I'm more than a bit late in replying, but anyway :-)
There's another Davis/Atlantic Monthly article (1991) on Zorn at
http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/jazz/dzorn.htm
Using the "Search" function at the site you can find a couple of
interesting Davis "Monthly" contributions (Ornette Coleman, W. Marsalis,
Eastwood's "Bird", etc.)

Subject: Joe Morris
As a long time Joe Morris fan, and one lucky enough to have produced two
shows for him, I must say that the best way to hear him is live. His
recordings tell only a part of the story, one which I think is best told by
his quartet with Mat Maneri, especially with the addition of Gerald Cleaver
on drums. His earliest recordings, still only available on LP, reveal his
style almost fully developed. Way back when I used to think he was a bit of
Blood Ulmer, a shake of Derek Bailey, and throw in some Ornette for good
measure. Now I just hear Joe, a unique sound indeed.
All of his recordings are rewarding, perhaps topped by Underthru and A Cloud
of Blackbirds. Also not to be missed are his duo recordings with William
Parker and Matthew Shipp. Oh, and Elsewhere with Shipp, Parker, and Whit
Dickey. His new one on Knitting Factory is now available, as is the DKV
with JM on Okkadisk. I am anxiously awaiting the new duo recording with Mat
Maneri.

I've been slowly absorbing this over the last few days, and there's some
pretty exciting material here. it's obvious that Thurston and Byron spent a
lot of time compiling it, and are superfamiliar with the catalog. and the
booklet, written by them, is also very informative. highly recommended if you
think you might be interested. this is one of the two behemoth boxes I've
been working my way through this week, along with the Tilbury Feldman set
(too early for an opinion on this one yet, sorry).

This has probably been brought up before and if so the thread can end right
away. But I was curious to know which of Tzadik's New Japan Series are
considered to be the best. I'd also be curious as to which of the Avant
Japanese listings are good. I've picked up some of these but would like to
pursue the line further. thanks in advance.

I've only got a couple, but here are thumbnails of the ones I've got.
Ground Zero, Null and Void. GZ is probably a known quantity, but if not,
they are a very high energy, fast, complex, based-in-rock band led by
guitarist and turntablist Otomo Yoshihide. All of their albums are
excellent, but this one is a great starting point. I would consider this
essential.
Kato/Mori/Frith, Death Ambient. Also excellent, sort of the dark underside
of the power trio, although you'd never know it was just guitar/bass/drum
machines. Very atmospheric.
I also have the Ikue Mori solo album on Avant, Painted Desert, with Robert
Quine and Marc Ribot accompanying her on guitars. I was a bit disappointed
with this one, it never seemed to go anywhere for me. There's little or no
improv, so the guitarists don't generate much heat, and the lack of a
bottom end made it seem incomplete.

