If you weren't interested in Cecil Taylor's sexual orientation, stay
away from this snippet of an interview with diamanda gala (from
motion.state51.co.uk). We should note that Galas' brother, to whom she
was very close, was gay and died of AIDS. She began working on the
AIDS-themed Plague Mass afterward.
P: Concerning your persona, there are the ongoing issues around this,
as far as the way you are
presented in the media, what I've read in
interviews, etc. You seem to be often portrayed as this
gigantic, Wagnerian female Vampire Bat ...
D: That weighs 700 pounds? I know! I always
disappoint people when they see I'm not fat. You know
who called me a Satanist the other day?
P: Who?
D: Cecil Taylor! That motherfucker! I said
you're the biggest pederast in New York and you are
calling me a fucking Satanist? You pig! What
happened is that I was in this gay restaurant the other
day with my friends, and I said to myself, I
have had tremendous respect for this man's music for 20
years, so I thought, I'm going to buy him a
drink. So I bought him a drink. The next thing I know ,
he's sitting at my table, and he's looking at
me, and he's talking to his friends and he's saying (in a
low croaky voice) "She's a Satanist".
P: This leads me to a question that I have been
wanting to ask you for a long time, and that is ...
D: Am I a Satanist?

as some zornlisters here probably already know, Ruins are my favorite band.
Far and away, my favorite Ruins album is "Burning Stone." If possible, try
and lind the Japanese version of the album, which adds 10 live bonus tracks.
Other good starters for Ruins are "Stonehenge" and "Hyderomastgroningem".
But do try and hear "Burning Stone" - in my opinion, it's their best.

i'll agree with the suggestions so far. saisoro is great, but not
representative. oddly the follow-up derek + the ruins french release (i forget
the label) was not nearly as strong. the shimmydisc releases (stonehenge,
burning stone and a self-titled one) are great playing, but suffer from poor
sound quality. tatsuya has apparently remastered them for his own magiabutsu
(sp?) label, but i haven't heard those. does anyone know if the knit has or
plans to release them in their shimmy reissue series?
the tzadik ruins release might be a better place to start. better sound, and
just as good. it features matsuda as the bassist, my favorite of the three i'm
aware of (he's no longer in the band) (the band is basically tatsuya yoshida on
drums, vocals with a series of different bassists).
vrresto, on the same french label as the derek/ruins follow-up, is good as well.
others can be a pretty mixd bag. refusal fossil, on skin graft i think or some
other chicago label, is a live/outtake sorta comp, lot of it unnecessary unless
you're going completist. and if the magma overtones are hard for you to take (as
they are me a little and jon perhaps moreso) avoid sympohonica (on tzadik) at
all costs.
if you can find magiabutsu releases, a solo record of tatsuya's called 'one
million years' is maybe my favority record of his, even if it is pretty proggy
too.
tatsuya will be stateside this summer, touring with ybo2!
see ya.

More from the Diamanda Galas interview
(http://motion.state51.co.uk/features/galas/index.html)
D: I was talking with Stanley Crouch the other day, I had a very
interesting conversation with him,
although we have been at war for 20 years. He is
a wonderful writer, and a hilarious and brilliant
person, although he cannot give up certain
attachments which are totally ludicrous.
P: He is pedantic, but you have to admire that
he has a singular genius when it comes to the
history and criticism of jazz
D: Isn't it true? What's so funny is, while we
were talking, out of the blue after talking to him, I got a
record from Wynton Marsalis! It was the last
thing in the world I ever thought I'd get in the mail,
because I am just completely anti-Wynton
Marsalis.
P: He sent you a Wynton Marsalis record?
D: Wynton Marsalis sent me a Wynton record.
Isn't that amazing?
P: I find that totally amazing! What was his
reason for doing this?
D: Because of the talk that I had with Stanley.
I mean he's worked with him (Marsalis) for many
years, This is a very poor way of putting it,
but Wynton's career is very, very supported by Stanley
Crouch. I've talked about it with Butch Morris
and other friends of mine, and his attitude is "Well
now, that's Stanley's new boy". You know how he
(Crouch) is, he did it with Cecil too, and he's
always sleeping with these guys, I can't believe
it! I said to him, "Stanley, you are really the most
cantankerous, problematic person that I know".
But I love him.

