Jaworzyn was in early incarnations of Skullflower, and is in Ascension and
Descension, both on Shock (Shock is (was?) run by Jaworzyn.) he also has a
superb duo CD on Incus with Alan Wilkinson, my favorite of the guitar/wind
instrument duo series on that label.
Morley is 1/3 of the Dead C., and has also recorded numerous records as Gate,
which is his solo project, including a new one on Table of the Elements,
which is due soon.

Morley I have no knowledge of (is he in the Dead C maybe ...or Gate ?) but
Stefan Jaworzyn is a British (pause for God Save the Queen) plank spanker,
currently in a free improv duo with drummer Tony Irving called Ascension.
He also was involved in a quartet called Descension with double bassist
Simon H. Fell and tenor player Charles Wharf, who upset a lot of people when
they supported Sonic Youth a couple of years ago. I did a gig supporting
them just before that and they upset me too. I'm not sure I understand what
Jaworzyn's trying to do really, though he has apparently stated that one of
his aims with Ascension is to make as much noise as possible in order to
piss off the audience. He's done a solo guitar record as well, but IMHO
it's all fairly lame stuff. Maybe I'm just too old, but gimme Sonny Sharrock
anyday.

Can't say I've seen it around in quite a while, but I'm not sure if it's
OOP or not. You might check Kaiser's website (don't have the URL handy,
but a search should find it--or if Michael Piper's still on this list,
he might help out).
While I find HK's work wildly inconsistent, I'd agree that this is one
of his best works, with a wonderfully wide variety of sounds.

DANTE QUERIED

Possibly my very favorite in this genre is an LP of John Handy with Ali
Akbar Khan (sarod), possibly Zakir Hussain on tabla. I operating from
memory here, but can provide more details later if Dante or others are
interested. don't recall the title -- label was something like MMP. I
have no idea if this has ever been released on Cd, but Handy sounds
like he was born and raised in india with a sax in his mouth. Ali Akbar
Khan is highly recommended in any context you can find him, the most
impressive improvisor to be mentioned in this email and easily one of
the most impressive I've heard live.
I continue to enjoy all three Shakti's -- L Shankar is a tremendous
violin player. Zakir Hussain is a fine tabla player.
Shankar has several albums on ECM, most of which are straight up India.
Stay away from "The Epidemics,'' his punkish band. I didn't hear much
happening there aside from posing. "Song for Everyone'' is the closest
to a blend of of India and jazz, with Jan Garbarek fitting in nicely
with L., Hussain, and Gurtu. Light and tasty, pretty melodies.
I haven't spent a lot of time with "Remember Shakti,'' McLaughlin's
latest, but I look forward to spending more with it. First impression:
gentle and pastoral, with extended forms. An Indian flute player takes
up Shankar's seat -- neither McLaughlin nor Hussain could track down
Shankar when they started putting this project together (which has made
me very curious as to his whereabouts).
One more ECM of note: Hussain's "Making Music,'' a combination of duos,
trios, quartets with McLaughlin, Garbarek, Indian flute. A little more
earthy than Shankar's "Song,'' higher highpoints perhaps.
Alice Coltrane's "Journey to Sachitinanda (sp?)" is also very pleasant,
although I don't recall anything particular about the soloing on it.
Jai Utal incorporates not only jazz and Indian music, but also rock and
Western folk elements in his Pagan Love Orchestra. I have several of
his albums and find "Beggars and Saints'' clearly the superior effort.
My favorite Trilok Gurtu is "Usfret.'' I don't recall the personnel.
Finally, Collin Walcott's ECM "Grazing Fields'' with John Abercrombie
et al is gorgeous, and prepared the ground for the CODONA albums
(Walcott, Don Cherry, Nana Vasconcelos), all three of which have
received regular play in my environs since they first came out in the
70s and 80s. Original world fusion. Delightful.

could be. originally mick told me he only did maybe two remixes with eraldo,
and eraldo agreed (or he thought that sounded right). eraldo though he had
done 4 or 5 by himself, but didn't sound very positive on that account,
either. it sounded like it was strictly a payment thing for them. invisible
certainly plays it like they both remixed every track, though.

There's an interesting recording with Steve Lacy and Subroto Roy
Chowdhury (sitar) plus a tabla player and a tanpura player
(_Explorations_, Jazz Point (Germany), JP 1020, 1987). It's sort of a
mix of classical Hindustani and free improv (probably more of the
latter).

PRESS RELEASE:
CD CAUSES SYNDROME: Hypnotic Effects Cause
Serious Concern
London, UK (February 17, 2000, 09:45 BMT)
Announced early this
morning, Dr. Kunst from the Royal British
Psychiatric Society has
clearly linked the recent activities of
listeners to the demo material
being called, "The Operazone" to what the
RBPS is calling the "Laswell
Syndrome."
The demo CD that was circulated out of the
studio to a few insiders in
the music industry has now been linked to
the mysterious activities of a
number of musical celebrities. According
to sources, last week, Elvis
Costello got a copy of the unreleased CD and
fell into the trance after
the 3rd song. He was found the next morning
in the studio by Steve
Nieve his collaborator, in the same position
for more than 10 hours. In
Los Angeles, at the same time, the demo CD
got into the hands of the
young star, BECK, who drove his car for more
than 18 hours straight
listening to the CD in his automobile. He
was stopped by LAPD for
ignoring a stop sign and shaken out of his
trance.
Dr. Kunst explains: "Similar to what
trained Doctors can achieve
through hypnotics, the beautiful songs with
the trance like rhythm
subtly behind opera tunes, causes the
listener to go into a deep "zone"
or trance of thought. This is extraordinary
for a musical manifestation
to be the catalyst of hypnotics."
Bill Laswell, the producer of the project,
states: " I had no idea it
would cause such an effect." The CD was
planned to be released by the
independent record label in New York called
Knitting Factory Records.
Michael Dorf, CEO & President was called
early this morning to ask if
the CD will come out as planned. "Given the
phenomenon of the
recording, I am torn what to do. This could
be our biggest recording;
yet, my entire company is just sitting at
their desks not doing
anything-I can't shake them from their
trance. I am afraid of what
might happen if it was released into public."
The RIAA is currently considering if this is
an attempt at false
marketing or will endanger the public if it
is true and is released.
Hillary Rosen, the President of the RIAA
said she would try and shut
down the Knitting Factory if any copies are
pressed commercially.
However, the parent company of the label,
has already started prerelease
promotion on a website www.operazone.com,
where copies of the CD are
being preordered.
