  48. the usenet is basically a big internet-wide message board.  it's been
  49. around since 1979.  basically, different people (often universities) have
  50. machines that serve as newsservers.  from what i gather, any given news
  51. server will have a bunch of messages from whatever news groups (topic
  52. areas) it takes messages from.  to access the usenet, you'll need access
  53. to a news server, and then you'll need a program to read the articles
  54. (Netscape used to do this; i still use unix and linux, so i don't know).
  55. so suppose i use news server X to get messages.  i can respond to a
  56. message i read, and it gets sent to my server (X), and X then passes the
  57. message along.  After a while, every news server on the planet that
  58. accepts messages from that group will have my message available for other
  59. people to read.
  60.  
  61. there are thousands of different news groups with names like
  62. rec.music.bluenote (jazz and blues discussion), alt.binaries.porn.teen.xxx
  63. (guess), and so forth.  once you have access to a news server and a
  64. program to read articles, you can subscribe (and unsubscribe) to whatever
  65. groups your news server carries.
  66.  
  67. a while back someone figured out how to post non-text information to news
  68. groups (basically by converting it into text - new newsreaders will
  69. decode it automagically). this allowed for the posting of pictures,  music
  70. (mp3s) and programs.
  71.  
  72. so what some people here are saying is that there is a usenet newsgroup
  73. to which some kind soul is posting mp3s of live shows of music we all
  74. enjoy.  the problem is those of us that don't have access to this
  75. particular news group all turn green with jealousy (myself included,
  76. seeing as the only live music trades i can seem to find these days are
  77. classic rock and 'jam bands', neither of which are very enticing).

  84. know.  i'll tell you what i did: logged into my unix account when they

  87. more info.  however, i hope what i did say clears some things up...

  112. record will be re-issued Jan 26 by East-West (Japan).

  114. Secondly, hat[now]ART just released a 2-CD recording
  115. of Cornelius Cardew's "Treatise" performed by a
  116. Chicago-centric and Art Lange-conducted crew of Jim
  117. Baker (piano, electronics), Carrie Biolo (vibes,
  118. percussion), Guillermo Gregorio (clarinet, alto
  119. saxophone), Fred Londberg-Holm (cello, electronics)
  120. and Jim O'Rourke (electronics). I just finished
  121. listening to the first disc, and it sounds fantastic -
  122. a very quiet, Feldman-esque dynamic throughout.

  156. For those that didn't, unfortunately, most providers only keep these high
  157. volume postings online for a couple of days.  I just checked Supernews and
  158. they have some Last Exit and Praxis posts from a few days ago available,
  159. but they'll probably be gone by tomorrow.  If you need a good news
  160. provider, Supernews has a good selection of groups and a long retention
  161. rate - go to www.supernews.com to see how to gain access (about $12 a
  162. month).

  338. Well, I guess it's the same for a Mac as for a PC as far as getting attached
  339. files from a newsgroup? To tell the truth, I really am not sure. All I do is
  340. 1. get as many headers from the NG as possible(my news server can only get
  341. 1000 headers at a time), by sorting them by subject, slescting the ones I
  342. don't need, like "Zeppelin at the Fillmore West, dude, tracks 1-100", right
  343. clicking, and marking them all as "read", then getting more headers until
  344. there are no more listed as "not downloaded." (this is all with OE 5.0,
  345. forgive me if this info is useless to you) 2. higlight and download the
  346. first part of the file you want, like painkillertrack03.mp3 1/24, when you
  347. have the entire first chunk, select all the pieces, like 1/24 through 24/24,
  348. right click, slect "combine and decode" (man, I'm sure that the procedure
  349. will be different for a Mac user - I hope I'm not wasting your time!), and,
  350. dependinfg on your connection and the size of the file, after a while, you
  351. will have the message with the entire mp3 as an attachment. Dblclick on it
  352. and open it from its current location or save it to disk. And there you are.

  401. Wow, just about everything is on-topic now.

  403. Haven't seen this mentioned here before. Zorn, working with Koch distributors,
  404. has made a deal with Tower Records to create an "Avant Garde" section. I don't
  405. know the details (all stores? who decides what goes in? when does/did it
  406. begin?), but there's a pamphlet with a four paragraph essay from Zorn about the
  407. importance of recognizing this 40-year-old form of music that isn't rock or
  408. classical but gets lumped in with them. Then there's a list of close to 300
  409. names that should be rightfully included in the new section. Bruce at DMG has
  410. copies of the brochure. This list seems to be generated to some extent (but not
  411. entirely) by the Tzadik/Avant catalogs (Evan Lurie is on, but John or Lounge
  412. Lizards aren't, for example). But its not only those names, and it makes no
  413. claim to be exhaustive.

