While we can argue about the ethics of bootlegs all day, I must say that a
very generous soul on alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.bootlegs has made available
some AMAZING bootlegs of Naked City and Bar Kokhba shows. For a zorn
fanatic who has never had a chance to see a live performance, this has been
a godsend.
A previous post suggested that more folks on this list start using Napster
http://www.napster.com ), a program that lets online users share their mp3
files. It's a fantastic program. Anyone online running the program gives
other Napster users access to their mp3 library. Just run a search for the
song or artist and Napster locates users that are currently sharing the
song. You can list providers by line speed so depending on your connection
you can have whatever song you want in a matter of minutes!
Presently, there aren't a lot of folks offering the more obscure weird stuff
that we're into, but we can change that! If you're capable, turn your primo
tracks into mp3's and start using Napster. I usually leave my computer
running during the day so if you search for "bar kokhba" or "naked city"
you're welcome to download and enjoy the tracks I mentioned before.

i'm afraid so. when i left virgin to start up the motion website, i was
hoping the series (loosely termed the "ambt" series because of its cat
number prefix) would carry on i my absence, but sadly not.

yes, they're all corkers, too. i think that between them, david and kevin
pretty much set the standard for compilations generally (though, again, i'm
biased).

Subject: News for Lulu?
Hello, all!
I just recently "Discovered" Zorn for myself and am in
dumb-struck awe.
I have a lot that I would like to discuss, but am first sort
of hanging back to get an idea of the tempo of discussions
on this group.
In the mean time, I have had it reccomended to me that I
should pick up "News for Lulu," yet was also informed that
it's no longer being produced. Any help in finding it
available?

Yep, it's that same feller who's been posting for a few months now (also
some Last Exit and Praxis). I was announcing them for a little bit here
before I got scared off... =)
In any case, the most recent postings were six Bar Kokhba tracks from
Cologne in '97, and just this morning: a performance of "Rugby" from '84.
BTW, those of you who've been downloading: were there only 8 tracks from
that Naked City Plus broadcast? (Now *that* was excellent: all-soundtrack
covers, ranging from "Rosemary's Baby" to "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.")

I brought this up a few weeks ago, and got no response. I was told by
my record shop that somebody had bought ECM, that they were cleaning
house and then reprinting everything with the new imprint. I've
forgotten the names involved.

You can find it on occasion, so keep looking. I got a still-sealed copy just
a few months ago at a local store. I feel sure, however that Zorn is bound
to re-issue it one day in his Archival series...at least I hope so.

You might have better luck spelling the name "Zawinul".

|> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <|
- -Tom Waits at the Beacon, night 3 (3.5 hours, ribot/cohen trio, he didn't do
'the piano has been drinking,' but that's my only complaint)
- -The Residents Wormwood show, Irving Plaza (not a novelty band -- theatre of the
absurd)
- -Henry Threadgill Make a Move with Brian Carrott, Knitting Factory (how'd the
best band get better? vibes.)
- -Ori Kaplan/Andrew Bemkey/Geoff Mann with Susie Ibarra at neues kabarett at the
Brecht Forum (nothing but great players, part of the jump festival and part of
the neues kabarett series which i curate, but no bias here. stay tuned for
another neues k/jump series in may).
- -Fushitsusha, Tonic
- -Fred Anderson/William Parker/Kidd Jordan/Hamid Drake, Vision Festival (wasn't
there supposed to be a disc on eremite?)
- -The Artist, after hours at Tramps (so what if he can't make records anymore?)
discoveries/surprises
- -getting Merzbow
- -Johnny Dowd's Pictures from Life's Other Side
- -Knitting on the Roof (wouldn't have expected this to be good all the way
through)
- -Jaap Blonk at Roulette
- -John Lee Hooker Alone (2cd on Tomato) (finally, the hooker disc i've been
waiting for)
- -Joelle Leandre (brilliant bassist)
- -Looper
- -Rashaan Roland Kirk
- -John Fahey
disappointments/sadnesses
Lester Bowie's departure
David Murray's Duke Ellington big band project
Loren MazzaCane Connors unaccompanied guitar 1979-80 4cd set
Richard Thompson Mock Tudor
Susie Ibarra/William Parker split
Cooper-Moore/William Parker split
The Vision Festival losing the Orensanz Center
2 musicians whose names will remain unknown, but who were miserable to work with
at the brecht forum series, sad because while usually getting to know musicians
just enhances their music, finding out someone's an enormous asshole who's more
interested in insulting someone volunteering to put on a show with them than
letting them speak makes it hard to listen to their excellent music.
bonus book recommendation - The Kid by Dan Savage - if you like reading his
column, this has all the irreverance and humor, but also some surprising
poignancy and brutal honesty, and is really really well written.

I'm almost 100% sure I saw a copy of it in NYC last wek and in Toronto at
the same time. 32 Jazz has a Web presence either itself or through Rhino.
Drop them a note to find out for sure.
