Maybe you mean Mysteries of the Macabre: vocalists making the sounds
of shut down airplaines and weird texts in general. I heard the piece
live in London last year when it was played by the London Sinfonia
(also the orchestra that recorded it for Sony's Ligeti Edition,
excellent series!!), and the audience reacted to it like it was a
comedy play. Strange but unforgetable experience.

Subject: genre-hopping
While listening to music with a friend (ranging from Death's _The
Sound of Perseverance_ to Uri Caine's _The Sidewalks of New York_ and
Dave Douglas' _Magic Triangle_, plus of course lots more, we came to
the question whether atonal metal or klezmer metal existed.
We came to the conclusion this isn't the case, at least not when it's
played and composed by musicians with a metal background, but maybe
our field of vision isn't wide enough. Can anyone commend to this?
Wouldn't it be a nice supplement to Radical Jewish Culture? A
deathmetal band playing klezmer melodies?

The Sony series is great, especially the Mechanical Music disc (vol 5)
and the piano duets on vol 6.

Not _exactly_ what you're asking for, but Kletka Red's "Hijacking" contains
sort of punk-style klezmer tunes. Also, Naftule's Dream's stuff often
features elements of heavy rock - distorted guitar based grooves, but of
course they've got a tuba underneath, how metal can you get? And of course
there's Metaltov by Naked City...

Subject: dave douglas, where are you?
Any news on when the new Winter & Winter Douglas release hits the stores in the States? I heard August 10th as a date, but... On related note, anyone hear the new (only?) Broke Back disc (if thats been released?) I just recently got into Tortise and read a positive review / blurb of Broke Back.
One last question - come on, fess up... any big time Jazz Butcher fans out there? I scour used record bins looking for some of the older recordings on CD. Now I hear there is a new Pat Fish project Sumosonic. Any one anyone?
Thanks, and happy listening...

A couple days ago there was an interesting thread on violin/cello, but
no one mentioned the Mark Feldman/Wolfang Puschnig "Spaces" on Emarcy.
Are there any opinions or was it just forgetfulness?
Thanks.

Subject: Sabbath in Paradise
Hi,
I was on the Internet Movie Data Base. I put in an entry for John
Zorn (I was curious about the availability of the films he composed
music for). In the actor section came up a documentary titled "Sabbath
in Paradise". The movie was released in 1998. Zorn is credited for the
music score and is listed as a "cast member". Also listed are Michael
Alpert, Anthony Coleman, David Krakauer, Frank London, Roy Nathanson,
Marc Ribot, and Andy Statman. A documentary on Radical Jewish Culture
perhaps? Is there is a way of getting a hold of this movie? If this
has come up in discussion before I joined this email list I apologize.
Please email privately if this is indeed the case.

What Leimgruber on Victo?
A "record" of his concert with Hauser/Crispell/Leandre at FIMAV?
I haven't seen/heard anything about its existence. But it was a great
concert, especially because I saw the three minus Marilyn in TO the week
before and Crispell really spurred Urs to do "something" in Vic'ville.

as a Canadian who has been living in Boston for the last 3 years, i
must say i'm experiencing an all out renewed sense of culture shock.
maybe it's just a re-awakening. the only way i can twist American
society to see it as a more positive place is to embrace the irony
that is inherent in almost every aspect of the society and culture.
It's the media's job to reflect what's going on out there to the
people, but of course these days people get so many of their ideas
and thoughts from the media. there are these circular feedback loops
everywhere. sometimes i wonder whether cops on t.v. are portraying
the cops out in the 'real' world, or if cops in the world learn their
behavior from t.v. clearly it's a combination of both.
so it seems to me, though, that we should stop pretending that the
'newspaper' gives us 'news'. the 'newspaper' is a commodity like
any other commodity that is bought and sold. every printed word,
no matter what the medium, is interpretation. everything lies
somewhere between fiction and non-fiction, but we shouldn't be
naive enough to believe anything we read. read the newspaper
for amusement. if you want to be amused by the killings in LA,
go ahead and buy the paper that prints the stories. but if you're
not amused by it, then don't buy it, and don't read it. it's
extreme, but in a capitalistic society, one of the best ways one
can exercise their political and ethical views is by being mindful
of where you spend your dollars; if a dollar isn't spent here, then
it will be spent there.
yes, it's true that there is something wrong with journalism. but
the only way you can change journalism is by sending a message that
reflects what you want to read and support being printed, and what
you don't. instead of reading the newspaper, read a book. evidently,
being an 'informed' citizen is overrated.
