Michael & Zornists,
The above information is quite old; I'd imagine that the piece in the
latest Signal to Noise may have been the source for it. Last Saturday the
Arkestra did an evening at the Knit to earn some of the resources necessary
to rebuild the House of Ra. The following is the announcement from the
Concerts Area of my Saturn Web that gives the particulars for the event, as
well as the basic facts about the fire:
==============================================
The Arkestra @ The Knit
Elson Nascimento do Santos announced that the Sun Ra Arkestra under the
direction of Marshall Allen will appear at
The Knitting Factory
74 Leonard Street
New York City
(5 blocks below Canal between Broadway & Church)
on Saturday March 11, 2000.
This event will be a benefit concert to raise some of the funds needed to
fix the Arkestra house in Philadelphia that was damaged by a fire on
January 16, 2000. Those who were expressing interest in supporting the
Arkestra in defraying the large costs of fire damage repairs at the
historic Arkestra house are encouraged to attend on March 11.
Sun Ra Arkestra t-shirts and A Song For The Sun Arkestra CDs will also be
sold at the event to help raise funds to fix the house. For additional
information from the Knitting Factory, visit their website or call
212-219-3006.
==============================================
Although the concert has passed, anyone wishing to buy a copy of the CD or
enquire about the very nice tee-shirts might want to contact them. These
are proud men who are trying to rebuild and get back to the vital work of
keeping the Arkestra in existence; please respect their dignity.
Hope this helps.

I hope people don't mind me posting this here.. i would certainly want to
know after the wonderful performances i have seen from Ellis, so i'm
assuming there are a few other like-minded on the list. you may know Ellis'
bass playing from the What We Live group, with Larry Ochs [of Rova]. What We
Live has several CD releases, mostly on soul note, i think, with guests like

Urgent message for all people who know Lisle Ellis
I am writing on Lisle Ellis' behalf to let people know that he is
currently
receiving emergency medical attention in San Francisco for liver and
kidney

you
can donate. At this moment in time, Lisle is living from a van in San
Francisco (where he has lived since 1992) and is at present homeless. He
has
no telephone number where he can be reached. More to the point, he is in
debt and is without any income at this time. Here is an excerpt from a
recent E mail sent to me from him , dated March 7, 2000.
.......My situation is CRITICAL. I need some $$$ to

needs. right now i've my van to live in. i guess that
is more than some have but knowing that dosen't help
my spirits much or dosen't keep me any warmer at
night. i'm accepting any donations that you or any
others may offer. PLEASE let people know what is
happening since i've no access to phone and only very
limited access to email. (please pass along my email
address). anyone who wants to help can do so so by
making a deposit at any Toronto Dominion bank (based in Canada):

To all those who received a previous E mail yesterday from me,
Many people have responded to the last E mail sent regarding Lisle Ellis
and
his current circumstance. Here is some additional information sent to me
from Jed Bishop, trombonist from Chicago. This will help anyone who wishes
to contribute to Lisle's present situation. His E mail is as follows:
Hello Paul,
I wired some money to Lisle's account based on the info you gave in your E
mail, but some
additional info is also necessary to make a money transfer to his account:
the Toronto Dominion branch # is actually 47201
the bank's routing # is 026009593
the bank's institution # is 004
there is a "designation code" that may have to be prefixed to Lisle's
account #; that code is 040
I got this info from the 1 800 number for the bank, but you may want to
pass
it on to anyone interested in making a wire transfer.

For those of you who wish to mail a US money order or cheque in Lisle
Ellis's name directly to me (I live only 7 blocks from a Toronto Dominion

to
a cheque, since there will be no delay in the clearing time of a deposited
cheque

This is a great album! Laid back traditional jazz
stuff. Although someone said they'd never heard
Frisell play so traditionally, try the "Songs We Know"
CD with Frisell and Fred Hersch.
I see the new Joey Baron album, do out this
spring, has the same line up as "Down Home." This is
a must have for a guy like me.

Seconded.
Also Arthur Blythe is in great shape. You wouldn't guess it was
Blythe playing unless you read the credits.
As Tom recommends Raised Pleasure Dot, I'd recommend "Crackshot",
with the same lineup, but different -musically speaking- from Down Home.

Continuing that thread: This morning I put on Don Cherry/Ed Blackwell
ECM duet, El Corazon, for the first time in a few years. I had
forgotten Cherry's facile, traditional piano rendition of Monk's Bemsha
Swing -- surprised even. It's not just the critics that fall into these

Also, was listening to Stravinsky's Les Noces -- anybody else find this
chorus plus percussion work reminiscent of Harry Partch (altho it
precedes Partch)....

I might not have listened to the right Harry Partch because the comparison
never came to me. I am a huge fan of LES NOCES and consider that this too
often overlooked piece is one of the masterpieces of this century. I dream
sometimes that people would give up on CARMINA BURANA and instead listen to
LES NOCES... (or at least stop making statements about CARMINA BURANA until
they have listened to LES NOCES).

'refusal fossil' is the only ruins i have, and i think it is great. the
lo-fi crap sound only enhances the experience for me. it does have a high
prog-rock component (i think one of the later tunes is a prog-rock medley
of some sort), though (which is no problem to my ears). i've heard two
live bootlegs from 98 and 99, and they did not strike me as radically
different from refusal fossil...which makes me curious about the other
reccommendations being given on the list. whatever the case, i really
enjoy refusal fossil.

For the record, Down Home has Frisell, Ron Carter, Joey Baron, and Arthur
Blythe on Sax; it is very straightforward, as tom notes.
Raised Pleasure Dot i *think* is by Baron's earlier group, Barondown, with
Steve Swell on trombone and Ellery Eskelin on sax. Strange
instrumentation for a fun trio. I'm not much of a fan of this band, but I
know several people who love it. They have two (?) other albums, the
names of which I forget.
(There may be some other bands, too; I recall an album by Baron called
'crackshot' - maybe this is a Barondown album?)
Finally, there's his more recent band consisting of Baron, John Medeski on
organ, and Marc Ribot on guitar. There are several bootlegs of this band
in action floating around, and this band is by far my favorite Baron-led
band. I think they began as an all-improv unit (i heard one tape where
they kept jokingly referring to every jam as 'song #1'), but 'real' songs
with 'real' names somehow came to be.

I saw this band at the Knitting Factory recently and I also think
they're a great band. Also my favorite Baron led band. They
definitely had written music to play. I would say that there was a
lot of improvisation in the music but every tune had a chart. (Even
the 20-30 min. long droning piece that Joey introduced "...this one
is for lovers...")
