  151. Maranha is a member of Osso Exotico, who I'm not familiar with, but that may 
  152. help some. this disc consists of long dronescapes, created by "piano strings 
  153. excited by four motors and violin". not too far off from the work of Phill 
  154. Niblock, who's one of two people given "very special thanks" in the liner 
  155. notes.

  199. I have to agree that this concert was excellent. The improvisations 
  200. that followed it were also, generally, very good. In fact, porbably 
  201. that having Mr. Reijseger sitting and playing his cello beside me 
  202. during the final improvisation only made the concert better!

  204. Concerning the great records of the year, I don't have much to add that 
  205. was not already mentionned, but can I just say again that I really 
  206. liked, and still like, "Charms of the Night Sky" by Dave Douglas. And 
  207. finally, "Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada", the Godspeed You Black 
  208. Emperor! latest e.p., is, in my opinion, a must have... The concert 
  209. they played in Montreal last september was the best I saw in 1999. It 
  210. was simply amazing.

  246. concur with Simon on the quality of the CORTEX BOMB record, which would be a 
  247. much more enjoyable record for many of the current list members who rather 
  248. don't care for sine waves.  Frankly, it rocks.  Submit to the awesome might 
  249. of CORTEX BOMB.

  287. For those who don't yet know, Dave has signed a contract with RCA, if memory 
  288. serves correct.  He seems to defend the decision (vis a vis the freedom of 
  289. recording for a half dozen small independent labels; that is, the freedom to 
  290. put out four or five releases a year with five or six bands, plus unlimited 
  291. sideman work) based on 1.) exposure, and 2.) it's not a terribly bad deal, 
  292. with an assured minimum of 2 releases a year, plus acquiescence to reissues 
  293. (such as the HatARt reisuue [?] of CONSTELLATIONS).  The first album is due 
  294. (I think) next month, and it's a new sextet record, a tribute to the life 
  295. and work of Mary Lou Williams.  The second record will be theatre music from 
  296. the CHarms group.  Yippee!  The contract binds him for two years.  Perhaps 
  297. after that we can have Old Dave back (says the record lecher in me).

  299. A jazz musician friend in NYC has mentioned that the Sextet has never once 
  300. played a gig together with it's "original" configuration.  In fact, I've 
  301. heard the upcoming Vanguard gigs will be the first time Joey's EVER made the 
  302. gig.  Is this true?

  304. Apparently, also, many of the parts (trumpet, at least) have been played 
  305. almost exclusively from memory, and the Vanguard gigs will be the first time 
  306. Dave ever presented the musicians with definitve scores rendered by a 
  307. copyist.

  365. this is scud's 7" contribution to the gun court singles series off dave
  366. sweetwater's wabana imprint, the same label that released the double elpee
  367. version of the ambush retrospective, "mash the place up". i believe one of
  368. the tracks is a collaboration with shizuo, the other is an unreleased vault
  369. track. it's the best integration of ragga and hardcore i've heard so far. i
  370. sincerely hope this is the scud release you're thinking of, because it
  371. really needs to be heard.

  377. more hardcore (sorry). this is another 7", one side is breaks galore (very
  378. fast) and the flipside has a dark ambient piece that jumps into some
  379. overloading drums n bass. my only quibble is that it's over way too fast,
  380. even for a seven inch. but if anyone's actually reading this, please check
  381. out the dj scud 7", mentioned above, way before this one. also of interest
  382. is de babalon's decent and listenable full-length on digital hardcore
  383. recordings, called "if you're into it, i'm out of it". i just checked
  384. forced exposure, and they deem it "a 1997 classic". whatever, it sounds a
  385. tad bit dated now, but imho, it's (one of?) the best release(s) on dhr,
  386. which isn't saying much i guess.

  388. i should probably mention that with these releases, the hardcore stuff that
  389. people on *this* list could probably still listen to without feeling a bit
  390. silly, are the following: patric c "wreckstep" ep (spite); base force one
  391. "welcome to violence" (praxis), a superb dj pure/christoph fringelli
  392. collaboration; darkstar "darkstar" ep (sub/version), christoph fringelli's
  393. solo project, there's also a version of this with a fennesz mix); and
  394. anything off the south london-based ambush label.

  398. yet another 7". WrK is a japanese label that puts out conceptual stuff. the
  399. idea behind this one was microwaving some contact mics (literally). i'm
  400. sure you can kind of imagine the sound: voice crack-ish static, pomassl-ish
  401. electric drone (all pretty tame). the photo on the sleeve actually shows
  402. the mics in the microwave. (let's just be happy he didn't microwave
  403. anything living).

