Me too. I think this is some of his best work, though perhaps I'm not as
"Avant" as some on this list, so I've kept my mouth shut.

I agree, and it's good to hear that I'm not alone. . . Actually, many of
the "Miles-head" musicians I play with love this release as well as many
of the mid to late 1999 EPs.

picked up t-bone walker's imperial recordings 1950-54 after a rave from someone
on the list about his playing. i'm curious if i hit the "right" period, and
forget who the original raver was. please email me, privately unless you can
sort out the relevance-relation (by way of albert collins, perhaps?) and learn
me a little on walker's peaks and valleys. like what i'm hearing so far. thanks.

Subject: 1999
OK, I've been thinking about my favorites for the year, and the problem is
that I tend to be slow about picking things up, so a lot of my purchases in
1999 came out earlier. But I think all of these were released last year.
Mr. Bungle, California. I also got to see them perform this material live,
and it made a big difference to my appreciation (the drunken headbangers
hollering for macaroni have unfortunately ruined my appreciation for the
first album for a while, but c'est la vie).
Chris Cutler, Science Group. If Bungle is too poppy, this is the rock for
you.
Dave Douglas, Charms of the Night Sky. Probably everyone here knows this
sextet album, jazz with a middle eastern flavor to it, chamber jazz but
still challenging sometimes.
Ground Zero, Last Concert. Exhilarating summation of a great band,
covering everything from the tranquillity to the noise, with a great
version of consume.
Bernhard Gunter, For Heike/Slow Gestures. His best work to date, even gets
loud once or twice (!)
Thomas Dimuzio, Headlock. This could be my favorite reissue, as this was
originally released in 1989. Sort of electroacoustic noise, but always
interesting (I probably would have considered this industrial 10 years ago).
Eric La Casa, L'empreinte de l'ivresse. Best soundscape of the year. It
doesn't sound like there's a lot of processing here, but I'm slowly gaining
an appreciation for this kind of music. I also finally tracked down
Francisco Lopez La Selva, his rain forest opus. He includes several pages
of liner notes in a beautiful package, then recommends that you don't read
any of it and take the music as it is.
Thomas Lehn/Gerry Hemingway, Tom and Gerry. Two great cds of
electroacoustic improv brought to us by our own Jon Abbey. Much better
than I expected, with lots of different tone colors, much more than the
label 'synthesizer and drums' might suggest.
Shuttle358, optimal.lp. Classic ambient isn't dead.
John Wall, Constructions 1-4. Wall's music gets better and better with
every release. Again in a cloth-bound cover, extremely detailed and
complex compositions, with more interaction with live musicians than on
previous releases. Nobody sounds like Wall, a unique and wonderful talent.
Novel of the year (hey, someone else included reading material): Neal
Stephenson, Cryptonomicon. Although you'll find this in the science
fiction section, there's little scifi in it. Two parallel stories between
WWII in the Philippines, and the present.
Honorable mention: Ivo Andric, Bridge on the Drina. Nobel literature
winner from 1961, the story of a bridge over four centuries. More
enlightening about Yugoslavia than hundreds of tv news stories.
Non-fiction: Michel Foucault, Discipline and Punish. Don't know why I
didn't read this sooner, but his analysis of power relations still seems
right on.
Honorable mention: George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia. Orwell went to
Spain to fight with the anarchists in 1937, and this memoir is not only
about his travels, but the disappearance of truth in war and discussions of
politics that were very relevant with the US (mis)adventures in eastern
Europe this past summer.
A special thanks to all the list members who have introduced me to some
great music this year.

I am seriously looking for a copy of that
HyperBeatles. Apparently Anomalous Records sold all
their copies to Other Music, who turned around and
sold them all to who knows who. If anyone has a copy
they wouldn't mind parting with, please let me know.
If you would mind parting with it, maybe I could
borrow a dub until I get my hands on the real thing?
Along the same lines, does anyone have a copy of
Nicolas Collins' 100 of the World's Most Beautiful
Melodies? It's a great disc with all kinds of guest
stars, including Zorn, Parkins, Neill and others. If
you are willing to part with it, please let me know.
Thanks!
Peter

preferential order):
World Saxophone Quartet - M'Bizo
Arto Lindsay - Prize
Vinicius Cantuaria - Tucuma
Randy Newman - Bad Love
Cecil Taylor - Melancholy
Basement Jaxx - Remedy
Pavement - Terror Twilight (hated it at first, but it grew on me in a huge
way)
Hamiet Blueitt/DD Jackson/Mor Thiam - Join Us
Moby - Play
Tom Waits - Mule Variations
Tricky - Juxtapose
A bit more poppy than is the norm for this list, I understand, but still it's
what floated my boat. Honorable mentions go to Pet Shop Boys, the Donnas,
