  64. i was very lucky to go to this festival in amsterdam a couple of years ago
  65. where they showed a couple of movies zorn wrote the score form. the black
  66. glove was one of them. great suspense, nice camera work, a lot of leather
  67. and wax. the audience held its breath collectively... i'm thinking about
  68. ordering it.

  158. A while back I solicited some recommendations for 
  159. Derek Bailey solo cds from members of the Zorn-list.
  160. That proved a very useful thing to do.

  162. I have found "Drop me off at 96th", "Public & Domestic Pieces", 
  163. "Fairly early with Postscripts", "Solo Guitar vol. 1",
  164. "solo guitar vol. 2", and "Takes, fakes, and dead she dances"
  165. all to be delightful.  I like the nonidiomatic improv, the 
  166. straight pieces, the spoken word pieces, all of it.
  167.  
  168. A couple questions.
  169.  
  170. (1) Are there other recommended solo albums out there and still 
  171. easily available?
  172. What about "Lace" on EMANEM?  Any comments?
  173. What about "Incus Taps" on ORGAN OF CORTI?
  174.  
  175. (2)  I am less impressed by Derek Bailey's collaborations.
  176. I have heard him with Zorn (Yankees), Keiji Haino, 
  177. RUINS, Min Xiao Fen, and "Sign of Four" and none of them really bowled me
  178. over.
  179. I do however like Harras and I like the two things I have heard with Bailey
  180. and Min Tanaka.
  181. There are a ton of other collaborations out there and available.
  182. Does anybody have suggestions for Bailey collaborations that really stand out?
  183.  
  184. (3)  Has anybody heard the Joseph Holbrooke ep?  What's it sound like?

  313. and difference tones, I just figured that, this being the zorn-list, and
  314. not, say, the psycho-acoustic-effects-discussed-by-uptight-assholes list,
  315. that for the sake of brevity I could refer to what Sharp was doing as
  316. difference tones. What he was doing was this: with guitar, an ebow, a slide
  317. and a delay, he was playing sustained extremely high-pitched
  318. micro-intervals, creating low pitched difference tones, at extremely high
  319. volume, that caused my girlfriend, who *IS* a fan of his music, to have to
  320. leave the room quickly because it caused her extreme physical discomfort.

  395. I think 'Incus Taps' is pretty incredible. Lots of
  396. electric guitar and one of the best solo Bailey CDs.
  397. 'Lace' is an all-acoustic live show (from '89, I
  398. believe) with pretty long tracks. I think it's good,
  399. but not essential.
  400.  
  401. One that I would highly recommend is 'Aida' which was
  402. re-issued onto CD by Dexter's Cigar. All acoustic and
  403. maybe my all-time favorite solo Bailey, though perhaps
  404. I'm biased since it was the first one I ever heard.

  412. Yeah, those didn't do much for me either.

  414. Off-hand, ones that I would recommend are 'Village
  415. Life' with Louis Moholo and Thebe Lipere, 'Soho
  416. Suites' with Tony Oxley, and 'Figuring' with Barre
  417. Phillips. I'm sure there are some others...
  418.  
  419. Also, if you can track it down, Bailey's duo LP with
  420. Dave Holland on ECM is really great as well.

  479. Firstly, you've got most of the really important stuff.  "Drop Me Off..." is
  480. simply one of my favorite DB discs of all, and the Incus and Emanem solo material
  481. is vital.
  482.  
  483. Beyond those, I echo Tom Pratt's sentiments - "Incus Taps" is a valuable showcase
  484. of Derek's pithy early work (as is "Improvisation" on the Cramps label), and
  485. "Lace" is a more subdued (though very lovely) acoustic solo concert that many view
  486. as amongst Derek's best recent work.  Further, though he somewhat qualified his
  487. recommendation of it, the reissue of "Aida" on Dexter's Cigar is as good as Tom
  488. says it is (and I heard lots of other Bailey before I heard "Aida" so I'm hardly
  489. swayed by nostalgia).  What's more, you should grab it if you see it if only
  490. because Dexter's Cigar is already defunct.

