  63. tabula rasa was my introduction and i think it has way more variety
  64. and depth than the recordings that followed.  and i'm partial to
  65. pieces involving many cellos.  if you're into vocal churchy music,
  66. then i would highly recommend te deum, which also works quite well for
  67. meditation purposes.  i think te deum is the recording that made it
  68. possible for me to get my phd.

  80.     i have to do a report on 3 modern illustrators for a graphic design 
  81. course that i am enrolled in.  i was wondering if anyone could help me out 
  82. with finding some info on ikue mori's design work, like the covers she does 
  83. for Tzadik...? all i am finding on the net is about her music.  i'd really 
  84. like to incorperate her into the paper, but i don't know if that will be 
  85. possible unless i find a great deal more of this sort of information... 
  86. would it be a good idea to contact Tzadik via email as well?
  87.    well, if anyone has any links or anything, i'd really apreciate it.

  107. haven't heard dirty or washing machine.  of those that i have heard (all
  108. of the except those two, i think) i prefer:

  110. All the SYR ep's (1-4), and i also like the 'silver sessions' ep that
  111. someone else on the list didn't care for too much - although i agree that
  112. it has sort of a superfluous feel (the entire ep consists of waves of
  113. feedback, with some really low level distorted crappy drum machine on
  114. parts - creates a nice drone).  Proceeds (or part of them) go to suicide
  115. prevention (the suicide of a fan prompted its release, i gather from the
  116. liner notes).

  118. from the 'good old days': evol, sister, and daydream nation - if i had to
  119. pick one, i'd have to pick daydream nation (unless i was trying to be cool
  120. ;) by picking one that isn't so widely considered to be their landmark
  121. album, evol (on vinyl - there's a great 'infinte skip' at the end of side
  122. two that you don't get on the cd - or is that on the end of sister?  i'm
  123. pretty sure its evol...)

  125. anyway, a thousand leaves renewed my faith in the major label sonic youth
  126. releases.  a really strong album.

  199. I wouldn't call all of the SYR CDs EPs though.  SYR 4 (Goodbye 20th 
  200. Century) is a 2 CD set.  I also like the SKR 1 (Silver Sessions). 
  201. SKR is Sonic Knuth Records, for the person, Jason Knuth, who 
  202. committed suicide.

  206. I have only recently gotten into Sonic Youth (thanks to Whit) and I 
  207. haven't heard too much of anything early except for Daydream Nation, 
  208. which is great.

  213. "A Thousand Leaves" is really great.  You can hear elements of the 
  214. SYR EPs on the record.  In fact some of the songs are tracks from the 
  215. EPs with vocals and other parts.  The EPs tend to be long and noisy 
  216. with little to no vocals.  There is some vocal from Kim Gordon on 
  217. parts.  I have also heard some live SY from 1998 and I think that 
  218. it's very good.  I like to hear their avant tendencies play out in 
  219. more of a "song" format.  Which is like "A Thousand Leaves."

  233. her name escapes me, look on the first naked city album, her name is

  270. find that Ikue Mori is indeed the designer. Circle Maker is one that 
  271. comes to mind immediately, but I know a lot of what he (as opposed to

  322. Although Ikue is not the graphic designer for *ALL* Tzadik releases, she
  323. is the one for the vast majority of them (unless the credit should read as
  324. "executive designer" :-).

  326. The woman you are talking about was responsible for the most outrageous 
  327. graphic designs from Zorn's record on Avant, but it was a while back.

  456. My favorite is the first one that ECM issued, Tabula Rasa. I've never warmed 
  457. up to Passio (I get bored with it), to give you a little frame of reference.

  459. And that Lou Reed 2-LP thing from the '70s was titled Metal Machine Music. I 
  460. think he actually recorded/released it with tongue in cheek, as opposed to 
  461. seeing it as any kind of "serious" music. The fact that it came out on a 
  462. major label certainly points to he changes in the music biz!

  480. Paraphrase's _Please Advise_ right now.  I love Tim Berne's playing, 
  481. and this is such a good band.  And Byram's artwork is a joy--with the 
  482. tortured typography and the impassioned scrawling, it's like design 
  483. brought back from another dimension.

  503. are you refering to Tomoyo Tanaka Lee? she is the artist Zorn gives props  
  504. to on the Buried Secrets/Guts of a Virgin re-release for her work on teh 
  505. Painkiller albums, but i'm positive that Ikue is the artist who did teh 
  506. cover for derek bailey & the ruins, death praxis, and a few other tzadik 
  507. releases...

  532. he is the designer for the Screwgun releases? yes, i thought about doing a 
  533. segement on him, but i know i'll run into the same problem with finding 
  534. biographical information... the paper is just suposed to be about 3 modern, 
  535. and one pre-1920 illustrators/grahpic designers. but i thought it would be 
  536. interesting to do album cover designers, and more unknown ones at 
  537. that(seeing as 3 people are already doing geiger, and that person who did 
  538. the Yes album covers(gee, my ignorance of art really shines thru eh?))

  540. but yeah, i'll agree, Screwgun has the some of the most 
  541. imaginative/attractive packaging out there.
