Mostly, I'm hoping it will keep them IN business, by
passing the word. I had heard Blonde Redhead was
great, but still, I'm not buying until I can hear it.
Downloaded the entire new album on MP3, fell in love.
Went out and bought it and the previous one.
Fantastic! The new Trans Am, heard they were great,
but still not buying. Downloaded the album, BAM, they
had a sale. Ben Folds, downloaded one, two, five,
eight songs and finally thought I gotta get these
albums. Boom, I own all four (plus concert tix) and
they have a fan they would have NEVER reached on the
strength of one low-ranking, not very strong top 40
hit.
Really, I hardly ever buy albums without hearing them
first, and when I do, I'm generally disappointed.
And here's the weird thing. I would feel very
uncomfortable duplicating a CD for someone. But I'd
easily tape two albums for them to listen to, or drop
ten albums to CD-ROM as mp3s. WhY? I think because I
view tapes and mp3s as intermediate media. A
temporary thing, of sorts. Whereas, somehow, a CD
burn makes me more uncomfortable. Similarly, I don't
burn whole albums off tape or MP3 to CD, because I
feel that, if I want it that bad, I oughta go out and
buy it.
Well, with one exception. I burned copies of two
bootlegs, but hey...
I also make mixes for people, again, because I enjoy
spreading the music, having them think suddenly, WOW!
Pigpen sounds great! I gotta go hear more of that!
Is the artist really losing money because I put a song
of theirs on a mix? Is it possible that my friend
would have been browsing the local Camelot and run
across a Pigpen album and thought, Hmmm, I think I
might pay 16 dollars for this and listen.
I doubt it.
So, I really hope I'm helping the artist when I make
mixes or post MP3s. Get the word out to the public.
That's my goal, really. And to make people happy and
excited about different types of music than
traditional commercial fodder.
Peter

Ok, we got four zornlist/napster members so far. I guess the rest isn't
interested in sharing Zorn related MP3's. These are the user names of those
who hang around in the Jazz channel regularly:
* zorn_007
* zorn_108
* MattOrange
* bscd
The biggest problem is indeed that Napster's servers aren't interconnected.
It is therefore hard to locate one another. When they fix this and when more
zorn listers get involved I will inform the list. Send me a private email:
rob@charity.nu
Please join too!
(in reference to)
JazZorns,
Maybe some of you have heard about http://www.napster.com. This program
enables users to connect with other users' local mp3 directories (from
computer to computer in other words). Plus there's the possibility to chat.
I believe this is a wonderful tool for Zornlisters. As for me, I'm always
curious to hear one or two tracks from, let's say, Taboo and Exile, before I
buy the CD. Well, it is now possible for all listers to share one or two
tracks from their new CD's so others can find out whether they like it too
without having to upload them to a server first. I'm not talking about full
albums, just one or two tracks per album. True music lovers still buy albums
:-)
As long as the group "Avant Garde" isn't available with Napster, I'd suggest
we populate the "Jazz" group. You will be asked to choose a user name. Pick
something like "zorn_025". This will help identifying the zornlisters! Don't
worry if all your MP3's aren't AG, just make sure you have something that
could interest most of us ;-) Oh yeah, since all Napster's servers aren't
fully connected, it is possible that users who are both connected to Napster
at the same time will not be able to see each other. They're working on
that.
To give all members of this list an idea of how many people are joining
Napster, please email me privately announcing you joined napster. I will
post the results later.
To me the best part of the Zorn list is to get to know more about new
releases. That's why I urge people to benefit from this new tool. Looking
forward to seeing some Zorn related music on this overly poppy
www.napster.com
Join 'em!

Just a piece of promotion to let you all know that Sephardic Tinge, the trio
of Anthony Coleman - Piano, Ben Street - Bass, and Michael Sarin - Drums,
will be playing at Tonic, 107 Norfolk Street between Delancey & Rivington, on
Thurs. Dec. 23rd on a double bill with Marc Ribot - solo guitar. Concert
starts at 8 PM, tickets are $10. For more info, call Tonic at 212-358-7501
Sephardic Tinge
"If you can't manage to put tinges of Spanish into your tunes, you will never
be able to get the right seasoning for jazz." - Jelly Roll Morton
The Spanish Tinge plus the Jewish Tinge equals the Sephardic Tinge - right?
With a repertoire consisting of Anthony Coleman's original compositions,
traditional Judeo - Hispanic music, and Latin - tinged Jazz classics, this
trio keeps pushing boundaries and creating connections. Recently returned
from a European tour which included performances at the Sarajevo Jazzfest and
the Vienna Jewish Culture Weeks, this is Sephardic Tinge's only NY concert
this season.

