apparantly the zorn interview in jazziz 8/99 is quite interesting...
does someone if it is available in germany? if not, are there
any ideas on how to transfer a copy? thanks for any suggestions!
i am not absolutely sure whether it was mentioned already,
but masada performed *free* on the milano music festival
june 19th 1999. it was the third time i saw them (after
1994/1995) and i was almost overwhelmed - fascinating music,
played very well, with a lot of interaction and communication between
the musicians.
i already liked the earlier masada a lot, but i think they improved.
in addition, there was no press problem, only music (and some
italian people still using their mobile phones...). in fact, jz seemed
to be really relaxed and enjoying the nice open-air atmosphere.

The only album under Little's name that Dolphy appears on is Out
Front (on Candid) - highly recommended .. there are three alternate
takes, two of them on the Candid Dolphy compilation ... but Little's
Victory and Sorrow, aka Looking Ahead, now rereleased as Booker
Little and Friend is even better (despite the absence of Dolphy and
Roach).
They're also heard together on Roach's Percussion Bitter Sweet
(impulse) - also highly recommended.
And: on 4 or 5 tracks of Dolphy's Far Cry (Prestige/OJC), which many
people rave about, tho' I'd rather steer you towards the 2- and-a
quarter hours of Live At The Five Spot, which is only sensibly
collected on the Complete Dolphy Prestige Box, but which has been out
in meagre 30-40 minute doses (vols 1-3) on OJC releases.
A little Booker goes a long way.

I've been looking at Shiurba's Limited Sedition label website, and the
releases look great, though I can't say why because there are no "blurbs".
Blurbs can sure be silly, especially with books, since every release is the
new masterpiece, the first of its kind, the epitome of its art, etc etc ad
nauseum. But in lieu of having hip friends to tell me what the Ltd Sedition
releases are "like", I might need to rely on descrtiptions fro you guys.
For example, I'm intrigued by this new Robair solo disc. What's it like?
And other recent releases---could someone dexcribe and/or recommend them?
Also: this guy, 99 Hooker: who is he? other than Bible Launcher, I am not
at all familiar with his work. Does he do electronic stuff live as well?
Also: I'm listening to the new Autechre, and I think it may be my favorite
yet. I really, really like it; it seems, somehow, to morph faster than the
others I've heard. I really only listen to, say, Squarepusher and Autechre,
electronically speaking, but I think this new EP7 is remarkably good,
mind-altering even. (Note: it is NOT an EP.)

Does anybody else find this off-putting? Buckethead was funny a
few years ago, for about 60 minutes, but if he's still doing his faux
shred metal thing (which he was last time I heard him) then surely
it's time he hung up the bucket?

I'll have to agree with you on this one. I saw him a few months back and
he barely played a lick. It was mostly him swinging his guitar around for
an hour or so. Give me a bucket and point me in the right direction. I
think I can do that.

Only one I know of under Booker's name was Out Front on Candid. It also
features Max Roach, Julian Priester, Don Friedman and Ron Carter/Art
Davis --more or less Max's group of the day.
Dolphy and Little also both appear on two other excellent Roach albums
- -- Percussion BitterSweet (Impulse) and We Insist, Freedom Now (first
Candid than CBS). Again these are vinyl issues. I know PBS is out again,
but aren't sure of the status of WI,FN.

Would anyone have an english translation of the Japanese text that was
included on an insert in Masada 1 "Alef"? It was a little folded
piece of paper with the word Masada printed on the outside and Japanese text
on the inside that I believe talks about Masada and then lists the album track
titles for the first four albums Alef, Beit, Gimel and Dalet.
If anyone has an english translation of this text, could you please
e-mail it to me? I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

I actually think that Buckethead has improved greatly with age. Some of
the earlier releases, especially the 2CD on Avant, were interesting to
listen to once or twice but then kinda lost my interest. Albums such as
_Colma_ have been much more musical.

