first impressions: Spillane/Godard contains two pretty good long pieces from
1985-86. I already had Spillane (this version is supposedly remastered, but I
haven't bothered comparing the two. it is the exact length of the first
one.), but I hadn't heard Godard before, and I liked it a lot on first

String Quartets didn't make much of an impact on me on my first listen, so
I'll reserve comment.
I also bought the live Shrek/Marc Ribot on Tzadik, partially because I'm a
big fan of recent Ribot and had never heard Shrek, and because someone on
this list raved about it recently. well, I thought it was pretty terrible. I
had to turn it off after ten minutes; it consists of poorly recorded music,
with fairly inane rantings by Ribot on top. I suppose the title of "Yo! I
Killed Your God" should have tipped me off.

Uggh, I guess that was me. I wouldn't say I raved about it, because
I thought I mentioned that there
is a lot off stuff that could or should have been edited out. But I
thought that there were at least parts of it, mostly the instrumentals,
that were really good. Plus, I kind of liked the sound quality. I
have to listen to it with the player on program or a remote nearby.
But you're right about the Tzadik quality control level being a little low
at times, and the discs are often too short for the price. I don't think
it has gotten worse recently, they've had occasional stinkers ever since
the beginning, although I guess it depends on what you're looking for.
As for the Zorn/Jazziz thing, its a nice article, but they seem to have
countered it by including as much from the other end (smooth jazz,
commercial vocals) as possible. And those reviews are pretty airbrushed
as well. Sorry to the JAzziz people on this list for the negative
comments...

I totally agree with you on that. I doubt that the content of this record
really deserved to be put out. For me, it documents Marc at his worst. The
piece where he is counting is, I think, really embarrassing.

^^^^^^^
I would not say that. Tzadik is a label that takes risks, and the negative side
of taking risks it that you can make mistakes (or at least what can appear as
mistakes). I think that the quality is still high and they are not affraid to
put out records by mavericks or highly idiosyncrac individuals.

I am ashamed to say that I never really tried Ferrari until I bought that one.
Not knowing anything else by him, it was hard to really make a judgement, but
it is true that I was not too crazy about it.
Did you try the newly reissued INTERRUPTEUR/TAUTOLOGOS 3 on Blue Chopsticks?
Tautologos belongs to Ferrari's "heroic" period and I will finally be able to
check it after all these years (during which I was too stupid to buy the
vinyl).

Hello,
I picked up the _Godard/Spillane_ reissue yesterday and was wondering what
Zorn/Tzadik plans to do with the other 2 pieces that were on the original
Nonesuch _Spillane_ CD. I know that "Forbidden Fruit" is also available
on _Winter Was Hard_ by the Kronos 4tet but I don't believe that "Two-Lane
Highway" is available anywhere else.
I'd really like to know if there are any plans for Tzadik reissues of
these 2 tracks, especially considering that _Spillane_ seems to have gone
out of print.

What I regret the most is that Zorn did not add a fourth track:
The astounding cover of Monk's Shuffle Boil
that these !@%$@%#% at A&M Records did not feel necessary to keep when they
released the CD version of THAT'S THE WAY I FEEL NOW.

yup, it's very good. the Ferrari to start with, at least on CD, is Presque
Rien (INA-GRM). the Blue Chopsticks one, which is a reissue of an EMI LP from
1970, and the BVHaast one are also preferable to the Tzadik one, which I
didn't get much out of at all.

I have his other three CDs, but not the Tzadik one. I haven't played any of
them in a while, but I remember them as quirky electroacoustic music, and
generally very accomplished. of the three I have, I'd suggest Ground (OO
Disc), then Haramand Plane (What Next?). I didn't think Lattice (CRI) was
quite as good as those two, and the description I read of the Tzadik one made
it seem a bit too much like posthumous dregs for my taste, especially given
my dwindling confidence in the label.

without a doubt to start "with the best" kirk try first the Atlantic peri=

Subject: recent discoveries
just thought I'd share a few records that have been rocking my world lately:
Burkhard Stangl's Recital (Durian).
Durian is a Vienna-based improv label run by Werner Dafeldecker (Polwechsel,
Orchester 33 1/3). although it's been around for a few years, it just started
being distributed in the US for the first time, by Dutch East India
(www.dutch-east.com, and you can now order directly from them). Stangl's solo
disc (mostly guitar with a bit of piano sprinkled in) is the most exciting
one I've found so far. his approach reminded me of the solo Radu Malfatti
record on Edition Wandelweisser more than anything else, in its attention to
sparse detail and texture. a very exciting record, at least for me.
Gilberto Gil-Gilberto Gil and Cerebro Eletronico (Polygram Brazil and Japan,
respectively).
quite honestly, outside of Caetano Veloso, most of my ventures into Brazilian
music and tropicalia have been fairly disappointing. I find that the language
barrier, on what is usually singer/songwriter material, tends to keep me from
doing more than appreciating it from afar. the music on these records,
though, is pretty remarkable, especially Cerebro Eletronico. Rogerio Duprat's
influence is deeply felt throughout CE, especially on the stunner that closes
the disc, Objeto Semi-Identificado. Duprat was the producer of most of the
classic early Tropicalia records, including all five in the fairly
well-distributed CD box set. he studied at Darmstadt in the early sixties,
and he brings that electronic/concrete influence here, more than on most of
the other records I've heard produced by him. Dusty Groove
(www.dustygroove.com) usually stocks this stuff, but it doesn't seem to be in
their catalog right now, but I'm sure if you hunt a bit, you can find these,
although they're not cheap.
No Neck Blues Band-The Birth Of Both Worlds (Sound@One).
with the possible exception of Loren Mazzacane, I go to more No Neck Blues
Band concerts than any other artist. the NNCK, as they prefer to abbreviate
it, are seven or eight guys and one woman, based in NYC. their current base
of operations is a loft in Harlem, where they play periodic, unpublicized,
semi-private concerts, usually including four or five bands in a night.
sometimes these consist of bands no one's heard of, with names like Sunburned
Hand Of The Man. I've also seen everyone from John Fahey to Test to Lee
Ranaldo to Loren Mazzacane perform in their space. almost all of them are
untrained musicians, with a few exceptions (Dave Nuss, Matt Heyner), but
they've been jamming together for years, and have developed a unique power,
which can be exhilarating to witness when they're on, which is more and more
lately. this double CD is a document of two free, outdoor concerts from 1998,
one in Boston, one in NYC, both of which were prematurely ended by the
police. unfortunately, since the original plan for these shows was probably
to play for five or six hours (as they did at the outdoor show that I
attended earlier this year), the CDs are merely a taste of what was hopefully
to come later on. some may find these a touch amateurish, and they're
certainly no substitute for seeing them live, but I've been really getting
into them. it's a way overused comparison at this point, mostly by people who
have no idea what they're talking about, but I think the NNCK capture the
spirit of krautrock, specifically Can-era Tago Mago and Amon Duul I, more
than any other band in the world right now, with the possible exception of
the Turkish band Zen. the double LP just released simultaneously with this
isn't as good as the CDs; there's no overlap in material. the NNCK just
recorded a record for John Fahey's Revenant label, and I believe they're
going to tour with Royal Trux, so check them out if they come to your town.
available through Forced Exposure (www.fe.org).
