Ditto. And the night before last, I actually received a call from them. They
wanted to know how I thought about their service! It was all slightly
embarrassing to say the least. Oh well.
By the way, they batted one (Zappa's Lumpy Gravy) for five with my order.

Those mid-seventies records were Pat's foray into "fusion", but he's really a
hard bop guitarist, and one of the greatest at that. My favorites:
"Consciousness", "Live" and "Exit".

I did too. And the more I thought about that so-called "customer survey" they
called about, the more I starting thinking it was really a ruse to find out
how many discs to actually bill me for. As of now, nothing has shown up on my

Greetings,
Does anyone know about any details about a piece that John Cage did along
with members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago? I had read about this
somewhere and Joseph Jarman remembers this happening though he can't
remember the piece.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

They're based in Austin Texas, apparently affiliated with the record store
33 degrees in that city. Read about it at http://www.nd.org. They publish
CDs, but not with the magazine (although it sez here that the first 1000
copies of the next issue will contain a cd).

I'm hearing more and more about electonic composer of all stripes using
laptops for live electronics, etc. Why do Macs seem to be the computer of
choice? What programs do composers on this list use, and what do these
programs "do"? And what specs are required to effectively run sound
programs? Can the many lucky listeners here describe what kinds of sounds
people like Durrant, O'Rourke, etc., make with their computers, live, laptop
or otherwise? Thanks, everyone.

While not a Mac person myself, I do have one cool anecdote about them:
while driving from Dallas to Austin for a gig last year, I was talking
to a friend who was riding with me about what he might do on the gig.
He got the idea of sampling bits of the Comma CD and other spoken
things, creating loops, and dropping them into improvisations. So he
whipped out his Powerbook, hooked up the cigarette-lighter-based
power supply, used the CD-to-cassette patchcord from my CD Walkman to
run the computer sound through the car sound system, and voila!
instant sound studio. He did all the sampling and processing on the
way, and had a full stack of them to play with with plenty of time
to spare. Most impressive.

Offhand, (and--full disclosure here--as a Mac user) I can't say why
people seem to be using Macs for audio more, unless it's historical: many
audio programs were on the Mac first. I'd expect that pretty much any
platform can give you the ability to get things done, although you're
better off in general on a platform you know and are comfortable with.
(Notice the attempt to sidestep the platform flame-wars...)
For playing samples on the laptop, I use BackToBasics, an extremely
impressive and affordable piece of shareware developed by the band
Operation Reinformation (O.R.I.). You can download an evaluation copy
from http://www.reinformation.com/ Mac and Windows, minimal
requirements. BackToBasics lets you map samples (on the Mac side,
saved as System 7-compatible sound resources; can't say what format for
the Windows side) to the keys on your laptop's keyboard, so you can play
it just like a keyboard sampler. There are a variety of manipulations
you can do as well--stereo placement, level/overdrive, key behavior,
pitch, and I think a few others I'm forgetting. It's a great program,
and it should be less than $30.
For creating or more extensive manipulation of sounds before they go into
BTB, I'm using the shareware program SoundSculptor II. An evaluation copy
is downloadable from http://members.aol.com/sculptorii/ Loads of
effects and editing options, although I think it supports only up to 16
bit. But the price is right: $30 shareware, IIRC.
I've also been playing a bit with M, which isn't so much a sampler as a
"process" generator for MIDI. It's a bit hard to describe, but there's
some extensive description (and that ever-present eval copy) at
http://www.cycling74.com/

116 - MUSIC FOR VIOLIN AND PIANO: Mark Feldman, Sylvie Courvoisier
Recorded at Clinton Studios, New York City on December 23, 1998
(1,8) recorded at Zurich DRS on June 15, 1996
Produced by Sylvie Courvoisier and Mark Feldman
Sylvie Courvoisier: piano; Mark Feldman: violin.
1999 - Avant (Japan), Avan 065 (CD)
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is a great record of wonderfully interpreted chamber music. The music, I
guess totally composed, wanders from post-romantic to more contemporary/avant,
and this in an almost seamless way. The range of music genres covered makes it
feel like a kind of recital covering 150 years of music, although all composi-
tions are by Sylvie and Mark.
