can anyone recommend Zorn works to me besides
"Spillane" and "Godard?" What about his filmworks, or
book of heads. I wasnt into the bribe, or masada, but
love naked city. I found masada and the bribe too "by
the numbers" for me. Any suggestions? I do like his
new string quartet CD.

If you like Zorn's String Quartets, try Shea's Classical Works
(Tzadik #7041). Pretty dense sometimes with a clear influence of
Ligeti's clustercompositions.

Kaffe Matthews plays violins, sampling gadgets, audiences and performance
spaces. While each of her works is reputed to be very space-specific, by
the time she's done running it through the blender, her cds work very well
and don't sound like they're losing anything.
If you're into cello (sort of a big violin), I highly recommend
Frances-Marie Uitti's set of improv on BVHaast. She plays two bows at once
for some truly eerie sounds.

Yes, thanks for the tips. This also reminds me of Phil Wachsmann, whose
work with Gush and the Even Parker ElectroAcoustic Ensemble (among others)

Two names not often linked, I'd wager, but yesterday I listened to
Braxton's '7 Compositions Trio (1989)' (with Roidinger and Tony Oxley)
and 'Eight (+3) Tristano Compositions' (with a quintet of Jon Rapson,
Scott, McBee and Cyrille) and was especially impressed by these two.
1) Any recommendations on Roidinger either as a leader or featured
player? His work here reminded me a lot of Holland's circa Circle.
2) Scott (nom de musique?) is a Bay Area pianist with a handful of
releases under his own name. Anyone heard them?

One last reminder to call in your contribution to our on-air avant

Trent Radio invites you to help create an improvised
"Day Long Song" on 11 August 1999.
Starting at 11am (Eastern Daylight Time), we are inviting
musicians, poets and sound-makers from all time zones to
participate in person and by phone throughout the day with a
continuously changing group.
There is no presumption that the "song" will conform to any
common definition of "songness", though it is expected that
idiomatic explorations will be episodically embraced and
abandoned during the day.
Anyone is welcome to contribute whatever they what to the piece
by coming into Trent Radio at 715 George Street North at
Parkhill in Peterborough, Ontario or by calling the on air
line at (705) 741 4011 and contributing via the phone lines.
Many star contributors are already slated to contribute so
please count yourself among them and come or call in to the
piece. The piece will continue until at least 10pm but might
carry on beyond that, depending on how badly everyone is
bleeding by then.

I've been enjoying Filmworks I immensely. One of the previously
hidden treasures for me was Robert Quine's playing--finally, I
understood why people include him in their lists of great guitarists.
No unnecessary flash, but playing that's absolutely right. I'm
looking forward to getting the others.
If you're into Naked City, check out Spy vs. Spy--the Ornette Coleman
covers CD. Everything's played at quadruple speed, and Tim Berne
joins Zorn on sax. I can't recall the rest of the players at the
moment, but there were two (simultaneous) drummers on the session,
I'm pretty sure. You may dig Painkiller, with Laswell and Mick
Harris from Napalm Death, but the CD collection I have, Execution
Ground, is way slower than Naked City, but you get all the intense
screaming.
You might also want to check out Christian Marclay's stuff--he's a
turntablist who's often performed with Zorn. There's some intense
stuff going on with a lot of his work that might work for you.
Best,
FWIW, as a point of reference, I've always dug Masada.

Do recordings exst of the earlier, slower version of this project? I
saw them at the Knit and loved it, but this was before Zorn decided that
"Fscking hardcore rules", and I was quite disappointed when the Spy vs

I think that all the tracks are covers and
that they are speeded up over the original
versions. I believe his intent was to sort of
update Ornette Colemen and two ways he
thought to best do this were speed and volume.
There's that one article where the writer talks about
how he went to see Spy vs Spy and it was SSSSOOOO
loud that he condsidered suing Zorn.

Well, yes, but... the speed and volume were a late addition to the
project, after they'd been doing the Ornette covers for quite a
while. Originally, they sounded rather more like Masada. They went
loud and fast later, and recorded the record that way.

Hi all,
First, I have a question about the Chicago Jazz Fest soon approaching. Is
Lacy really playing? I'd heard nothing about this until the post on the
list. I know that Sam Rivers is playing w/Bluiett and Ray Anderson, as
well as Masada, DKV, and other goodies. But which Lacy? The Cry?
Second, for whoever asked about the Berne Empire box, I whole-heartedly
recommend it. If you like Berne, and I think that goes for many on this
list, it's essential listening. And you can get it fer cheap too.
His compositional ideas were very rich, even at the earliest stage of his
career, and his playing is also mostly on. In addition, you get to hear
super-early Nels Cline as well as vintage Motian, Golia, John Carter, etc.

Enthusiastically seconded! Also, Mark Feldman goes without mentioning,
though many of you have probably _seen_ the man play, which I have not. I
like his Tzadik solo album a whole lot; one of the very first to be issued
back in '95. To double-up my rec's, I might mention that Feldman's playing
is great on Ned Rothenberg's POWERLINES, a good record, and Muhal Richard
Abrams' ONE LINE,TWO VIEWS (both New World), which might be a great record.
I like it, at any rate.
Has anyone mentioned Phil Durrant's electroacoustic solo record SOWARI
(Acta) yet? A bit sparse to my taste, but unlike anything I've heard,
anywhere. Chirps and scratches, ambient to abrupt.
And there is a beautiful Paul Giger solo album on ECM, from the
mid-Nineties, called SCHATTENWELT; I would readily recommend this to almost
any new music listener. Challenging, maybe overdubbed----I'm astonished if
it's not, and embarrassed if it is. Nonetheless, minute details, violent
outbursts, and whispers. Very nice! (Despite the "ECM echo".) (ECM=Echo
Chamber Music)
Anyone who likes 'cello, BTW, might really enjoy the brilliant Georg
Graewe/Gerry Hemingway/Ernst Reijseger trio, which may be one of my all-time
favorite improv "groups". So good! (Try SATURN CYCLE, for starters...)
And the Ligeti and Penderecki cello concerti are pretty scary, esp. the
Pend.
Happy listening all,

My favorite improvising violinist is Malcolm Goldstein. His tone is
probably an acquired taste, but worth it. I'd start with his live
"Goldstein Plays Goldstein" on da capo.
