To clear it up, it was indeed Fujii who played the two duets with Zorn at
Tonic. She was hanging around and was asked to play to "save [Zorn's] ass"
(as was Ravi Coltrane & Briggan Krauss)... Her set last Friday night with her
big band was amazing too.

Subject: Avant/DIW Recommendations?
Hello,
I am currently scooping up tons of imports at a Tower sale going on right
now. All cd's $13.99.
I am a fan of Marc Ribot, Zorn, Frith, Chadbourne, Horvitz, Kang, Ullmer,
Frisell, Bailey, Lacy and the likes...
I already have lots of the Avant/DIW releases by these and other artists.
Does anyone have any import releases that are special to them that they
could recommend?
My top f0ur recommendations right now are-
1. Marc Ribot- SHREK (one tweaked ass piece of guitar rock)
2. Masada- Four (mega short and energetic Masada work)
3. Dying Ground (Heavy Heavy violin album? Kang and Hideki)
4. James Blood Ullmer- Tales of Captain Black (essential harmolodic madness)

Is this sale across the chain or only at one store? I was at the Tower in
Rockville, MD last night and didn't see any mention of it.

Actually, that's pretty much how it happened for me, believe it or not. Or,
to put it more accurately, Steely Dan --> Chuck --> Miles. Surely some of
the people on this list first heard of Zorn through Bill Laswell, Mr.
Bungle, or heck, maybe even Half Japanese. Never underestimate the power of
pop. Or "smooth jazz" [blech], for that matter. Well, maybe not the latter.
(The first time I heard Zorn was from a "Spillane" excerpt on that
Elektra/Nonesuch comp, "Late in the 20th Century" -- I'm so grateful I
bought that album, as it was my first exposure as well to the Kronos
Quartet, Glass and Reich as well...)

The sale here in Hawaii only lasted from 7/1-7/5. I picked up The first
Arcana w/ Derek Bailey, Joey Baron's Crack shot and the Baron disc w/
Keiji Haino for 13.99 each. Also found Harras for 50% off in the bargain
bin at Borders.

Has Sean Lennon done anything worthwhile? (Outside Cibo Matto.) Has he
released a solo record yet, and if so, how is it. I saw a gig of his a
couple of years ago, playing with the girls from Cibo Matto, and was
unimpressed. He sang out of tune, and Miho doesn't belong behind a drum kit.

I haven't heard his solo work, but I like his playing with his mother
a lot. It fits in well, if not particularly memorable on its own,
providing a good context for her. Check out especially "Franklin
Summer" from their "Rising Mixes" EP.

I like quite a bit his record INTO THE SUN. It is fairly self-conscious
and his voice sometimes almost sounds feminine. There is a fragile quality
in it and a very personal vision. In short, it is a very sweet record with a
few downtowners (which does not hurt :-).
I am just thinking about how high expectations are for John Lennon's son
and I am afraid that the heavy machinery of big record business will
eat him and throw him away before letting him accomplish what I think he can.
Fortunately, he has been moving very carefully, and taking his time. Time
will show us.
But improv addicts and free-jazz die-hard can save some money by sticking to
their usual brand of tea.
Patrice.

I realize this is _the Zorn List_, but just for giggles:
For those of you who like the outrageousness of, say, Zorn's Naked City or
CAT O' NINE TAILS, or Mr. Bungle, and for those of you who can appreciate
his comments about geeting to the marrow of a genre and subverting, or
better---coaxing it forth; to you, I suggest the John Spencer Blues
Explosion. Not exactly cutting-edge news, but more fun than this too-young
fogey has had in a while with pop. Damn. Too bad I haven't seen them live.
Fans of Cibo Matto and Spencer might enjoy the band Butter 08, who have at
least one record out (Yuka and the other girl from CM, a couple guys from
JSBE). More outrageous crazy-pop action, with the same kind of strangeness
that make John Lee Hooker a big-time favorite of mine. Or Tom Waits.

I see and take your point. I myself may be a departure from the norm, but it was
wanting to be the drummer in Kiss that led me to music in the first place. Peter
Criss name-dropped Gene Krupa, which make me check out big band jazz (Krupa led to
Rich and finally to the awesome Bellson). And school percussion lessons exposed me
to... gasp... Spyro Gyra, which somehow led me to electric Miles, which led me to
acoustic Miles and to Coltrane, which led me to Ornette and Cecil. So in theory it
certainly *can* happen.
In much the same sense, wanting to be Peter Criss led me into the school music
program in the first place, so my indoctrination in classical music also stems from
the same lust for greasepaint and flashpots.
And what led me to Zorn? Hal Wilner's Monk and Weill tributes, and that famous
cover story in Option circa 1986.

