Buck's name is Brian Carroll. That's how he was credited on Henry Kaisers
album.

i love joe morris. he's got that ornette harmolodic-style tangled nature
to his lines. when i play his stuff at work there are sure to be many of
those 'what the hell is this crap?!' comments....
reminds me a little of bern nix (who i really wish recorded more)

Yes, in the liner notes, he explains that it is a boutique for young Japanese girls in the Harajuku section of Tokyo. It turns out that instead of "Spillane," he originally wanted to call it "Hips Road."

Subject: Forbidden Hoppy
The woman on the cover, at least from the neck up, is indeed Hoppy. I showed the
cover to Ribot last year after picking it up. He cracked up and said 'yeah,
that's what he looks like ... really.' I've never seen Hoppy shirtless, fwiw,
but I've seen him in a t-shirt, and if he has breasts I don't think they're that
big. (The cover of Welcome to Forbidden Paradise features a woman in a sort of
50s cheesecake scene with her robe fully open exposing both her breasts. My
guess is Hoppy's face is superimposed.)
Hoppy has a real think for cross-dressing. The cover of his more recent "Juice
and Tremelo -- Chamber Works" cd features him in a hilarious victorian get-up
and a huge wig. Apparently he usually performs in drag in Japan, but doesn't
like to here (in the US) because people get all hung up on asking him if he's
gay. Cross dressing is more about outlandish theater than sexuality in Japan,
apparently.
Nevertheless, I saw him in a great piano duo with Emi Eleonola of Demi Semi
Quaver called "Stravinsky's Dick" at the Knitting Factory, and he was in drag
for that show.
But enough about fashion. Since its come up, Hoppy's "New York" discs (like
Forbidden Paradise, Grooveallegiance and the first two Optical*8 discs) are not
his best, even if they contain an all-star cast of players frequently discussed
here. Of those, the Optical*8 ones are better (the first is self-titled, the
second has a very long title and a goldfish on the cover). His Japanese bands
are far better, I think. The second Optical*8 line-up featured Otomo and Reck
and did three records (including the double-live "All Over" which, back to the
nudity, has a full moon on the cover which I'd be dollars to donuts is Hoppy's
derriere). The Pugs and O?N?T?J (or, Olivia New-Ton John) are fun, slightly
noisy pop. The aforementioned Juice and Tremelo is probably my fave, ranging
from string arrangements to serious noise. It's on a French label, Sonora I
think. Bruce at DMG sometimes has it.
And, speaking of Emi (who also appears on the Ruins Symphonica on Tzadik) and
DSQ, does anyone know if they've disbanded? This looks to have been the first
year in 4 or so they didn't go to SXSW, and they're web site seems to have
disappeared. It looks like they did a hard push last year with their first US
release (a collection from the first two records, both on Hoppy's God Mountain
label). I think that was the wrong stuff to release. At the same time, they put
out their fourth record in Japan (H is the Same Heaven and Hell's Initial, on
Sony Japan), and it was their first really interesting record. Great live band,
though. I missed their usual NYC by way of Austin trip this year.