  415. So now everything I have to say is officially relevant.
  416.  
  417. I saw one of the best and one of the worst sets of the year on consecutive
  418. nights this weekend. The Derek Bailey/Susie Ibarra duo at Roulette Sat. was
  419. really remarkable, a phenomenal sensitivity between them. They also have a brand
  420. new duo recording out on Incus, that I picked up there (Bruce at DMG said he'd
  421. have it in stock this week). It was so good, in fact, that Derek was still
  422. charged up last night, because he seemed to enjoy the trio with Jamaladeen
  423. Tacuma and Calvin Weston, which was some of the worst crap I've seen in a long
  424. time.

  426. The first set, without Tacuma, started rough but after the first 10 minutes or
  427. so, Weston stepped back a little and started responding to as well (instead of
  428. just guiding) Bailey. The last 25 minutes were quite nice (all of the sets over
  429. the weekendwere under 40 minutes, 2 per night). I'll confess to not knowing
  430. Tacuma well and not caring for him at all -- I've seen him play with the Ribot/
  431. Tacuma/Zorn/Gaugh/Weston band sometimes called Punk Funk Harmelodic, which I
  432. find pretty boring. Other people seemed to really be liking the Roulette set,
  433. although they seemed to be overlooking Bailey as much as the rhythm section,
  434. which was easy to do since Bailey was fairly well drowned out. Tacuma stomped
  435. around, turned his volume up louder and louder, and seemed to have little
  436. interest in what Bailey was doing except possibly adding some ambience to his
  437. groove. He did stop at one point and watch Bailey play pretty closely, one
  438. eyebrow raised, and then laughed before returning to his stinkin groove. I like
  439. some funk. I'm a big Bootsy fan. But even on his own he didn't seem to be doing
  440. anything. Not only did he make it impossible to follow Bailey's ideas, he never
  441. developed any of his own, instead just groove-hopping, grandstanding and
  442. filibustering. The three Zornlist members I know of who were there during the
  443. first two nights were wiser than I in not returning. Of course, neither Tacuma
  444. nor Weston are on the avant-garde list, so what do you expect?
  445.  
  446. Night 1, was billed as a trio with Ikue Mori and John Zorn (who both made the
  447. list), but was supplemented by Jim Staley (list) and Cyro Baptista (not list,
  448. nor is Melt Banana, I notice, blowing holes in my label catalogue theory). I
  449. don't really think there's anything magic about this list, of course. But it
  450. does seem to be working for me right now. I like the non Avant Garde Baptista
  451. quite a bit with Beat the Donkey or on the Filmworks/Chamber Masada discs. But
  452. with the Bailey set he seemed very out of place, going nonstop, switching
  453. instruments constantly and always playing steady, busy rhythms that made it hard
  454. to focus on the broader ideas Bailey and others were developing. I guess they
  455. have a duo recording from the early 70s out, which would be interesting to hear.
  456. Reviews, anyone? Bailey unfortunately only played about half the time, not
  457. unusual for the Company style nights, but disappointing if you live an ocean
  458. away from him and are looking forward to seeing him. Won't be making the Bailey/
  459. Min Xao Fen duo at Tonic tonight, look forward to hearing about it though.

  461. Also, did anyone catch Zorn with Beat the Donkey (also on Sat)?

  463. Picked up the new Jim O'Rourke ep. More of his songs, being called "a.m. radio-
  464. inspired," though I don't know if he's ever said that. It's nice, kinda between
  465. Bad Timing and Eureka in tempo and feel, 4 tracks, one instrumental. Good place
  466. to start if you've been curious about these pop records he's doing. Although I
  467. guess it's Avant Garde pop, according to The List. Didn't pick up the new Sonic
  468. Youth, though. They're not on The List, although many of the composers on the
  469. disc are.

  471. Last thing. Saw Satlah at DMG Sun. Danny Zamir's trio, formerly called Not For
  472. Sale Trio. Zamir is I guess 22 or so, and has fantastic chops. Really great,
  473. high energy klez inspired playing. Very Masada-leaning, although I wouldn't want
  474. to make it sound like they're a knock-off. The heads and the bass/drum interplay
  475. are similar, though. I guess they'll be recording with the Masada String Trio
  476. next year for Tzadik (so they'll be on next year's List, perhaps).

  495. As always, around this time the annual jewish festival was held here in
  496. Antwerp.

  498. Personally there were to relevations: Frank London (klezmatics) had a new
  499. trio called Nigunim (withe Lorin Sklamberg on vocals and accordeon and Rob
  500. Schwimmers on piano). The theme of this band was the return of the messias,
  501. but it had a broad range of sounds: from contemplative to light grooves. He
  502. also payed hommage to Lester Bowie (a friend of me mentioned that London
  503. played once in Bowies band, but was not sure).

  505. Anyway, is there an album out from this band (probably yes, isn't it Patrice
  506. 'here are the details' Roussell).
  507.  
  508. Another band that impressed me was the polish band Kroke: based on
  509. traditional instruments and classic themes they did everything with it: from
  510. soundscapes to free-jazz stuff. GREAT
  511.