Hi
Just to let you know that a few months ago, "les disques du crepuscule"
released a "best of" Wim Mertens.
The disc features a broad aspect of his work: his solo piano work (most of
them soumdtracks), but also his more symphonic work and -yes indeed- one
track that features his guitar playing (as far as I know, only one album
with guitar music was released).
However, don't know if this album is released outside europe.
Best wishes

Long, nicely written Jelly Roll Morton piece by Howard Reich and William Gaines
(Chicago Tribune) available for the asking. Just ask me.
Also, just picked up Briggan Krauss' Descending to End. Really nice solo,
multitracked sax'n'effects. I've not been crazy about what recordings I've heard
of his, but picked this up curious to see if it was the naked solo. It's not,
but it's really good. What do folks think of this compared to his other discs.

Just writing to let folks know that Son Boy Records
has re-issued 'A Black Mass' by Amiri Baraka and Sun
Ra & The Myth-Science Arkestra. I was pretty busy when
I heard it today so I can't say too much except that
it's some sort of bizarre play. It's nice to see this
ultra-rare LP hit the CD format so we can all actually
hear it! For the time being, though, the only stores I
know of that will have this are in NYC: Other Music
and a store uptown (can't remember the name). The
folks who run Son Boy apparently aren't dealing with
distributers, but these stores got the hook-up.
According to the notes on the back of the disc, Son
Boy plans on re-issuing the entire Jihad catalog
(anyone know what else is there aside from the Sonny
Murray record?) and unreleased material including a
session feauring Pharoah Sanders and Albert Ayler.
Thought that might interest some...

There were 3 lps: #663 ("Sonny's Time Now"), #1968 ("Black Mass"), and
#1001 ("Black and Beautiful Soul & Madness" by Leroi Jones) -- and a
single from #1001 ... apparently Jones recorded "much more" than was
issued. An extensive dig into those tapes would be some kinda wholly
grail enterprise tho I imagine that rights clearance would keep the flow
down to a trickle.

What is Son Boy BTW? A Japanese label. And if so, how much will these
Jihads cost? Considering the tos-and-fros from everyone's estates and
relatives it may be a while before we see any more Ayler et. al.
Furthermore wasn't "Sunny's Tiem Now" supposed to be reissued by DIW?

actually, I only looked at the label in the store for a minute yesterday, but

Subject: chris cutler's science group
Way back in my salad days, I picked up the first Henry Cow album, LegEnd,
simply because it was on the same label as Mike Oldfield and Tangerine
Dream. I was rapidly hooked on their complex rock music, which I later
discovered was in a named genre all of its own -- RIO Music. As I followed
Cutler's musical adventure with Recommended distribution, I grew more
impressed with not only his musical skills, but his novel distribution
method of funding new releases by subscription. His music has remained
committed, complex, challenging, in a way that few others of his generation
have done.
All of this by way of introduction to his latest 'song' release, the
Science Group. I listened to this for the first time this morning, and it
really took me back, recalling all of the wonderful projects with which
he's been involved, and I sort of wondered why he doesn't get the attention
showered on JZ or Bill Laswell. Part of it is that he's involved with
fewer releases, but I think part too is because his music is consistently
more challenging than most of Zorn and Laswell's recent work (as discussed
in the recent thread here about the avantgarde-ness of Tzadik).
Be that as it may, Science Group is a tremendous addition to Cutler's
recent song-oriented efforts, following Domestic Stories (1992) and (EC)
Nudes (1994). His co-conspirators this time include Stevan Tickmayer and
Bob Drake (many different instruments each), with Fred Frith and Amy Denio
doing guitar and vocal work. Claudio Puntin's presence on clarinets
reminded me strongly of Lindsay Cooper's work with Henry Cow, and
undoubtedly contributed to the sense of continuity I experienced listening
to this release. Denio's vocals are superb. She sings in a non-tremolo
tone that recalled Suzanne Lewis's work with Thinking Plague (another Drake
project). Cutler plays drums and electronics, and he does both with
complete authority.
The style of music on this release is vast. The opening chaos changes
direction as rapidly as Naked City (although few of the interludes come
from recognizable musical styles, the way it does in NC). Tickmayer and
Drake double each other on bass and keyboards, with complex, but
hard-hitting melodies. Sometimes it even briefly sounds like a slightly
demented Yes (with Denio's vocals doing Jon Anderson's duty), but before
long it growls and explodes into something new and unrecognizable. This is
a fabulous album.

One of America=92s true maverick composers, a friend of Partch, Nancarrow, C=

Ayuo (whose name translates as Fish-Light) is one of the most enigmatic=20