  496. Anything with Evan Parker should be grabbed.  "Arch Duo" on Rastascan is the only
  497. easily attainable example, so get it quick.  But if you ever spot any of their
  498. Incus vinyl collaborations, those should be considered no-brainers ("The London
  499. Concert" was the first I heard of either of them, and I'm still coming back for
  500. more...).  And if you ever chance upon a copy of "The Topography of the Lungs" by
  501. Bailey, Parker and Bennink, well, do whatever you have to do...
  502.  
  503. The duo with Cecil Taylor is fascinating for devotees of either or both, but does
  504. not feature the strongest example of either.  The same could be said for the
  505. collaborations with Braxton.
  506.  
  507. I'm especially fond of "Dart Drug," the duet with percussionist Jamie Muir (ex of
  508. Music Improvisation Company and King Crimson).  "Village Life" with Moholo and
  509. Lipere has been roundly panned by many, but, like Tom, it's a favorite of mine.
  510. So is the disc with Barre Phillips, "Figuring," which Tom also mentioned.  (For a
  511. self-proclaimed Bailey newcomer, Tom's really caught on rather quickly...)  :-)
  512.  
  513. More recently, I love the new "Daedal" with Susie Ibarra... but then, I simply
  514. love Susie Ibarra.  Apparently, judging from a brief conversation I had with Derek
  515. after the first time he played with Susie, so does he.
  516.  
  517. And I'm frankly quite amazed that no one's yet mentioned any of the duets with Han
  518. Bennink ("Live at Verity's" on Organ of Corti, "Han" and the two new "Air Mail
  519. Special" volumes on Incus, just to name the CDs).  This relationship is as special
  520. as the Bailey/Parker connection - two incredibly strong and odd egos and senses of
  521. humor intersecting in the most remarkable ways.

  525. Not yet, but eventually.  But if you're interested in really early Bailey, you
  526. could do worse than to check out "Karyobin" by the Spontaneous Music Ensemble,
  527. which is amongst Bailey's earliest completely free performances on disc.

  546. woo, i just want to second steve smith's recommendation for this one. one
  547. of my favorites. 
  548. you should probably be warned, tho, that (i'd say) it's a bit
  549. uncharacteristic sounding for bailey. 
  550. it's mood-inducing with very dark ("dark drug") metallic noises everywhere,
  551. and kinda psychedelic 
  552. at some points in an atmospheric way. most of the time, i have trouble
  553. picking out what bailey is doing 
  554. or if he is playing at all. the improvs are long and strecthed out. i
  555. haven't listened to this in years but if i remember correctly, bailey lets
  556. muir really do his thing. dont play this stuff for yr patients if yr a mental 
  557. health care professnal. ;)

  559. a few years ago muir popped up on some psych piano label disc with some ppl
  560. (hmm, was it david cunningham and 
  561. who else?). the pan sonic w/ collaborators disc on piano completely escaped
  562. me. i can't find it anywhere

  583. some personal faves that haven't yet been mentioned:

  585. Derek/John Stevens-Playing (Incus)-from 1992, with some great mini-trumpet 
  586. work by Stevens on a few tracks, in addition to his normal superb percussion.
  587.  
  588. Derek/Min Tanaka (Revenant)-from 1980, Tanaka is a dancer, and in addition, 
  589. you can hear the rain pounding on the roof while the record was being made. 
  590. great rainy-day record.
  591.  
  592. Derek/Various-Playing (Bingo)-released in early 1999, this is made up of 
  593. various duos, many of which are beat-driven. vastly superior to the Guitar, 
  594. Drums and Bass Avant CD. my favorite tracks are the ones with Darryl Moore 
  595. (also known as D., collaborates with To Rococo Rot) and Sasha Frere-Jones 
  596. (bassist from Ui, occasional Wire writer, and the guy who runs Bingo). one of 
  597. my favorite CDs of 1999.

  630. Derek Bailey/Dj Ninj collaboration "Guitars, Drums and Bass", and I have the
  631. Medeski Martin & Wood Remix EP "Bubblehouse" where Zorn plays, but that's
  632. basically it.  If anyone can help me, I'd be very glad.

  657. I'm pretty certain 'The London Concert' is still in
  658. print, actually. I know one of the Bailey/Parker Incus
  659. LPs is and I don't think it's 'Compatibles'.

  665. Oh, absolutely. I finally got to hear this a month or
  666. so ago and was pretty amazed.

  668. I'll happily second 'Dart Drug' and the two recent
  669. Bennink duos (I wasn't crazy about 'Han' or the one on
  670. Organ of Corti). Something I forgot about... The two
  671. 'Quintessence' discs by the Spontaneous Music Ensemble
  672. are pretty key, I think. The first in particular is
  673. one of my favorite improv CDs of all time.
