Seconded, but:

I have to disagree. Personally, the secong Lifetime
album, "turn it over" (w/ McLaughlin, Young & Jack
Bruce) is even better: harsher, darker, more intense .
. . the opening take on Chick Corea's "To Whom it May
Concern" is probably one of my favorite recordings of
all time . . . also, Williams' vocals are a lot better
this time, still not exactly good, but remarkably
effective nonetheless.
And there are actually some good moments on the third
Lifetime album, "Ego" (w/Young, Ron Carter, & a
guitarist & 2 percussionists whose names I don't
remember, but no McLaughlin), though I probably
wouldn't pay full price for it again.
Later,
Eric

For the last month and a half or so, I have been featuring the Prelapse
group both on my website and radio show. Anyone who misses Naked City
would (should?) appreciate this immensely, although I should add that
their original compositions are far from imitations or carbon copies.
The site also features various live photos I took from when the band
opened for a Zorn/Patton gig in Northampton, Ma. in1996, as well as
concert programs from the Stephen drury sponsored NEC Zorn fest, which
took place Feb. 5th 1996. the direct link is at

Until the end of November, I'll be featuring all kinds of exciting Naked
City and Prelapse music, interviews, and etc. on my radio show which you
can get through real audio.

For an amazing latin influenced jazz album you should try to find Stan Getz's
"Captian Marvel" Album (I think it was reissued as "The Lyrical Stan Getz").
This is a superb group consisting of Stan Getz on Sax, Stanley Clarke: Bass,
Bass (Electric),Chick Corea: Piano, Piano (Electric), Airto Moreira:
Percussion, and Tony Williams: Drums. This is an extemely underated
album/group which has fusionesque energy but a more jazzy vocab. For a mor
"out there" you should check out the Eric Dolphy album "Out to Lunch." This
is a classic free jazz album with amazing performances throughout.

Subject: O'Rourke/Mazzacane Connors collaborations
A couple weeks ago, somebody (Jon A., I think)
wrote in a review of the new Jim O'Rourke and
Loren Mazzacane Connors release, a cd of guitar
duets, titled "In Bern" released on Hat Hut.
Well, I have now given the cd repeated listens
and I will add to the earlier review. The cd
is somewhat mellow. Very nice. Not strictly
improv. There is presumably some improv happening
but there seems to have been some underlying
structure agreed upon beforehand.
This is my favorite kind of improv, usually.
In a nutshell, not chaotic plink-plonk insect
improv. Very recommended.
On the other hand, I think that there are two
releases which include O'Rourke/Mazzacane Connor
guitar duets which are superior to the Hat Hut
release but they each only include 1 track of the duo.
The first is on the untitled meme
compilation on meme (meme000 cd), which features
one track entitled "There's Hell in Bern", which
is presumably from teh same sessions as "In Bern"
but is a very sweet revisit of one of the songs
on O'Rourke's Eureka (I think Eureka, maybe Bad
Timing, I forget).
The second is on the cd "Playbacks" by Derek Bailey
on Bingo (BIN 004). This cd has one track with
a guitar duet by Jim O'Rourke and
Loren Mazzacane Connors. On top of the duet,
a track with some spoken word comments by
Derek Bailey is overlaid. Track is called "George".
Pays homage to George Lewis. Very nice.

I think this is fairly accurate - chris stamey told me that he played
with the golden palominos before the first album came out & that they were
mainly a samba band at the time (!), which certainly indicates that arto
was involved more than on the subsequent released recordings.

There is a Merzbow video coming with the Merzbox, so if you willing to shell out
$500 you'll have it along with either 50 or 100 Merzbow cds, I can't remeber which.
If anyone does see that info on that documentary, please post to the list. I have a
friend in Osaka looking for it for me, so if I get any info, I'll send a heads up.

Subject: Zony Mash new CDs
Hey Zornlisters,
Last night I had the pleasure of hearing rough mixes of the two new Zony
Mash CDs. The electric disc (Upper Egypt) sounds great. I've enjoyed their
previous discs, but I've always wished that Zony Mash would do a live CD.
Zony Mash is great fun to see live - they're so tight and there's lots of
energy. The studio CDs always sounded perfect and refined to me, but not
much of a reflection of the live band. I'm happy to report that Upper Egypt
has a lot more of the live energy than the older discs, and I think there's
more range in their sound palette than ever before too. Tim Young
contributes much more on guitar than in the past. I think he's really grown
in the last couple of years. I was thinking this was Zony Mash's best CD to
date, but then I heard the other one ...
The Zony Mash acoustic disc is entitled American Bandstand. It has almost
all new music - there's one tune that appears on both of the new CDs. Wayne
plays piano all the way through on this one, and his playing is simply
stunning. I've never heard him sound better on record. Most of the songs
are pretty quiet and introspective, and beautifully realized. This is a
heartbreakingly beautiful disc! The band has done only a handful of
acoustic gigs, but the tapes I've collected have been getting a lot of
playing time at home. I'm sure this CD will get plenty as well!
The CDs are due to be released sometime in the spring. Upper Egypt will be
on Knitting Factory Records, and American Bandstand will be on Songlines.
I'd recommend both!

Don't remember that discussion but the Alex Lykiard is generally considered
to be the best; however I think it may have gone out of print in the US
(but I guess from your e-mail address that you're not in the US; this was
published by a British publisher--at least my copy was). The Penguin
edition is easiest to find. There was another translation during the 60s I
think; have only read bits of that one. Also heard rumors about one that
was done recently but don't know if that's been published.

Subject: Lindsay's PRIZE - different release
Hi Philozorners,
I have a question regarding the new and exciting Arto Lindsay's album
PRIZE. I found info about a different release of this album, by Avex
(?) records, which is suposed to contain some "extra" tracks. I can
cuess, that's the Japanese release, which was published first
(September 10, 1999), and - as usually - has few extra songs, which
are not included in the american pressing. What's the "extra" content?
Is it worth paying double price ($28.50)? I found it at amazon.com:

As I remember it, The very first aggregation that called
itself the GP's was the mutant funk/improv line-up that made the
first LP, and did a handful of amazing live gigs in 1982. In 83 they
toured Europe with a heavier, guitar driven line-up (w/o Arto).
Some time later, the band with Stamey/Straw/Harris/Blegvad was formed.
It sounds to me like Stamey was referring to the early
Ambitous Lovers, which revolved around Lindsay & Fier and actually
was a samba band(more or less).

Good news then. Exact Change does high quality publications & probably
have plenty of interest to Zorn listers with a taste for surrealist &

Be sure to check out Eric Dolphy's 'Out to Lunch' and Andrew Hill's

adventurous role, because these albums slightly depart from the
conventional hardbop recordings from that period.
Both albums are available on Blue Note in the so-called Rudy van