From: Steve Smith <ssmith36@sprynet.com>
Subject: Limited Sedition piece from Jazziz May 1999
Since there has been a small flurry of inquiries about the Limited
Sedition CD label, rather than post a bunch of individual answers, let
me post the brief article I wrote (and Dante edited) that ran in Jazziz
back in May:
Order Up... Burnt CDs for Five
by Steve Smith
Jazziz, May 1999
Bay Area guitarist and free-improvisor John Shiurba hit upon the idea of
his new Limited Sedition record label soon after buying a CD burner last
year. "I just wanted to put out CDs of my music, and music that I think
is worthy," he explains. "But the idea of shopping tapes of this kind
of music to labels seemed like a dead end. When the CD writer opened
the door to small editions, it just occured to me that here was the
perfect medium for improvised music. If you have an audience of five
people, then you can make five CDs and not have a closet full of
aluminum coasters."
Free improvisation and the recording industry have endured a troubled
union from the beginning. Improvisation is a fleeting mode of musical
communication, felt by many to exist purely in the moment of creation,
and to be resistant to documentation. And the audience for the music is
so comparatively small that it renders recording improv too costly for
most record companies, anyway.
But the falling costs of home-recording technologies has enabled less
marketable musicians to document their work and to sell it to
enthusiasts in a creative and cost-effective way. Shiurba's Limited
Sedition (www.sfo.com/~shiurba/sedition.html), for example, documents
his own music and that of his fellow Bay Area improvisors on recordable
CD (or CD-R).
Such a D.I.Y. approach is not without precedent. In 1973, British
guitarist Derek Bailey released a series of four solo-guitar recordings
on reel-to-reel tape, making individual custom copies to order. (These
rare recordings were issued on CD as 'Incus Taps' on the Organ of Corti
label in 1996.) But Shiurba is among the first to devote an entire
record label of strictly limited, numbered editions of well under 100
copies that will never be re-pressed. He has released eight
hand-designed recordings since founding Limited Sedition last July. His
production costs average around four dollars per disc. This, coupled
with grassroots promotion via the Internet, helps him turn modest
profits into new recordings quickly, in order to keep pace with the
rapid evolution of the music and its creators.
Alrady, Shiurba is not alone. Saxophonist David Gross has begun to
release limited-edition CD-Rs of music recorded live at the Zeitgeist
Gallery in Cambridge, Massachusetts on his Tautology label
(members.aol.com/Tautology3). And Splatter Trio percussionist Gino
Robair, who runs the more conventional Rastascan label
(www.rastascan.com), has taken the notion a step further, creating
individual "private concert" releases on CD-R. "They're more than just
a live improv," Robair explains. "I do a bit of digital hacking on the
material before burning a CD-R. They're one of a kind, and I've made
them to order. I think this is the way that many improvisors will be
working very soon."
Beyond the obvious benefit of low overhead, this approach to recording
allows an artist to explore even the most unlikely creative impulse.
Saxophonist Dan Plonsey gave Shiurba a whimsical solo-oboe recording
made on the day he purchased the instrument. And Robair, who has played
on two Limited Sedition releases and compiled a disc of Splatter Trio
rarities for the label as well, has plans for an album of music
performed entirely on... Styrofoam? "A handful of Styrofoam and a bow
and that's it," says Robair. "You can see why we need a label like
Limited Sedition."

Subject: Limited Sedition Review-Haiku
Since my article for Jazziz (reprinted on the Zornlist this evening)
didn't actually include much in the way of opinion about what the music
sounds like, I humbly offer the following:
LIMITED SEDITION REVIEW-HAIKU
by Steve Smith (in a puckish mood)
July 22, 1999 (around 10:20 to 10:40 p.m.)
Limited Sedition 1 - Shiurba/Rosenburg/Robair: 'Bubble & Squeak'
Drums, guitar and reeds
Played by Bay Area guys
Euro-improv rules
Limited Sedition 2 - Gelb/Kihlstedt/Shiurba/Sperry: 'Smoking Balance'
Sound of purring strings
Shakuhachi blows it East
Now it's out of print
Limited Sedition 3 - Ingalls/Perkis/Robair/Shiurba: 'The Matthew Sperry
Trio'
Continental drift
Clarinet meets AMM
Sperry wasn't there
Limited Sedition 4 - 99 Hooker/Thomas Scandura: 'Cygnus Adapter'
Whirling balls of fire
Vandermark Generator
Sound is just so-so
Limited Sedition 5 - Boisen/Shiurba: 'Uncle'
Scrape of strangled strings
Frith, Cline, Kaiser, Bailey sounds
Two guitars make noise
Limited Sedition 6 - Dan Plonsey: 'Understanding Human Behavio'
Wacky improv disc
Dan blows his oboe debut
Cheap keyboards make fun
Limited Sedition 7 - Splatter Trio: 'Splatterarities'
U.S. improv kings
Not known well enough at all
(My drums guest on -12-)
That's all. Not a dud among the batch I've bought so far, just true
musical exploration in the best sense. Gotta get those other seven
LtdSed discs, muy pronto. (Hey, John, hold one of each for me...)

Hi all,
I found this on the Downtown Music Gallery website:
New releases for july
JOHN ZORN-Godard/Spillane (Tzadik 7324) excellent remasters of two
great tribute pieces with an all-star cast of Frith, Frisell, Marclay,
Quine, John Lurie... plus a rare Christmas track-"Blue Noel"! $14.
The Tzadik site doesn't mention this one, not even for the
august/september releases. Any news?

All I know is that it is also listed in the Forced Exposure web site. Not
only Spillane/Goddard, but The String Quartets CD as well. They had it
available for purchase since last week. Most likely taking orders for
when the discs arrived at the store. Supposedly The String Quartets came
out on tuesday. I don't know the release date for Spillane/Goddard.

DMG has them both for sale now.
first impressions: Spillane/Godard contains two pretty good long pieces from
1985-86. I already had Spillane (this version is supposedly remastered, but I
haven't bothered comparing the two. it is the exact length of the first
one.), but I hadn't heard Godard before, and I liked it a lot on first
listen. recommended.
String Quartets didn't make much of an impact on me on my first listen, so
I'll reserve comment.
I also bought the live Shrek/Marc Ribot on Tzadik, partially because I'm a
big fan of recent Ribot and had never heard Shrek, and because someone on
this list raved about it recently. well, I thought it was pretty terrible. I
had to turn it off after ten minutes; it consists of poorly recorded music,
with fairly inane rantings by Ribot on top. I suppose the title of "Yo! I
Killed Your God" should have tipped me off.
anyone else think the quality control over at Tzadik HQ is getting a little
dubious? the double Haino with Laswell and Ali is hands down the worst thing
I've ever heard from him, and the Luc Ferrari they did is also the low point
I've heard from him.
as always, just my opinions.