Hey, good memory, Ben! And I *still* maintain that it's a fine idea for the

Chaim Witz" - YOU WANTED THE BEST - YOU *GOT* THE BEST!!! Think of the

Last month, there really was something for everyone at (musings),
what with our John Wolf Brennan special, reviews from some
adventurous new labels and our regular selection of non-standard
releases. Due to the sheer quantity of stuff that we put up, coupled
with the usual "technical problems" :) it's being run for another
couple of weeks, so if you've not been back for a while, come and
get 'em while they're hot.
Just to whet your appetite, we have releases from relatively new
labels Takla, Unsound Automatic, True Muze and Newsonic. Free
jazz, avant rock, conceptual punk, comprovisation; it's all there.
There are also reviews of discs featuring prepared guitar wizard
Gilbert Isbin, excellent electro-noise improvisors Modisti,
shakuhachi innovator Philip Gelb (with, among others, Pauline
Oliveros), free funkateers The One King Poets, and the
proceedings of Denmark's Intuitive Music Conference 1998.
Thanks for listening, and the usual (but no less heartfelt) apologies
for x-postings,

so i'm in boston this past week and i saw a cd that had the same lineup but

RRP is my favorite among his group works, but my all-time fave Kirk is on his
"Natural Black Inventions: Root Strata", a virtual solo album (there's a teeny
bit of piano and percussion by others) released on Atlantic in 1972, but
currently available as one disc of the 3CD set "Dog Years in the Fourth Ring" on
32Jazz. Some amazing, earthy playing therein.
Also great are 'The Inflated Tear', 'Volunteered Slavery', 'Bright Moments' and
'Blacknuss'.
Worth hearing for some moments, if not essential: 'Now Please Don't You Cry,
Beautiful Edith', 'Other Folks Music' and 'The Case of the Three-Sided Dream
in...." whatever the rest of that title is (he plays some reed-trumpet on this
one).
And, of course, his work in Mingus' groups.
Still under-rated because of his perceived gimmickry but, imho, at his best, one
of the finest reed players ever.

á á Here's another bit about the Email Legislation...
Dear Internet Subscriber:
Please read the following carefully if you intend to
stay online and continue using email: The last few
months have revealed an alarming trend in the
Government of the United States attempting to quietly
push through legislation that will affect your use of
the Internet. Under proposed legislation the U.S.
Postal Service will be attempting to bilk email users
out of "alternate postage fees". Bill 602P will permit
the Federal Govt to charge a 5 cent surcharge on
every email delivered, by billing Internet Service
Providers at source. The consumer would then be
billed in turn by the ISP. Washington D.C. lawyer
Richard Stepp is
working without pay to prevent this legislation from
becoming law. The U.S. Postal Service is claiming that
lost revenue due to the proliferation of email is
costing nearly $230,000,000 in revenue per year. You
may have noticed their recent ad campaign "There is
nothing like a letter". Since the average citizen
received about 10 pieces of email per day in 1998, the
cost to the typical individual would be an additional
50 cents per day, or over $180 dollars per year, above
and beyond their regular Internet costs. Note that
this would be money paid directly to the U.S. Postal
Service for a service they do not even provide. The
whole point of the Internet is democracy and
non-interference. If the federal government is
permitted to tamper with our
liberties by adding a surcharge to email, who knows
where it will end. You are already paying an
exorbitant price for snail mail because of bureacratic
efficiency. It currently takes up to 6 days for a
letter to be
delivered from New York to Buffalo. If the U.S. Postal
Service is allowed to tinker with email, it will mark
the end of the "free" Internet in the United States.
One congressman, Tony Schnell (r) has even suggested a
"twenty to forty dollar per month surcharge on all
Internet service" above and beyond the government's
proposed email charges. Note that most of the major
newspapers have ignored the story, the only exception
being the Washingtonian which called the idea of email
surcharge "a useful concept who's time has come"
March 6th 1999 Editorial) Don't sit by and watch your
freedoms erode away!
Send this email to all Americans on your list and tell
your friends and relatives to write to their
congressman and say "No!" to Bill 602P.
