Guilty as charged! Rob was my jazz teacher at college and remains a good
friend. Storrs and I have worked together for years. Glad you enjoyed the
record, it is a beautiful disc. Louie has a web site at:
www.peak.org/~louierec
with samples from most of the other discs.

Yeah, like I REALLY had any doubt that it was you, Dave... ;-)
Thanks for the web address - I've spent the last hour sampling some of the
wares in glorious RealAudio and still feel my wallet protesting in advance
already... for Zornlisters at large, BTW, I'll add that this is really for
jazzheads only - if you're into metal or noise you won't find too much here.
Klezmer fans, on the other hand, might ought to take a peek...
Seriously, Dave, fine job on the Blakeslee disc... the sound is as fine as
the content. And I state that as a now-jaded New York record company
type...

I'll second Steve's comments on Rob Blakeslee. Caught a live set a year ago
in Portland with Blakeslee and Roswell Rudd and was mightily impressed.
"Emphatic and empathetic" are nice descriptions for his work.

sorry for the promotional intrusion, and further apologies if you receive=20

I'm proud to announce the release of the latest CD on my label:
Erstwhile 005: Keith Rowe/G=FCnter M=FCller/Taku Sugimoto-The World Turned U=
pside=20
Down
Keith Rowe and G=FCnter M=FCller are both prominent members of the European=20
improv circuit. Rowe, who is best known for his groundbreaking work with AMM=
=20
(the seminal improvising collective he co-founded in 1965 with Eddie Pr=E9vo=
st=20
and Lou Gare), also currently leads the Music In Movement Electronic=20
Orchestra, an all-star group featuring many of Europe's premier electronic=20
musicians. M=FCller has released numerous records on his For 4 Ears label,=20
including recent collaborations with Voice Crack, Otomo Yoshihide, Jim=20
O'Rourke and Erik M. Taku Sugimoto is best known for his gorgeous solo CD,=20
Opposite (hat Noir), for his projects with Kevin Drumm (on Meme and=20
BOXmedia), and as a prominent figure in the Japanese improvising underground=
.
The World Turned Upside Down documents their first meeting as a trio (and th=
e=20
first meeting ever between Rowe and Sugimoto), captured in vivid detail in=20
concert at Les Instants Chavir=E9s in October of '99. The performance builds=
=20
upon Sugimoto's guitar reflections, with Rowe and M=FCller slowly tracing=20
jagged spirals around his ever-evolving line. Much like an AMM performance,=20
this is a journey with no discernible beginning or end, striking a precariou=
s=20
balance between tranquility and turbulence. The front cover was painted by=20
Rowe, and the gorgeous drawings and calligraphy which adorn the rest of the=20
package come from a tour diary kept by Masae Tanabe.=20
"The trio evolves into an electroacoustic ecosystem of insect chirps,=20
bog-creature glissandi and Sugimoto's lone guitar qua guitar, whose ghostly=20
presence soaks the proceedings with a sober grace. No strangers to the art=20
of palpable restraint, the participants create a masterpiece of=20
understatement in an idiom as unforced as it is entrancing."-Robert Lim

I should not mention this one as a first try, but I am amazed at how good
SAISORO is. I was fearing the worst when I heard about John proposing to Ruins
and Derek to play together. I was expecting a gimmick. To my surprise, the
records works fantastically well. It is neither a juxtaposition of genres (as
is too often the case with such against-nature collaborations), nor a adjust-
ment of one to the style of the other (as in collaborations with a "mythic"
artist). It is almost a perfect morphing where the sum is (blaspheme?) larger
than the parts. I am not saying that this level is sustained through the
complete record, but I could play non-stop the first 3/4 tracks without
the slightest attempt at a yawn (a exploit for me these days).
Patrice.

yeah, agreed, and seeing this trio live a couple of years ago at the Knit was
pretty exciting also. I don't recall the second collaborative CD being quite
as strong. the couple of times I've seen the Ruins by themselves live, I've
enjoyed myself, but they relied a bit too much on Magma homages for my
tastes. to be fair, I think they've had at least one personnel change since I
saw them last. as for records, I'm not a huge fan, but I believe that Burning
Stone and Stonehenge are the ones most often cited to start with.

From MTV Online
It appears that Axl Rose is gaining a collaborator and losing a drummer.
Rose, the sole
remaining original member of Guns N' Roses, has been
working with the
near-indescribable Buckethead, an avant-garde
multi-instrumentalist
best known as a rapid-fire electric guitarist.
Sources say that the
two have been spending time working on material
together and that
Buckethead is involved in the recording process for
the upcoming Guns N'
Roses album, although they add that he's not
necessarily the
band's new guitar player.
The group has been
without a guitarist since the departure of Robin
Finck, who had
replaced original guitarist Slash. Finck left GN'R last
August to rejoin Nine
Inch Nails (see "Guitarist Robin Finck
Leaves GN'R To Return To NIN").
Guns N' Roses manager
Doug Goldstein declined to comment on
Buckethead or any
possible replacements for Finck, other than to say
the search continues.
Buckethead,
traditionally crowned by an upside down Kentucky Fried
Chicken bucket on his
head, has guested on dozens of records,
soundtracks and
games, and has released at least four solo albums, the
most recent being a
1999 effort called "Monsters And Robots." Guests
on that LP include
Primus bassist Les Claypool, drummer Brain,
P-Funk's Bootsy
Collins, and progressive producer/musician Bill
Laswell (Herbie
Hancock, DJ Spooky, Yoko Ono). Buckethead also
played in Laswell's
hip-hop flavored Praxis with Brain, Collins, and
Collins' P-Funkmate
Bernie Worrell, among others.
The guitarist also
made brief, frenetic appearances onstage with Primus
during Ozzfest '99
and toured with the band last year (see "Primus
Lines Up Post-Family
Values Dates"). He was also a key
performer at the 1999
International Progressive Music Festival in San
Francisco last May.
Meanwhile, it appears
that drummer Josh Freese, who's been manning
the Guns N' Roses
skins in the studio for the past two years, will not be
returning to the band
once he completes his current stint with A
Perfect Circle (see
"Nine Inch Nails Taps A Perfect Circle For
U.S. Tour").
Fronted by Tool's
Maynard James Keenan and featuring guitarist Billy
Howerdel, A Perfect
Circle is touring with Nine Inch Nails most likely
until the end of
June. Drummer Freese is a rotating member of The
Vandals and also
plays the occasional outing with Devo.
A management
spokesperson for A Perfect Circle said Freese's status
with Guns N' Roses
was "up in the air." In possibly a telling move, an A
Perfect Circle press
release issued by Virgin listed only The Vandals
among Freese's
credits, and not GN'R.
Sources close to
Freese confirm that the drummer is out of the band,
reportedly at the end
of his contract and no longer willing to remain
available for the
Guns N' Roses project. Freese's personal manager
could not be reached
for comment.
GN'R manager
Goldstein says that he has not heard from any official
representative
regarding Freese's status. He adds that the drummer's
parts are done, and
seeing as how Guns will not be touring anytime
soon, the door is
open for Freese's return in the future.