Diamanda on Zorn -- the last excerpt I'll send, promise.
P: On the flip side of this issue, one thing that I see in your
hardcore fans, it seems that many of
them are somewhat lost souls that have a
tendency to glom on to any image or personality that is
strong.
D: They do.
P: It is not necessarily your issue, but how do
you deal with this type of fawning adoration?
D: I would assume that this is what people do
with everyone that they see on stage, don't they?
P: It manifests itself to varying degrees. I
mean you have people that are really into John Zorn, but
they do their "fawning" in their bedrooms.
D: I sorry, I thought you were talking about
sex. I somehow just could not imagine fucking to John
Zorn!
P: No, no, that's not what I meant! That would
be dangerous, shit would be getting broken, things
would be falling apart, neighbours would be
picketing in the street ...
D: (Loud laughter) Guys would be pulling their
pliers out and saying "Turn over Bitch!"

It's a good all-around album. Very laid back, very mellow. And very little
of Frisell's trademark twang. Actually, this is the most traditional jazz
guitar I've ever heard him play. You wouldn't guess it was Frisell playing
if you had heard it before knowing he was on there.
If you like what you heard, you won't be disappointed. The whole album is
very good, if not excellent. I also highly recommend Joey Baron's other
solo album, Raised Pleasure Dot. It's very odd but very fun.

also of interest to some might be the two cds by guitarist ron anderson (of
the late, great molecules) and yoshida, "first meeting" & "a is for
accident", as well as the "ronruins" cd that has ron sitting in with the
band. the music on these discs is completely improvised, quite different
from the standard ruins thing, and thousands of times better than derek
bailey wankage. you can order then from ron's website at

Subject: Caine, Bach & Gould
Exciting new release on its way this spring from Winter & Winter: The Uri
Caine Ensemble, _The Goldberg Variations_. According to the press material,
Caine performs his own, new variations of the piece, juxtaposes "foreign
sound elements" with one another, and samples Glenn Gould=B4s classic
recording of the piece. From the press sheet: "Bach=B4s music dallies in a
Leipzig cathedral, jumps out through the window and lands on a streetcorner
in New York, visits a Jewish wedding, spends some time in New Orleans, and
plunges into wild, free-form trumpeting before seeking refuge in blind
panic in the throbbing lights of a drum=B4n=B4bass club."
The players:
Uri Caine - piano, cembalo, keyboards
Barbara Walker - voice
Anegret Siedel - violin
Vittorio Ghiemli - viola di gamba
Don Byron - clarinet
Ralph Alessi - trumpet
Drew Grass - bass
Ralph Peterson - drums
DJ Olive - turntables
Can hardly wait! All the best, Stephen

Subject: Winter & Winter and Others Up for Trade
I have two brand-spankin=B4 new W&W releases available for trade:
Uri Caine Ensemble/La Gaia Scienza, _Robert Schumann: Love Fugue_
Here Caine takes on Robert Schumann=B4s lieder, interspersed with the four
movements of Schumann=B4s Piano Quartet Opus 47; the latter are "played
straight" by the piano/string trio La Gaia Scienza, while Caine et. al.
rework the lieder in a way familiar to folks who have heard his Mahler
recordings; perhaps a tad more restrained. Some silly vocal improvisation
by David Moss as well as some poetry readings by several contemporary
writers, including Caine=B4s mother (!).
I also have a copy of Fred Frith=B4s _Traffic Continues_, played by Ensemble
Modern, Zeena Parkins and Ikue Mori.
And while I=B4m at it, the following are also up for trade:
Pago Libre, _Wake Up Call_ (Leo Records)
Simon Picard/John Wolf Brennan/Eddie Pr=E9vost, _En=B7tropo=B7logy_
(For 4 Ears)
Urs Leimgruber, _Ten Pieces for Saxophone_ (For 4 Ears)
