9/30/99 - Mercury, Goleta, CA
Hope to see you west-coasters at one of the shows!

From: Peter Hollo <raven@fourplay.com.au>
Subject: re: we
I got We's first album shortly after it came out and considered it (as a
fairly discerning listener to/DJ of experimental electronica) a minor
masterpiece - great studio trickery, good programming, really
interesting sounds.
The second album, on the first few listens, was indeed a MAJOR
disappointment. I have grown to like it more, but I still find the drum
programming on the whole quite stilted, somehow never quite getting
flowing and funky enough (not funky as in "like funk music" but just as
in rhythmically exciting), and the sounds are lovely but too much like
moer of same from the first album. Not that that's a bad thing, but it
could somehow be more _different_ of the same... (?)
I would recommend that anyone interested in the group get "As Is" first,
and then go for "The Square Root of Negative One".
Also notable are their remixes of Tipsy, on two different 12"s, the
names of which I can't remember right now...
Peter.

I guess it's obvious from what I say in the review, but I'll reiterate it:
the album is a fucking blast, from start to finish. Easily the best stuff
I've heard either Previte or Horvitz do in ages.

There's been a change to the Masada show:
John Zorn's Masada will be playing at Tonic on Thursday, September 30 at
9:00pm and 10:30pm. Tickets are $20 per set. Zorn will also be playing at
midnight with Andy Haas and Fly.
Something else that may be of interest to this list is a Jack Smith Memorial

John Zorn and will include musical exotica from his Smith's record
collection spun by Zorn himself.

Note: Japan pressing not released yet (planned for October 6, 1999).

OK, initially somebody told me about an upcoming Arto Lindsay record on a
Japanese label, without any mention of the title. I wrongly assumed that it was
a different record than PRIZE. But today the same person told me that the title
of this record was also PRIZE (and I exclude the possibility of a pure coinci-
dence).
There is of course the possibility that they slightly differ (modulo a bonus
or mistery track), but what I wanted to say was that it was the same record
with two pressings.
Patrice (wondering if he really understood Kurt's question).

I heard Marc once on Vince Scellsa's radio program, and he pronounced it like
what a frog says. However, I have heard him introduced as if he was French.
Maybe Marc can tell us.

What is a frog? Oh! you mean these weird little creatures with a beret, a load
of onions on the shoulder, and a baguette under the arm :-).

Marc is not French, although he might have some French roots.
Also, I heard Ribot being pronounced with an explicit "t" at the end (which
is definitely not French).

Teodoro Anzelotti on Winter & Winter. It's a beautiful album with a healthy
concentration on many non-standard pieces from the Satie oeuvre, sensitively
played. Satie & accordion: how can you go wrong?
