i only know deane from a fmp title with butch morris, and this has a very
morris-like vibe to it as well. if anone can provide me with info on him, i'd

I'm sure others can provide more definitive details, but...The Outpost is a
performance space located in Albequerque, NM. The director there is
multi-reedist Tom Guralnick. The Outpost books an impressive array of
performances, given its location. JA Deane is a trombonist and live
electronics artist who has performed at the Outpost many times, in addition
to being a member of many of Butch Morris' conductions.
The Outpost has a website at: http://www.swcp.com/~ramirgur/index.html
Another NM artist who has performed at the Outpost is the amazing guitarist
Stefan Dill, whose informative site you can visit at: http://www.norumba.com/

Finally, this artist has a spotlight on the zornlist again. It is a shame
that he isn't mentioned more often on this list, although other musique
concrete composers appear on a regular basis.
Where to start? Pages from the book is a very good start. If you like this
more ambient side of Aube, other interesting releases are:
- -108 (label:old europe cafe). The sound source here are bells, believe me, a
very fine release. Very calm, new age style music.
- -Embers (label:ant-zen). Here, the music is based on the sound of fire. The
result is a soft grooving type of sound.
- -Shade-away (label:art-ic culture). Nothing but sounds made of glass. Aube
made other releases based on the sound of glass (see for example the album
'flare' on the irislight label), but they were very harsh noise. This album
has a more dark ambient touch. yes, you hear the sound of shattered glass,
but he uses controlled feedback.
- -Ricochetentrance (label:lunar). Same as above, aube made several albums
based on water (for example 'flush' on the irislight label or 'aqua
syndrome' on the manifold label) but this is more laid back: little drops, a
drone, etc.
These albums here above are in the same style as 'bible pages', so you
should like these as well.
If you want a good introduction on his more noise style type of recordings,
you should get 'substructural penetration (1991-1995)' on the irislight
label. As it says, this double cd is a sort of best of. The tracks have
different sound sources, so it is quite varied.
But hey, let's not forget that aube is also a record producer and a label
owner. The GROSS label recently put out a four cd cassette box that feature
artists that released stuff on this label, sometimes remixed by Aube.
Last but not least: if you have the chance to see aube live, please do so.
In this way you have a great opportunity to see how his albums are made.
Anyway, I hope that my info is some help to you. I tell you now allready
that most of his releases have a very limited run (500 copies is not an
exception) and are no longer in print. But if you are looking for something,
let me know, maybe we could set up a trade. Just like Vince "manifold", I
collect everything from this artist.
Best wishes

Actually, 1 degree, as Deane was involved with some of JZ's

JA Deane has been involved in several conductions by Butch Morris,
some of them on the Testament 10 CD.
He was part of a band called Indoor Life (Celluloid LP in 1981).
I learnt to know him then (weird, austere-looking trombone baldhead
in a weird new wave band), before even knowing anything about improv.
Haven't dared relistening to it though

Hi,
Just a brief note to let all y'all know that this week on Mappings
I've got a show featuring more than an hour of music by
composer/instrument maker/microtonal theorist/curmudgeon Harry
Partch, not entirely unrelated to what we discuss here. You'll hear
The Letter, Ulysses at the Edge, Barstow, Windsong, the Dreamer that
Remains, and more.
the show is available throughout the week at
<http://www.antennaradio.com/avant/mappings/index.htm>. Note too
that there are now several other shows at Antenna that feature music
you may find relevant: Le Vide, Attacca, Intoxication Hour and more,
all accessible through the link to other shows from the page above.
Bests,

Subject: help with NORWEGIAN WOOD
I was reading a bio of The Beatles (an English band) in which the
author (Allan Kozinn) mentions Aki Takahashi, famous interpret of avant
classical music who commissioned Beatles covers to modern composers. According
to the biographer, there were compositions by John Cage and Frederic Rzewski!
As far as I know, this is the only trace of this project that I am
aware of:
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** - NORWEGIAN WOOD - HYPER MUSIC FROM LENNON & McCARTNEY: Aki Takahashi
This record features arrangements/recompositions of Beatles songs by Pauline
Oliveros, Guy Klucevsek, Per Norgard, Shin-Ichiro Ikebe, Alvin Curran, Sukhi
Kang, Mamoru Fujieda, Alvin Lucier, Tan Dun, Ayuo Takahashi, Yvar
Mikhashoff, Terry Riley, Walter Zimmerman.
Aki Takahashi: piano.
1991 - Eastworld/Toshiba/EMI (Japan), TOCE-8023 (CD)

Does anybody know if there was another record with the Cage and
Rzewski pieces?
Thanks,

From the most recent anomalous update:
* "Hyper Beatles" CD $20.99 EMI approached
pianist Aki Takahashi to record renditions of Beatles songs, and she
in turn got various experimental composers from the United States and
Japan to make arrangements of these songs. so, we now have the
Beatles as re-seen through Raphael Mostel, Haruna Miyake, Alvin
Curran, Kentaro Hanedo, John Cage, Barbara Monk-Feldman, Yoriaki
Matsudaira, Carl Stone, Akira Inoue, Peter Garland, and Frederic
Rzewski. the 1990 CD is now out of print and taken some difficulty
to unearth a few of. EMI Records Limited England 7 54155 2
