Subject: Understanding/appreciating Jap Noise
Hi all,
I recently took the plunge and bought my first JApanese noise related
album, this being Maldoror's "She.." I have given it a pretty fair
hearing, and I really cant seemd to fathom any kind of meaning, or
pleasure from it. In fact It makes me quite uneasy.
Am I looking at it too objectively, as in form more structured music's
perspective?
Is there a better way to get aquainted with this genre, suggestions
please.
Is it simply "Shock art"
Is there any reviews of this particualr album anywhere, ie did it get a
good rap, or did I pick up on a particualrly odd piece?
Hope someone can shed some light,

Hi ppl,
I forward you this message sent by Trey Spruance's website, The Web Of
Mimicry. I seriously advise you to go listen to those Estradasphere
samples if you haven't already, they're amazing. Some of them sound to
me like Bar Kokhba meets country music, but in a very original way.
Secret Chiefs 3 re-releases coming up...

WoM is pleased and proud to announce that Estradasphere's
fabulous new CD "It's Understood" will be the inaugural release on
our new MIMICRY RECORDS label. The level of musicianship is
truly amazing! It's a must, particularly for fans of Mr. Bungle and
Secret Chiefs 3. There are several mp3 files you can check for
yourself on our web site (http://www.webofmimicry.com) where
you'll also find Trey's review. We can only gaurantee this
introductory, low price through the release date on March 9, so we
suggest you pre-order the CD now.
"First Grand Constitution and Bylaws" by Secret Chiefs 3 will be re-
issued on MIMICRY RECORDS sometime this spring. An exact
release date will be announced as soon as we know it. Rumor has
it that the bonus track will be "Theatrum of Suprasensory Universes
- - vol. 2: Emir of the Bees). "Second Grand Constitution and
Bylaws: Hurqalya" will likely be re-issued within a month after that
probably with "Zulfikar" bonus track(s). AND there's a new Secret
Chiefs 3 CD in the pipeline too.
Finally, a Secret Chiefs 3/Estradasphere Tour is in the works for
the May/June timeframe. No, we don't know where or when yet,
but we'll let you know when we do.
We at WoM are going to take a break until February 28, so we
may be a little slow in answering e-mails and stuff for the next
couple of weeks. Please remember that if you order stuff by e-mail
to split your credit card info between two or more messages for
security purposes.
We hope that our new domain (http://www.webofmimicry.com)
makes it easier for you to find us and that you enjoy what you find.

well, after a few months of trying, I've finally managed to get my hands on
some copies of this superb CD, on Christof Kurzmann's Charhizma label, based
in Vienna, and not distributed in the US as of now (his co-productions with
other labels are distributed here, but not the Charhizma-only ones.)
anyway, there's a track listing, MP3s, and some reviews (although mostly in
German) at www.charhizma.com/quart/index.html
if you'd like one, please e-mail me ASAP to reserve a copy, and send payment
as follows:
$14 US each postpaid within the United States
$15 US each postpaid to Canada
$17 US each postpaid overseas
All payments must be made in US funds. Cash and money orders shipped
immediately (mail cash at your own risk). Shipments paid for with checks held
until they clear.
Please send your order to:

sorry for the commercial nature of this post, but I figured I'd give people

There is certainly something to this theory, but I think in the case of
mailing lists, women in general may also just have less "free" time to
devote to posting, or else they're more into communicating w/ friends
individually via e-mail than communicating with a whole group. I'd have to
agree that on the whole, men seem to get involved in more list arguments.
However, those are broad generalizations. One mailing list I'm on is
frequently dominated by a woman who has appointed herself the leading
authority on all subjects and feels compelled to post a response to every
comment made (sigh, or more like, yawn). And I have seen some really
vicious flame wars break out between women, where men were among the
conciliators.
If Deborah Tannen is looking for a subject for her next book.....
>Don't worry, compatibility in taste is almost irrelevant to any
>serious relationship
Another interesting topic. I suppose it depends on how godawful the loved
one's taste is, exactly. I know from sad experience that near-complete
musical compatibility is not a guarantee of eternal love. But on the other
hand, I wouldn't even consider a casual date with someone who liked, say,
Mariah Carey or Kenny G. It's OK if cinematic tastes are somewhat
dissimilar, because I like going to movies by myself anyway, and I don't
care if someone loves steak, even though I'm pro-tofu. But I could never
contemplate a romantic relationship with someone who might subject me to
the Top 40 or pseudo-jazz on a car radio.

Subject: Knit / WKCR / anyone have access?
Hello folks-- if this isn't an appropriate cross-post, I wouldn't know what
would be...
Looking for some session details. Most have to do with Knit gigs, WKCR
broadcasts, or NYC gigs. Any leads, help, or mysteries solved will be
appreciated. If you know someone with access to tapes; if you were there; if
you can put me in contact with..., if you feel like hunting anything down
for me...
- ----------
There is a WKCR session from June 1, 1992. Resulted in a Matt Shipp Trio on
7" vinyl from YAKUZA magazine. No personnel noted, so I need a BASS PLAYER
(WP probably, but I'd like it confirmed), and a DRUMMER.
Knitting Factory session resulting in
Prima Materia: Peace on Earth (music of John Coltrane) KFW 158 (CD) 1994
New York City
w/ Louie Belogenis (ts) Allan Chase (ss; as) John Zorn (as-1,3)
Joe Gallant (b) William Parker (b) Rashied Ali (d)
I need a date for this one.
Knitting Factory session resulting in
Derek Bailey, John Zorn & William Parker: Harras AVAN 056 (CD) 1995
I also need a date for this one.
There is an early '70's recording of APOGEE, w/ DS Ware, Gene Ashton
(Cooper-Moore) and Marc Edwards which was broadcast and done to reel-to-reel
by WKCR. Doesn't everyone here think this should be re-broadcast,
considering the places these folk have gone since? Who would need talking
to?
That's it. Thanks for the help,
Best regards,
Rick Lopez

Although I've only given this one listen, I have pretty mixed feelings
about it. The jazz element is a bit too "recognizable"/cliched(?) for my
tastes, and the drumming locks into these rocking muscle-y patterns that I
don't like. But the record scratching/sampling (which is laid on pretty
thick at some points) is nice when it's not so obviously in sync with the
drumming and sax/bass clarinet. It'll get your attention though, no doubt
(i.e., shit happens, unlike the 2nd Orchester 33.3 record). The closing
minutes of the first track is this total ascension into chaotic noise
that's very impressive.

maybe a naive question here, maybe not
I'm visiting NY for a couple weeks. Went to Tonic last night for the first
time (Liminal playing) and was rather surprised at the amount of mousse in
the room (as in Vidal Sassoon). Seemed quite a trendy place.
Might anyone have the goods to point me toward some more underground
clubs/perf. venues, spots that would perhaps not be found in the Voice?

Alternately, I too am a career-spanning fan, and I find the new album to be
a masterful return to form. I've seen it written that the album is the
third in a trilogy that started with "Pornography" and "Disintigration", an
observation I would agree with.
Course, I liked the previous effort quite a bit, too.