  407. an awesome collaboration between nomex and dj scud. this one takes the
  408. ragga plus hardcore element and mashes it all up, so there's a lot of stop
  409. and starting, long periods of merzbow-ish noise, feedback, and the jamaican
  410. interjections of "totall destruction, the onlee solusion...". some may find
  411. this a bit unlistenable perhaps; the beats are so harsh that the music
  412. still sounds loud even when i turn the volume way down.

  416. i got this in the mail from some guy living in the middle of nowhere in
  417. massachusetts. one jewel case, 3 cd-rs stuffed to the brim, and beautiful
  418. cover with tree leaves placed in strategic places. the first two discs
  419. sound like oval, circa "systemisch", but more difficult and with strange
  420. static pops and clicks, instead of cd skips. the first half of the last
  421. disc has a less-alienating microstoria feel, but with weird hints at
  422. melodies, warm textures slip sliding everywhere, and what sounds like
  423. sampled guitar. this is beautiful stuff, and the high point of the 3 discs.
  424. the second half kinda switches into IDM mode, with funky electro beats.
  425. there's a ton to digest here, and the sheer volume makes up for the sub par
  426. quality of a few of the tracks. unfortunately, i just learned that he's not
  427. able to send anymore copies out, but most of this material has already been
  428. snatched up by a variety of labels. so just keep an eye out.

  475. BACKGROUND
  476. Joe McPhee is a brilliant improvising musician who plays many instruments,
  477. including saxophones, trumpet, valve trombone, clarinet, piano and sometimes
  478. electronics. He was born in November, 1939 in Miami to a family with strong
  479. ties to sacred and secular musical traditions. As a child, Joe was taught by
  480. his father to play the trumpet and to read music. After a stint in the Army,
  481. Joe came to New York City in the mid-'6O's to share an early collaboration
  482. with the great Clifford Thornton, and Joe also began studying saxophone
  483. during this time. He taught in the Black Studies Department at Vassar
  484. College in upstate New York (and maintains his home in the Hudson Valley to
  485. this day), and then he began a musical career centered in Switzerland that has
  486. continued for more than 2O years. Today, Joe McPhee is held in highest esteem as
  487. a musician throughout Europe, as well as here at home.
  488.  
  489. Joe McPhee's music can be heard on more than 5O recordings, beginning with
  490. Clifford Thornton's "Freedom and Unity" after which Joe began recording
  491. under his own name with "Underground Railroad," "Nation Time," "Black Magic
  492. Man," "Trinity," "Survival Unit II at WBAI's Free Music Store" and "Pieces
  493. of Light" with John Snyder. The early '7O's saw the beginnings of Joe's long
  494. and fruitful association with HatART, a Swiss company Werner Uehlinger
  495. formed with Joe as sole artistic inspiration and focus, specifically to
  496. record and distribute Joe's music; this resulted in 11 consecutive brilliant
  497. Joe McPhee recordings between 1975 and '82. In the subsequent 1O-year
  498. period, Joe issued 1O more releases on other European and Canadian labels
  499. besides HatART (most on CD), including Sackville, CELP, Van d'Oeuvre, In
  500. Situ, Victo, and Mode. And between 1995 and 1997, a dozen sessions saw CD
  501. release on Deep Listening, CIMP, Eighth Day, Music & Arts, Blue Regard, Okka
  502. Disk, and Evidence, with occasional returns to some of the European and
  503. Canadian labels.

  505. Recently, Joe has played with ensembles in New York City (at Carnegie Hall,
  506. Roulette, the Knitting Factory's Bell-Atlantic Festival and the Vision
  507. Festival), Atlanta, Michigan, North Carolina, upstate New York and Europe .
  508. Recently in Chicago, Joe played at Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge, where the
  509. two tenor masters ended the evening in brilliant, unaccompanied improvised
  510. duets.  Also in Chicago, Joe participated in a historic night of duets with
  511. the great drummer Hamid Drake.  Last year at the Knitting Factory, Joe
  512. played a powerful 4-night concert series with his Trio X (Dominic Duval and
  513. Jay Rosen), celebrating one of his heroes each night-- John Coltrane, Albert
  514. Ayler, Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman -- with the final concert
  515. simultaneously cybercast from the Knitting Factory.

  543. Record Outlet for $6.99 (or are they 5.99?) incl the most recent Roscoe
