  178. appearance of _american splendor_.  the art is by joe sacco.  harvey has
  179. been writing about jazz for some time; another of his recent comics (sorry,

  210. very much in the same fields of sound, and Otomo's source could very likely

  261. Huh, I didn't notice that. Also worth mentioning is
  262. that, according to the little pamphlet inside the 7",
  263. Gentle Giant is planning on releasing the 'Box Full Of
  264. Ghosts' which will include all three of the split 7"
  265. singles (yes, including the Otomo/Marclay) and a video
  266. compilation.

  496. ok, ok, i shouldn'ta said anything about the prices at a certain record store in
  497. new york. they are usually only slightly higher, and sometimes lower, than other
  498. nearbly like-minded shops. and they do sometimes get new releases, especially
  499. japanese, way before other stores. but since i started it, they do also sell
  500. used cds on occaison for astronomical amounts. i've seen out-of-print but hardly
  501. rare things for 3 or 4 times what a nearby store is charging for the same used
  502. disc at the same time, and i've seen that happen quite a bit. i also saw a disc
  503. marked 'out of print $25' once which was not even out of print. it's offputting
  504. because they've got a great selection. but, as my granny would say, they're
  505. mighty proud of their records. and they're rude besides. but, y'know, just my
  506. 'pinions.

  563. just picked up the reissue of rahsaan roland kirk's 'the case of the 3 sided
  564. dream in audio color' in a 2-disc set with lateef's 'part of the search.' i'm
  565. not really familiar with lateef and this is, i think, one of the oddest things
  566. i've ever heard -- straight ahead songs (jazz, country-blues, doo wop, something
  567. that reminds me of benny hill) sometimes cutting off suddenly with brief segues
  568. between. the booklet has notes from rrk's original release and the line-up for
  569. 'search.' so i assume if there was anything enlightening about the record
  570. included when it came out (early, mid 70s? doesn't say), that would be included.
  571. can anyone shed light for me on lateef or this record? was he always such a nut?
  572. i do like the record -- at least, i'm pretty sure i do.

  591. There's also a flipside to that, Kurt. If you bring in
  592. a used CD that's rare or out-of-print, you'll get good
  593. money for it. So, sure, OM will sell a used copy of
  594. Agencement's 'Viosphere' for $35, but the guy who sold
  595. it to the store probably made off with $25-30. They
  596. wouldn't have gotten nearly that much at Kim's.
  597.  
  598. The person who does the used buying at OM is a very
  599. knowledgeable, hardcore collector. He knows what
  600. things are worth and what people will pay for them.
  601. But unlike most knowledgeable buyers, he doesn't screw
  602. over the customer whose looking to sell their stuff.
  603.

  643. Summarizing YL's career in a nutshell is nearly impossible. I'd suggest 
  644. you do a Web search under his name and you're sure to find a wealth of 
  645. information.

  647. Briefly Lateef (real name Bill Evans) was first a saxophonist in the late 
  648. swing, early bop era. Following his conversion to Islam, he moved to 
  649. Detroit where he studied flute, oboe and various ethnic instruments. He 
  650. began recording to a modified hard bop/Eastern sound style for Savoy and 
  651. Prestige in the 1950s. He later was a member of Cannonball Adderley's 
  652. group in the 1960s and since then has been on his own.

  654. He has recorded albums in every style from hyper-bebop to "exoticism" to 
  655. so-called New Ag to funky tenor battles, taught in the United States and 
  656. Africa and is generally recognized as one of the first Americans 
  657. legitimately interested in world music.

  669. Greg and I saw the Mr. Bungle show last night at Recher Theater in Towson, MD.
  670. I was very disappointed. These guys are like a bad spoof lounge act now. They
  671. played almost only songs from their new album, a few from the 2nd one, the
  672. crappy ones.

  674. The lone bright spot was Travolta. This song rocked, and the place was going
  675. wild. They had a great crowd response for this song. They did play another song
  676. from the first album, My Ass Is On Fire, but it was such a shitty disco lounge
  677. fucked up version of the song, I don't want to talk about it.

  679. In 3 albums, this band has gone from having a CD in my top 10 all time, a
  680. concert I rank in the top 5, to having a CD I'll play frisbee with, and a
  681. concert that is by far the worst one I've seen this year, and probably for
  682. years to come.
