tabula rasa was my introduction and i think it has way more variety
and depth than the recordings that followed. and i'm partial to
pieces involving many cellos. if you're into vocal churchy music,
then i would highly recommend te deum, which also works quite well for
meditation purposes. i think te deum is the recording that made it
possible for me to get my phd.

hello zornlist,
i have to do a report on 3 modern illustrators for a graphic design
course that i am enrolled in. i was wondering if anyone could help me out
with finding some info on ikue mori's design work, like the covers she does
for Tzadik...? all i am finding on the net is about her music. i'd really
like to incorperate her into the paper, but i don't know if that will be
possible unless i find a great deal more of this sort of information...
would it be a good idea to contact Tzadik via email as well?
well, if anyone has any links or anything, i'd really apreciate it.
thanks in advance..
p.s. i'm also hoping to cover Winston Smith, who did many cover designs for
the Dead Kennedys and other AT artists & t-shirts, etc... anyone have any
info on him either? i've found some, but i'm guessing the majority could
only be found in one of the books AT is selling, which i have neither the
money for right now, or the time to wait for shipping..

haven't heard dirty or washing machine. of those that i have heard (all
of the except those two, i think) i prefer:
All the SYR ep's (1-4), and i also like the 'silver sessions' ep that
someone else on the list didn't care for too much - although i agree that
it has sort of a superfluous feel (the entire ep consists of waves of
feedback, with some really low level distorted crappy drum machine on
parts - creates a nice drone). Proceeds (or part of them) go to suicide
prevention (the suicide of a fan prompted its release, i gather from the
liner notes).
from the 'good old days': evol, sister, and daydream nation - if i had to
pick one, i'd have to pick daydream nation (unless i was trying to be cool
;) by picking one that isn't so widely considered to be their landmark
album, evol (on vinyl - there's a great 'infinte skip' at the end of side
two that you don't get on the cd - or is that on the end of sister? i'm
pretty sure its evol...)
anyway, a thousand leaves renewed my faith in the major label sonic youth
releases. a really strong album.
my 2 cents,
whit

I wouldn't call all of the SYR CDs EPs though. SYR 4 (Goodbye 20th
Century) is a 2 CD set. I also like the SKR 1 (Silver Sessions).
SKR is Sonic Knuth Records, for the person, Jason Knuth, who
committed suicide.
>from the 'good old days': evol, sister, and daydream nation
I have only recently gotten into Sonic Youth (thanks to Whit) and I
haven't heard too much of anything early except for Daydream Nation,
which is great.

"A Thousand Leaves" is really great. You can hear elements of the
SYR EPs on the record. In fact some of the songs are tracks from the
EPs with vocals and other parts. The EPs tend to be long and noisy
with little to no vocals. There is some vocal from Kim Gordon on
parts. I have also heard some live SY from 1998 and I think that
it's very good. I like to hear their avant tendencies play out in
more of a "song" format. Which is like "A Thousand Leaves."

ikue mori is not the designer for Tzadik. The designer is a japanese woman,
her name escapes me, look on the first naked city album, her name is
printed there. I searched the web for some info on her but all I came up
with was some scans of the naked city artwork.

If you'll look inside many of Zorn's CDs released on Tzadik, you'll
find that Ikue Mori is indeed the designer. Circle Maker is one that
comes to mind immediately, but I know a lot of what he (as opposed to
other artists on the label) has released includes her artwork.

Although Ikue is not the graphic designer for *ALL* Tzadik releases, she
is the one for the vast majority of them (unless the credit should read as
"executive designer" :-).
The woman you are talking about was responsible for the most outrageous
graphic designs from Zorn's record on Avant, but it was a while back.

Also, If memory serves me correctly, the first Naked City record
isn't on Tzadik anyway. Isn't the designer of Naked City Radio
Karath=Razar? Interesting...
Is the person doing the report planning on talking about Stephen Byram at all?

My favorite is the first one that ECM issued, Tabula Rasa. I've never warmed
up to Passio (I get bored with it), to give you a little frame of reference.
And that Lou Reed 2-LP thing from the '70s was titled Metal Machine Music. I
think he actually recorded/released it with tongue in cheek, as opposed to
seeing it as any kind of "serious" music. The fact that it came out on a
major label certainly points to he changes in the music biz!

Paraphrase's _Please Advise_ right now. I love Tim Berne's playing,

tortured typography and the impassioned scrawling, it's like design

are you refering to Tomoyo Tanaka Lee? she is the artist Zorn gives props
to on the Buried Secrets/Guts of a Virgin re-release for her work on teh
Painkiller albums, but i'm positive that Ikue is the artist who did teh
cover for derek bailey & the ruins, death praxis, and a few other tzadik

he is the designer for the Screwgun releases? yes, i thought about doing a
segement on him, but i know i'll run into the same problem with finding
biographical information... the paper is just suposed to be about 3 modern,
and one pre-1920 illustrators/grahpic designers. but i thought it would be
interesting to do album cover designers, and more unknown ones at
that(seeing as 3 people are already doing geiger, and that person who did
the Yes album covers(gee, my ignorance of art really shines thru eh?))
but yeah, i'll agree, Screwgun has the some of the most
imaginative/attractive packaging out there.