Subject: April/May Tzadik releases
I'm looking forward to hearing the HOAHIO...
=A0=20
- -----------------------------
Tzadik April 2000 Releases =20
COMPOSERS SERIES Lois V. Vierk: River Beneath the River =20
Vierk=92s music explores texture and microtonality in highly structured piec=
es=20
that build to swirling high energy intensity. Influenced by minimalism,=20
Japanese Gagaku and Appalachian folk music, Lois Vierk is one of America=92s=
=20
great originals. Her first CD for Tzadik is an exciting collection of=20
compositions for string quartet, brass sextet and a dynamic piece for=20
electric guitar, percussion, cello and synthesizer. Definitive performances=20
of some of Vierk=92s greatest works. =20
NEW JAPAN Dousidz: Empties =20
Powerful and hypnotic, dousidz has created a unique mix combining club music=
=20
with heavy rock riffs, dub studio techniques, noise and sexy vocals. Based i=
n=20
New York City these three young musicians take the classic format of guitar,=
=20
bass and drums to a whole new level with the aid of sampling triggers and=20
outboard effects. Influenced by a wide variety of music, Empties, their debu=
t=20
recording is a multifaceted peek into a trippy new world of sound. =20
KEY SERIES Wadada Leo Smith: Golden Quartet =20
A longtime dream project of Wadada Leo Smith, one of creative music=92s most=
=20
original voices, Tzadik is proud to present the first recording by a modern=20
jazz supergroup. The four instrumental giants that comprise the Golden=20
Quartet are veterans of some of the most influential bands in jazz history=20
and here they are at the height of their powers. Five new compositions bring=
=20
together lyricism, groove and fireworks in this exciting recording destined=20
to become a classic of new jazz. =A0=20
Tzadik May 2000 Releases =20
COMPOSERS SERIES Susie Ibarra: Flower After Flower =20
Born in California, raised in Texas and now based in NYC, Susie Ibarra is on=
e=20
of the most sought after drummers in the downtown scene having worked with=20
Derek Bailey, David S. Ware, Ikue Mori, Dave Douglas and Matthew Shipp among=
=20
others. Of Filipino descent, her music blends Asian traditions, free jazz,=20
improvisation and minimalism into evocative and dynamic soundscapes. This=20
exciting recording features her in a variety of contexts, both solo and with=
=20
an all-star group of her most illustrious musical compatriots. The sounds of=
=20
Kulintang (Filipino gamelan), fiery free-jazz drumming, Leo Smith=92s delica=
te=20
trumpet and the =93deep listening=94 accordion of Pauline Oliveros all come=20
together to make this one of the most unusual recordings of the year.=20
Bill Brovold: Childish Delusions =20
The mastermind behind the powerful band Larval, and a veteran of the early=20
Rhys Chatam orchestras, Bill Brovold=92s complex compositions smash the bord=
ers=20
of rock and classical music. Highly structured and meticulously crafted,=20
these quirky sound sculptures jump from mood to mood=97from Zappa to Henry C=
ow,=20
the Zen Vikings to Glenn Branca, Brovold has created a powerful new=20
instrumental rock that tells a story. =20
NEW JAPAN Tetsu Inoue: Fragment of Dots =20
Kyushu native Tetsu Inoue=92s recent works connect the vivid environments-in=
- -sou
nd of classical ambient with the stark, conspicuous timbral explorations of=20
academic computer music. Tetsu=92s second release for Tzadik delves deeper i=
nto=20
the methods of sonic microscopy that marked his debut, constructing minute,=20
peerless sound-surfaces that break apart and reconstitute in the shifting,=20
*n*th-dimensional space of the ear. While related, Tetsu=92s intentions diff=
er=20
sharply from those of post-digital composers mining the bitscape for evidenc=
e=20
of technology=92s failure. In the ecstatic bustle of sound particles careeni=
ng=20
through acoustical space can be heard the distinct inflection of a new means=
=20
of expression struggling to life. =20
Hoahio: Ohayo! Hoahio! =20
A founding member of the legendary band After Dinner, Haco is one of the mos=
t=20
versatile vocalists in the Japanese indies scene. Her newest project, Hoahio=
,=20
finds her collaborating with two of the most exciting young musicians in=20
Tokyo: koto virtuoso Yagi Michiyo, whose debut solo recording Shizuku was=20
released in 1999 on Tzadik, and Sachiko M, whose work with Otomo Yoshihide=20
has earned her international acclaim. In the tradition of the great Japanese=
=20
girl groups Saboten, Shonen Knife, Fukuko and Papaya Paranoia, this new trio=
=20
recording is simultaneously charming, mysterious and delightful. =20

1) Which would be a good Masada album to start out with? Should they be

2) Is it true that Naked City's Radio is made almost entirely of cover

It doesn't particularly matter, but many people say that 1 and 2 are some
of the best. I agree to some extent, and add in a recommendation for 7.
From memory, 9 and 5 are some other good ones.

No, they are Zorn's compositions. However, I have heard various people
claim that they are covers (Trey Spruance wrote this to me once as a
joke... well I think it was a joke anyway!).

for what it's worth, i don't believe this is
the intent behind the use of these "controversial" images.
most are (credited) art works or documentary photos.
examples: naked city (weegee, maruo), absinthe (hans bellmer) etc.
to my way of thinking, i see it as similar (in its

tossing out kudos to things that have provoked and/or

Can anyone help me identify the source of this narrative: On the Medeski
Martin & Wood remix CD _Combustication_ (Blue Note), the second track is
entitled "Whatever Happened to Gus (Word to the Drum Remix)". The remix is
credited to Guru. On it, a rapper does his stuff, nicely enough,
interspersed with another voice talking about "the old days". Names like
Lester Young, Billy Eckstine, "Max" (Roach?) and other turn up, references
to Pittsburgh and Kansas City and so forth, but he also mentions seeing
"Bird with his arm around Wynton Marselis"....?? Is this a poem? A
recounted dream? And who the heck is telling it?
Any assistance would be appreciated. (Great track on a great remix disc,
btw.) All the best, Stephen

very difficult question. i started off with alef (one), but by now have
them all! and i like all of them.
i listened to zayin (seven?) this weekend, and it is fantastic! the
track "bacharach" is just pure bliss imho.
and the new live in middleheim 1999 is excellent. it starts off with a
guy giving a few details about the festival, in flamish (sp?) (the
language spoken in one part of belgium), then announcing the band,
naming each player. i must admit that that sends shivers down my spine
every time i listen to it! and then masada just go off like a bomb!

no, not true.
but there's a "listing" for each track stating what bands/composers jz
was influenced by when writing.

it stands for "now playing".
hope this helps!
