what masses?
98% of all people I work with have no idea who Sonic
Youth are, and probably don't care.

Sonic Youth happened to notice them.

I recently go Haino Keiji's 1998 AVANT release An Unclear Trial: More
Than This with Joey Baron and Greg Cohen.  Needless to say I was quite
impressed.  I was wondering if anyone on the mailing list could
reccomend some other releases of his.  Does anyone have any live
recordings?  If so I'll send you a link to my trading pages.

report).

I went back to my recently-acquired back issues of Coda.  There was a
profile of Hemphill in the January-February 1995 issue (Coda 259).  In
it, Hemphill referred to a letter written by the other three members of
the WSQ in 1989 in which they listed a number of grievances, all of
which seemed quite petty (Hemphill had complained to Nonesuch records
about being booked economy class on a flight to Europe, and the others
apparently didn't like his rocking the boat in this way) or made up
(Hemphill being asked to teach at Columbia--he wasn't; a double booking
for the New Music America program that sounds like a classic case of
miscommunication).  He also alluded to personality conflicts, ego
issues, which he did not specify.  No mention of homophobia.  Not
surprisingly, as this is an issue almost never talked about in the jazz
press.

Didn't Julius Hemphill live with a piano player who was a woman? Ursula
something? It's possible that they were roommates, but I had always figured
they were a couple. I believe the other 3 members at the time of WSQ have
all been married at least once, so I'm having a hard time figuring how
homophobia could play into this at all (unless theres more than meets the
eye).

I remember the complaints as described below. Seemed pretty odd to me,
especially since Hemphill tended to write the best (and most) material for
the group.

Your best bet is to see the website set up by our friend Dave Keffer:

It has pretty much the definitive discography of his works, plus a lot more
information about the man.  My personal favorites of his solo works are "I
Said, This is the Son of Nihilism" and "A Challenge to Fate", although it's
hard to narrow it down from such a diverse and extensive body of work.

Hi

Just listening to the newest relaese by derek bailey and susie ibarra.
Great performance: Bailey is in great shape on electric guitar.
I don't have any other records that feature Ibarra, but she is a very good
partner for dereks' music. She doesn't just follow his style but goes beyond
and sometimes even takes the lead.

The cd says that this recording is the performance at roulette the 27th
november.

Don't know if this cd is out in US, but europeans can order this cd for 12
pounds (including p and p) from Karen Brookman from incus records

Subject: Robin Holcomb

Saw Ms. Holcomb in an extraordinarily beautiful performance at Roulette
last night, just herself on voice and piano. She opened with her lovely
song, "Larks, They Crazy" and included a number of pieces from her
Elektra releases, generally hushed and melancholy, with a poignantly
quavering voice that reminds codgers like myself of Melanie, though with
lyrics far more intelligent, incisive and sad. imho, her best work in
song form ("So Straight and Slow", "The Graveyard Song", "Deliver Me",
"The Window") stand head and shoulders above any other would-be serious
song stylists working the outer fringes or folk. She has the wonderful
ability to perfectly evoke rural America, neither satirically or
sentimentally, in single lines like, "A deer struck down by a car brings
two cows in trade". Her solo piano works are similarly gorgeous and
heart-rending, blending traditional US folk themes with a Barberesue
sense of harmony and the occasional Monkish rhythms. She closed with two
Stephen Foster songs, adapted slightly to her taste (including "My Old
Dog Tray"), injecting a strong bittersweet quality into the corn;
hopefully these see the light of day on disc. One of the finest, deepest
shows I've seen in a long time.

As attractive as I find this approach to song form, I'm always very
leery about taking chances in the store with artists who seem to be
exploring similar territory, that of the ultra-personal,
melancholy-though-not-despondent folk-oriented song form (!). Aside from
Holcomb, I'm thinking of things like the first Roches album, Julie
Tippett's "Sunset Glow", Fahey's work, perhaps even the Incredible
String Band's  "Changing Horses" etc. The chances for disappointment
(ie, a tinge of striving for radio play, an exaggerated sense of
self-importance, etc.) seem too high. Any recommendations on this
hazily-defined genre would be appreciated.

thought he was too confrontational and uppity. He seems to have demanded
more from the record comnpany in terms of promotion and advances, more
first class travel arrangements and the like. Homophobia is news to me.

Plus there's one copy left of the 4 cd Braxton set for $32, and the 4 disc
"For Philip Guston" is $19.99.

I'm sure that all of these are easily worth $5, but are there any
essentials listed above?

ellis did the soundtrack to the "french connection" film, which was quite
good.  i kinda have a fondness for his "electric bath" album, & even his
"live at filmore" thing, although there's a fair amount of cheesiness to be
found in both.  it's funny, on the new cd re-issue of the 'electric bath'
album, it makes a comparison to the mothers of invention - and actually, one
member of ellis' band later went on to join zappa, drummer ralph humphries.

Gave 'em a call on their toll-free line (800-684-3480), and they said that
they would do mail-order with these discs too, though the guy I talked to had
no list of CDs that he could immediately send, only stating that they had "a
ton of them."  Those interested can send CC orders/requests to
