Yes, he's the Screwgun guy. He has also done a lot of work for JMT
and now Winter and Winter. I have also seen some of his work on New
World Records (which seems to be some kind of federally funded
effort). He also was the art director for the Beastie Boys' License
To Ill, the one with the crumpled jet on the cover.

Hey I don't care what Reed thought of Metal Machine Music personally, but he
succeeded in making a revolutionary album of the most beautiful noise,
filled with a spirit and groove not seen in countless other crappo noise
discs since. He never sought to depersonalise the disc with any
abstractions, thus including his image and words on a sleeve which is a
classic of the era in rock. Though the record has inspired many it is best
"used" to blow out accumulated bile in private, just one side at a time. B
is my favourite. The CD version has lost all the dynamic of the vinyl.
Avoid it. And by the way I hate Lou Reed bar VU and only the odd cut since.

Subject: Hat Art Cobra Liner Notes
Hi, I have a request. Does anyone know of anywhere online where I can view the
liner notes to the HatArt release of Cobra? I am writing a paper, and although
I have a pretty good description of Zorn's game pieces, I just want to make sure
I'm not missing anything. If anyone could help me out here (e.g. send the liner
notes in e-mail form offlist), I would be delighted. Thanks,
Concerning Part, I would reccomend "Passio," or perhaps "Fratres" or "Tabula
rasa." "Confusion is Sex" by Sonic Youth is a really scary album, and while
many people would consider it primitive and not as fully developed as their
later work, I still think it is one of their best efforts in terms of creating a
certain mood.
By the way, did anyone catch the Japanese New Music Festival with the Ruins? I
also heard something about a three day stint they did in New York accompanied by
dancers (!?). If anyone knows more about this, I'd love to hear it.

He's also really flexible and diverse - the Screwgun house style is but one of
his facets, the JMT stuff is another. And he also did the famous plane crash
cover for the Beastie Boys' 'License to Ill.' And the art he's done for RCA's
upcoming Dave Douglas release, on the other hand, is classic and noir-ish.
Byram's the man.

I don't know the circumstances surrounding Hemphill leaving the WSQ, but if
you're saying that Hemphill died while still a member of the WSQ, that's not
true. he left sometime between 1988 and 1990, and he died in 1995.

Don Ellis played trumpet and was a member in Charles Mingus┤ Bands in 1959
(MINGUS DYNASTY, NOSTALGIA IN TIMES SQUARE) and in the beginning of the
sixties in George Russell┤s Sextet (EZZ-THETICS, THE OUTER VIEW). His own
recordings are quite interesting and really progressive at that time. I can
recommend NEW IDEAS from 1960 and LIVE AT MONTEREY from 1966.

Bobby Previte uses a piece of Tchaikovsky ("The Countess' Bedroom" from the
opera "The Queen Of Spades") on "Too Close To The Pole". Does anyone happen
to know where this part comes in the opera (what scene?) because I have
access to the opera as a 6-record set with Russian liner notes, and
although listening through it all may be good musical experience, I would
prefer for the moment to simply hear the piece that inspired Bobby's

I'm reading the book now, and loving it -- it may be the best
jazz-related book I've ever read, certainly the best jazz-related
fiction. (For those inspired to look it up, it's Rafi Zabor, not Ravi.)
I haven't gotten to the point where the bear has a teacher, but
Julius is mentioned in the plot by name around page 190. (The book's
characters involve a lot of real musicians, including the Art Ensemble
of Chicago (in a hilarious jailbreak sequence and elsewhere), Charlie
Haden, Billy Hart, Steve McCall, and others. And there are a lot of
thinly disguised people, such as Manfred Eicher of ECM becoming
Sigbjorn Kieger of BFD :-)
Any one on this list who hasn't read this book has got some explainin'
and shoppin' to do *grin*

Sounds like your friend has two different people mixed up. Is he=20
referring to *Don Ellis*, the trumpeter? He played with Mingus, George=20
Russell etc. in NYC, before he moved to Los Angeles and formed a big=20
band, best known for playing in odd time signatures and recorded for=20
Pacific Jazz and Columbia.
Do a net search and you're sure to find bio and musical info. I didn't=20

He's not talking about *Don Elliot" is he? He was an even-more-obscure=20
New York-based vibist, bongo, mellophone and trumpet-player, who had a=20
novelty hit with the Nutty Squirrels in the late 1950s. He played with=20
Terry Gibbs, George Shearing and did music for Broadway shows before=20

I second this, not being a musician, but listening a lot, it is great to
get inside a sax weiding bear's head while playing. I think that rafi
[sorry about the misspell] does an amazing job of describing the thought
process one would go thru while playing a solo and amazing revalations and
impressions therein.
Joe, wait till you get to the end, the last concert the bear plays with his
touring band [all fictional??] at the brooklyn anchorage. A wonderful
written exploration thru abstract realms while improvizing.
Tim Berne is mentioned in relation to Julius towards the beginning.
A must read historically and artistically.
