesting
that they're somewhat similar (at least if memory serves). i think painted
desert came first. anyone know if there's a connection?
radio - these are original compositions, but the notes inside list bands or
composers that serve as source material for each track. many of them are also
things that ncity was covering live at the time.
tzadik april haohio, dousidz, leo, susie - wow! great batch of titles! i have a
japanese hoahio release that's really interesting, but yagi isn't on it (or if
she is, she's not playing koto).
anyone know who's in dousidz or the golden quartet? these both look really
interesting.
and i had no idea susie was doing something for tzadik. this should be great!
btw, let me recommend the satlah disc that will officially be released on
thursday. young trio, definitely masada-inspired, but don't think they don't
have their own voice. really nice playing, zorn guests on a few tracks. they
just played the brecht forum this weekend and the official cd release party is
at tonic on my birthday, so you can buy me a drink.

Ikue Mori has mixed feeling about it. It seems like she lost the control of
the music on it and the project ended up being Robert and Marc's one. She
talked about that in an interview published in the French magazine REVUE &
CORRIGEE (many years ago).

Just before the topic starts to be to annoying to be true...
As for the studio, I opt for the third - gimmel. Hekhal and sheloshim are my
favourite masada tracks. The live albums are different - less perfect from
technical/ recording point of view (the taipei one sounds like it was
recorded in the '70s), but a way more vivid. Sometimes the studio stuff
sounds too perfect for me (hey, I love this stuff anyway..).

Subject: soul on soul review
Knight-Ridder review moved over the newswire this morning. Figurd itd be of
interest.
DAVE DOUGLAS "Soul on Soul" (BMG/RCA, 3 1/2 stars)
Trumpeter Dave Douglas honors the great composer-pianist Mary Lou Williams on
this multilayered CD, the title of which comes from Duke Ellington, who once
said, "She is like soul on soul."
Williams, a former prodigy from Pittsburgh who died in 1981 at age 71, wrote
music that remains surprisingly modern. Douglas, a denizen of the experimental
downtown scene in Manhattan, includes only four relatively brief Williams
originals, among them "Aries," a whirling piece written in 1946 that more than
holds up today, and "Play It Momma," a cool trio romp with bassist James Genus
and drummer Joey Baron.
Douglas' nine originals celebrate the Williams spirit, albeit with the
trumpeter's heady spin. "Blue Heaven" sounds like a funky Horace Silver ditty,
but Douglas makes it darker and more dense in patches. "Ageless" seems more
pedantic and intellectual, an occasional problem with Douglas' compositions.
Still, "Soul on Soul" exudes a sense of surprise overall. On the uptempo title
track, Uri Caine plays a splendid piano solo that spans the history of jazz in a
Williams vein. Trombonist Joshua Roseman and saxophonists Greg Tardy and Chris
Speed provide some solo heft for this CD, which, though a bit affected at times,
is consistently compelling.

Soul on Soul is Bad on Bad
Reviewer: Douglas from Scottsdale, Arizona March 22, 2000
This is the first time the Amazon music reviews let me down! I read the two
reviews and took a chance, I should not have. User friendly, instinctive
improvisations, unexpected detours, music that meshes together, these
attributes are not on this Jazz CD for me. Music should relax you, motivate
you, inspire you, or just make you feel good. I can not envision a time when
playing this music would be appropriate. It fails as background music while
entertaining, as music to relax to late at night or Sunday morning while the
coffee is brewing, and while driving in the car. It could insite "road
rage"! Musical improvisations that replicate the sound of gunfire (by the
drums) and fingernails on chalkboard (the horns) are not easy to listen to.
It is obnoxious, misguided noise. If you are looking for pleasing Jazz, easy
to listen to Jazz, this disc is not for you. If your Doctor has advised you
not to sleep or relax for an hour or if you need a pathway to irratibility,
this disc is for you.
