Hi Zornsters!
I'm new to the list and I was hoping I could get some listening
suggestions for non-Zorn recordings (still in print). I have tons of
different Zorn/Zorn-collaboration recordings, and I feel like it's about
time to branch out some. Maybe a list of 15 favorite recordings (I know
it's hard to put such a limited number on these things). Like many of you,
I like just about any style of music. Anyway, this is a great list!
Thanks!

A long, long time ago (2, 3 years?), the Zorn List was swamped (in a good
way, though) with lists of essential albums. It should still be in the
archives, though I can't remember the exact dates.
Rather than duplicating that onslaught, I'll just list the albums which
received the most votes, including Zorn-related material. (Credit goes to
whoever compiled this in the first place; can't remember who.)
23 Naked City - Naked City
17 Davis, Miles - Kind of Blue
15 Zorn, John - Bar Kokhba
12 Coleman, Ornette - Beauty Is a Rare Thing
12 Coltrane, John - A Love Supreme
11 Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante
10 Beatles - White Album
10 Naked City - Torture Garden
9 Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
9 Coleman, Ornette - The Shape of Jazz to Come
9 Dolphy, Eric - Out to Lunch
8 Davis, Miles - Bitches' Brew
7 Ayler, Albert - Spiritual Unity
7 Davis, Miles - In A Silent Way
7 Naked City - Radio
7 Reich, Steve - Music for 18 Musicians
6 King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic
6 Masada - Alef
6 Sharrock, Sonny - Ask the Ages
6 Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
6 Waits, Tom - Rain Dogs
6 Zappa, Frank - Weasels Ripped My Flesh
6 Zorn, John - Spy vs. Spy
There's a list of 27 more albums, but I won't bother posting it unless
anyone's interested.
Later,
Ben

I was wondering if any one had any information on Nicolas Slominsky's

Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns was meant as a joke and I was
wondering if anyone had the video and could confirm this. Any help is

It was May of '98. and the reason I remember is that there were so many
messages flooding my in box when I got back from Victo that year, that my
account had stopped accepting mail, and I got unsubscribed from the list for
a while. a sad story, I know.

In addition to the archive thread already mentioned, check the archives for
the first couple weeks of every year for everyone's best-of-the-year lists.

Hi Zornsters -
I now realize the error of my ways. I didn't mean to open up a subject
so wide it would bust mailboxes. I will definitely check out the 1998
archives and "The best of the year" lists. If anybody does have some
recommendations they'd love to share I'd welcome private e-mails. I just
don't want to open up a month-long list battle (that might have already been
fought) over which Coltrane album is the most quintessential.
Thanks!

Shawn Lane is going to Europe at the end of the week to do some dates with
Jonas. Not sure who else they will be playing with, possibly Indian
percussionist Selvaganesh, who they played with in Europe about 3 or 4 months
ago. Dont hold your breath for any US dates.

Dear Zorn-List:
On February 23rd, several exciting things are happening in New York..
unfortunately, they overlap.
1) Eyvind Kang @Tonic (8pm)
I've never heard him (her?) before.
2) ACOUSTIC: (Michael Bocian, guitar; Mark Feldman, violin; Scott Lee, bass;
Victor Jones, drums)
@ Cornelia Cafe (9pm)
3) (not too exciting, but) "Ananda" with my friends Tony Gonzalez & Maria
Millar "sitting in"
@ Elbow Room (10pm)
Which one would you (i.e Should I) go to, and why?
(also, if you have OTHER suggestions, feel free..)
Thanks,

Do you mean the small j-shaped thingies that cover one spine and have a
blurb on the front? In storing the CDs, I tend to wrap them similarly
around the CD booklet. For those that are too large (such as the
music/romance series with their additional outer sleeves, or the
double-disc such as Lacrosse), I've found that they fit inserted
sideways into the packaging.
Of course, those who are not compulsive packrats might just toss them
away :-)

Wow, sorry. That's a really bad term.
What I mean is a piece of music that sounds like a
process unfolding... I don't know how else to describe
it. You know, a performance of "Four^6" *unfolds* in a
way that the earlier chance-derived or indeterminate
works (like, for instance, "Music Of Changes" or
"Fontana Mix") just don't. To my ears at least, the
later works have an incredible relevance to whatever
time and space in which they happen to be performed...
I guess what I'm really talking about here is the
"nowness" factor (oddly enough to the recent
discussion, a quality most highly valued in improv).
