Interesting debate, but I find it curious since most of my female friends
love avante garde music and jazz. however in the exchange of how'd it
happens, I have noticed a lot of prog roots, whereas all of the women I know
into the music have come from a jazz context.
I came to Zorn (and thus the rest of it all) through a Kurt Weill tribute
album that Hal Willner produced. That in conjunction with the Mingus
album that Willner also did threw me into the explorations of esoteric and
avant jazz in the most wonderful ways.
Back to the gender issue though, I don't see as many women at shows
either, most of my friends who are fans can't really afford to go to them, but
also, a lot of the men in the crowd can be real jerks, groping, pushing,
trying to intimidate, do just being inconsiderate to smaller people in the
audience (male and female)
so that's a part of it too I am sure.
I often wonder why when I go to avant shows here in SF, there seems to be
crowd of avid fans, who are very respectful and intent on the music (and
the gender gap among these folks is not so wide) and then there are lots
of frat boy/hipster types who just want to be rowdy and disruptive. I
rarely see women making this sort of a commotion at the jazz shows that I go
to...
just an observation.
On the queer front, I know a least a few queers who love this music, from
both sides of the gender front. You are not alone!

Scott H nicely put it that:
Bob Ostertag's personal life is irrelevant, but he seems to deal (playfully,
oddly) with queerness of all colors in some of his music/performances.
The same, I think, can be said of Chris Cochrane's work, although maybe not as
overtly.
And while on the subj, I don't know if Justin Bond has done a lot of
experimental stuff (he's part of the hugely popular, unseen by me, Kiki and Herb
show in NYC). He told me he was involved in several Ostertag projects, and Panty
Christ (w/Otomo) has got to hold the title for biggest, flamingest avant hoot of
all time.
Zorn, also, is gay, or at least that's what it says on the bathroom wall at
Tonic. (For those who've not frequented that loo, someone changed it to "GrAYt"
and then someone else made it "GrAYting" -- one of my fave graffitos of late).
I agree, this thread doesn't need to continue along the lines of innuendo and
outing, but are there others that deal with the such subj matter? I know little
about the SF scene, but I'm guessing there's got to be some queer
experimentalism (musical, I mean) out there.
np: Roman Bunka: Color Me Cairo (1995, enja) - live record with oud, piano,
percussion, kanoon (what's a kanoon?) and the great Malachi Favors on bass
(which is why I got it). Bunka's German, and the rest of the band (save Malachi)
are Egyptian. Does anyone know anything else about Bunka or this disc?

Yes, I agree! It is time for the Chaim Witz/Stanley Eisen Tribute CD. These
two musical forces have had such an affect on modern day musicians that it
is obvious how important they are.

Has anyone else seen or heard of the nike video's zorn did? If so, do
you know how to get a copy of them. I am doing a research paper on john

Also, in comment to the no girls thing, I found it to be the same

Please let me know if the Video thing is in the public domain.

The one with Joseph Byrd? I remember this album, one of the few which a)
was really out there for the late 1960s, and b) hasn't been reissued on CD.
Unfortunately I lost it somewhere along the way, but as I remember, Byrd
was a disciple of John Cage, and this album uses all kinds of electronics
in unusual ways. I've seen it referred to in positive words, perhaps in
Roger Sutherland's Perspectives in New Music. Is this about to be reissued?

They were one of the handful of U.S. bands along with Silver Apples, Lothar and the Hand People, 50 Foot Hose, and West Coast Pop Art Experiment who were true experimentalists in the rock field at the time. Theramin lovers should embrace this one with reverence- it's loaded with those instantly recognizable frequency swoops. It has not been reissued in the U.S., but a CD *has* been reissued on either BGO or Big Beat- both British labels, and I think has also been reissued on a German label.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here before, but Tone-Dialing will be

It is out on CD, I have a copy around here somewhere, bought it ~8 months
ago. Wasn't hard to find.

i just got my order from the downtown music gallery and got some great

that i didn't want(i already have it). for those of you that may not know,
it Gerry Heingway on drums and Thomas Lehn on analogue synth.
i think you can download a track here:

anyway, if anyone wants it for $20, that'd be cool. i can fed-ex from work,
so postage isn't a problem within the USA. otherwise, i'll have to hasle
with returning it.
thanks,

I've been enjoying reading these, but I haven't seen these two particular
gateways to free jazz/etc. mentioned:
+ The movie _Stranger Than Paradise_, with the great string quartet
soundtrack by John Lurie, the record of which had a piece called
"The Resurrection of Albert Ayler" on the flip side;
+ The now sadly defunct nm-list, which was (I guess) the direct
ancestor to zorn-list. Is anybody else (other than mike rizzi)
still here?

Hm! It's still in a lot of stores in its original incarnation.
Eagerly awaiting the Columbia reissues...
