gossip?
I recommend the 2CD retrospective on entropy records- both for those just
starting to check him out, and for fans. It's a well-done cross-section of
his recordings, with many photos of his creations.. 'paganini's last
testimony' is quite disturbed and interesting, but i believe it's out of
print.
i caught a solo show last year and enjoyed it quite a bit. he's a very
intense man; one of those who, in performance, make me [albeit respectfully-
even with a bit of awe] doubt their sanity. another that comes to mind is
jaap blonk...
no idea about whether the above gossip is true..

Bill Ashline wrote:
"One sees clearly with the urban planning of
Robert Morris, a willful intent to make living in Manhattan as difficult as
possible for those without resources..."
Sorry about this, Bill, but my learned colleague Dan Hill has asked me to
point out that that should be Robert Moses. Such pedantry!
Someone mentioned the Paul Bley book a few posts back. Just wanted to
mention that Dan and I interviewed Bley at the end of last year when he was
over for the ECM 30th Birthday Festival in Brighton. We found him extremely
engaging and funny. Had a couple of great stories about Robert Moog and
about Herbie Hancock. We should have the interiew up as text, audio and
video later this month. I'll keep you posted.
The consensus here seemes to be that the JT interview wasn't that great. I
beg to differ; I think it's pretty inspirational. Sure, there's not a whole
lot of depth there about working practices and so on, but how can you cover
stuff like that with such limited space. What comes over clearly is the
man's passion and anger. His admiration of artists and musicians (even
artists he has no real time for - eg Marsalis) is refreshing, while his
disdain for the industry and for media in general is spot on. Likewise his
pinpointing of TV specifically as a draining waste of time (reminded me of
the White Dot association's inspiring anti-TV polemic 'Get A Life'). Yes,
the man's pissed off, and sounds, at times, paranoid. But isn't he
justified? And he's doing something about it - trying to assert complete
independence in an increasingly, crushingly corporate world.
On the recent goodies front, it's been a promising start to the year, I
reckon. Here are some of the things that have tickled my fancy (some of
them might be 1999 tail-enders; I am writing from an Old World backwater,
after all...

I'd like to see an encounter between Derrida and Zorn too but I think
Bourdieu would do much better as an interviewer, especially since when
Derrida is in interviews he spends so much time talking about tape

Random Acoustics will be resuscitated very soon, after a hiatus of a few
years. Georg Grawe's not running the label anymore; he's evidently living
somewhere in California (anyone know where?). I know that RA will be
releasing a solo Thomas Lehn CD imminently, but I'm not sure what this means
for their back catalog or what other new releases are coming up. I haven't
heard the Lehn yet, but I should be getting a bunch of copies soon.
so, I finally got to see Lehn perform over the weekend, in duo with Gerry
Hemingway (Friday night at Bard, Saturday at Experimental Intermedia in NYC).
the Bard show had a nice relaxed atmosphere, with a room full of
shaggy-haired college kids chugging cheap wine straight from the bottle. they
played 2 sets, about 90 minutes total. the second set ended with a crazy,
raucous piece in which both of them were beating the hell out of their
instruments, so hard I thought something might break. they stopped on a dime,
the crowd went nuts, and then they did one last supersilent piece. a
millisecond after they finished, subtly trailing off into silence, the clock
in the chapel next door began chiming out 10 PM, and the musicians and the
audience waited for it to end before again cheering loudly. it was a
memorable, serendipitous moment.
the XI concert also went really well, despite the terrible weather. it was
SRO, with the crowd mostly being mostly older, XI-types, but with some young
'uns mixed in. musically, the show was very good, with some amazing moments,
maybe not quite as consistent as their Bard show the night before, but still
pretty kick-ass. it seemed to me that they were a bit nervous in the first
set (it was Lehn's NYC debut), but the second set was gorgeous, the best of
the two nights.
what impressed me the most seeing Lehn live was his range of sounds and
ideas, all produced by an analog synth. I've heard a ton of his music now,
and he virtually never seems to repeat himself. I'd say over the two nights,
he had a 90-95 percent rate of interesting ideas, which is pretty impressive
for any free improv musician, let alone an electronic one.
