Yes, they are.  I am not the worlds biggest Grateful Dead fan.  But I always
liked the Dead's "Blues for Allah" album.  And the CD where Illuminati do that
album front to back is great.

I've been trying to find that Tropicalia 5 CD set for a while, but with the
usual distribution problems in Quebec, I can find it in Montreal. Could you
give me the details - recording label, title, etc. so that I could order

I'm not sure where to turn, but I've just recently gotten into Tortoise and
have heard an enjoyed music by Oval (?) and Microstoria.  Can anybody on

genre please.

A good place is just about anyplace, any cover that looks interesting. His solo
work is pretty diverse, but can roughly be divided into song and sonic
experiment.

Song cds are apparent from the cover because they'll include titles you already
know -- they tend to include lots of covers, Tammy Wynette, Roger Miller, Pink
Floyd, whatnot. The recent Normalized? is a good one in this vein.

Sonic experiment stuff includes both live and tape manipulation sorts of things.
Recent faves are Insect Attractor on Leo and the 2cd Jungle Cookies, I believe
on House of Chadponk. Insect Attractor is a nice, quiet, very unusual piece for
varied instrumentations, much of it "live," but Dr. C also creates really great
tape montages, more of which are on Jungle Cookies (instrumentation mixed with,
for example, sounds picked up from a microphone hanging out a window in
Amsterdam, a Sammy Davis, Jr., cd that had been buried underground for several
weeks, etc.)

You're in NY, right? (Have we met?) Bruce at DMG would probably play you some
examples if you stop by when it's not busy. Or talk to Eugene when he's here in
August. He's very accessible (and he'll be playing at the Brecht Forum on the
27th and 28th).

I think they're on 8 or 9 piece Dead jazz thing. There's a big band called Jazz
is Dead that does the same dealy. The boots of David Murray jamming with the
real Dead blow poo outta Illuminati, from what little I've heard. But then, I
abhor the Dead, so what do I know.

Also, while I'm here, could someone explain that Spillaine/Synclavier thing? I
saw Spillaine live, so obviously they can do it. What's the synclavier role in
the recording process?

It didn't take long for John Kennedy Jr.'s death to become fodder for the
media's tragedy industry, shattering the records set by Princess Diana's demise.
But while the press shifted into wretched-excess mode, The New York Times never
led the paper with the story - a decision displaying either remarkable restraint
or cultural cluelessness.
"We avoided the end-of-the-world mega-headlines that characterized some
newspapers and the kind of overwrought prose that characterized some copy," says
Managing Editor Bill Keller. "I'm personally proud we didn't wallow in the
'Curse of the Kennedys' and 'America's Prince,' as if it were the death of a
president.
"To make it the lead of the paper would signify a kind of importance to the
event that wasn't really there." Still, Keller says, "we've second-guessed
ourselves back and forth on that over the last few days."
No sooner had the shock of last weekend's plane crash worn off than the public
was inundated by hype, blunders, death music and all manner of blabbermouths-few
of whom knew Kennedy well-filling the great gaping maw of airtime on CNN, MSNBC
and Fox News Channel. With ratings up six- and seven-fold, there was no penalty
for being maudlin. Over blurry, long-range shots of a Navy destroyer,
correspondents mused about "the ocean's embrace," and how Kennedy and his wife
"are now together for eternity," and "how much can this family take?"
But how much can viewers take? Are we entering a new era of celebrity deaths?
Will there be a JFK Channel where he keeps dying forever?
In the first six days, says the Center for Media and Public Affairs, the ABC,
CBS and NBC evening newscasts ran 27 percent more stories on Kennedy's death
(131 pieces) than they did during the first week of Diana's passing. And the
major newsmagazines - "Dateline," "60 Minutes," "20/20," "48 Hours" - devoted a
staggering 7 hours 51 minutes to the subject.
Mistakes, meanwhile, were made. MSNBC reported - many hours before it happened -
that Kennedy's body had been recovered from the plane wreckage and brought
aboard a Navy ship. An MSNBC anchor attributed the account to "a senior
government official," while acknowledging confusion that the Associated Press
had just retracted a similar account.
The AP bulletin moved at 1:47 p.m. and was corrected 32 minutes later. AP
Managing Editor Jonathan Wolman says one of his reporters got bad information
from an official involved in the Navy effort, while another had a
"miscommunication" with a Kennedy family spokesman who appeared to be confirming
the account. "We shouldn't have used it in the first place," Wolman says.
The larger question is whether the media have greatly inflated this story as a
Camelot melodrama or are merely catering to the public's grief. Whatever the
verdict, nearly everyone - even those who are nauseated by the over-coverage -
is still talking about the tragedy.
Footnote:
George magazine staffers, who have refused to speak publicly about their friend,
got a second shock two days after the death when an emissary from publisher
Hachette Filipacchi told them to put out only the next two issues-which sounded
like they would be the last.

where you look at it. If you saw Shrek live somewhere around 93 or 94 and you liked
it, go and get his latest "Yo, I killed ..." CD with the material from this time. I
think listening to Shrek is somewhat of a good experience of how different things
can be. Its not that one thing naturally follows another in a certain way. I like
this way of treating a musical concept.
Just my short opinion on some music worth listening to.

I saw Shrek around that time (it was a KF tour) and was very disappointed. Marc
played great but I thought that it was a little bit short on musical ideas (to
say it nicely). In fact, because of that performance, I kind of ignored him for
a while.

Not only that one, but hearing Marc repeating at nauseum "And the wind cries
Mary" is also painful. The first one is also quite bad (I am not surprised
that Jon gave up after only 10mn).

Anyway, I like Ribot (post-Shrek) a lot but I think that Shrek is the weakest
of his production. Maybe if he was not singing...

it's on Phillips Brazil, and is definitely stocked by Other Music
(www.othermusic.com) for 75 bucks, and usually by Dusty Groove
(www.dustygroove.com), probably for less. it's five CDs which are all
available individually, the Tropicalia disc, and albums by Caetano Veloso,
Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Os Mutantes, all from around 1969 and all
produced by Duprat. personally, I'd just buy the Gil, Veloso and Tropicalia
discs separately, but I'm not sure what extras, if any, come with the box set.

I've sort of avoided this new Ribot, but I didn't think the version of "Yo! I Killed Your
God" on 'Requiem For What's-His-Name' was too terrible.

The Ribot disc I really couldn't take was the Cubanos Postizos. I can understand someone
not liking Ribot's voice or lyrics, but when he starts singing in Spanish with that
godawful accent... and Anthony Coleman's little toy organ.... Anyway, I was pretty
dissapointed with that one.

I do really like the two Rootless Cosmopolitans discs and 'Shoe String Symphonettes' and
could listen to him play with Tom Waits forever.
