Kick it, Nirav! You've got at least as much to say as any old crotchet that's
still lamenting the closing of the five spot! I used to do some music
journalism, now I'm in daily news coverage. my advice to you is listen to the
music and be honest about what you think. don't try to fake like you know things
you don't because people will see through that. one of the best parts about the
zine revolution is it has allowed writers to approach reviews by saying things
like "i never heard of this, but my older brother used to listen to the
minutemen, and that's what this reminds me of." it's your insight, not your
factual knowledge, that makes a review interesting.
>>>At the moment, I'm listeing to the Vandermark 5's Simpatico with the intetion
of reviewing it. I write for a biggish independant music magazine (Ink19) and
I'm wondering if i can do this disc justice. I'm but a wee 17 year old, and I'm
faced with the dilemna of lettiing this cd go to someone else who (most likely)
knows more about jazz than me, or just to step up, and try to feel this one out.
I'm going with the latter, but I hesitiate, and think, "Shouldn't I try to give
the artist the best exposure I can?" Ah well, lets hope no one can see through
my paltry attempts at music journalism.

I think your reviewing the CD is OK as long as you come clean at the outset
of the review (as you did here) regarding the limitations of your own
experience thus far with Vandermark and/or related music. In other words,
what you should do is definitely let everyone "see through" to who you are at
the moment. And also, evocative and accurate discriptions of the music become
more important than ever if you can't provide an assessment of the music in a
historical or stylistic context.

Anyone heard of an album by Il Gruppo (I assume this is an Italian new
music ensemble) called "Private Sea of Dreams"? On it, they perform an
otherwise-unknown-to-me Rzewski composition called "Lip Service"
(one's imagination reels). Don't know what else might be included.
Came across it in a reference on the Kalvos and Damien page, an
interesting new music site, btw.
Thanks.

around to listening to all of the other songs yet, but
the ones I've heard (I-O, KAK, Stimbox, Ion Es) are
all good.

D'oh! I forgot about that one. Ive seen them before, they've played a few
gigs in NY. There are quite a few other groups on the bill that havent
played NY however. Like Ponga-- or maybe they played here and I just missed

I love "Pierres Sacrees" and most of what Dumitrescu's written.
Dumitrescu's label, Edition Modern, has released some 13 volumes of his work
(many of which are split with the not-as-interesting Ana-Maria Avram). I would
highly recommend picking up EDMN 1001 (Medium III, etc.) and EDMN 1005 (Galaxy,
etc.). All Dumitrescu and some of his best stuff, I think. Amazing.

no, Flayed, which is Prevost's contribution to this disc, is a lot closer to
the music of Organum than it is to AMM.
some of the earlier AMM releases (The Crypt, AMMusic 1966, the first disc of
Laminal) are very dense, but Prevost is always just one element of the mix,
which inevitably is more varied with the addition of Keith Rowe on prepared
guitar and John Tilbury on piano. and most of the more recent output of AMM
(Newfoundland, Allentown, From A Strange Place) could be described as fairly
spacious and beautiful, at least by me.
Flayed/Crux isn't really the best Organum or Prevost on disc. I'd suggest
Loci Of Change (Matchless) for solo Prevost and the compilation Volume 1
(Robot) for Organum, although I haven't yet heard the one just released last
week.

Hee hee hee! Thanks, Tom.

That sounds about right. Chris Speed speaks extremely highly of Holly, and she
has worked, as has been mentioned, in one of Cuong Vu's recent groups. I caught
her at the Knit some time back on a triple bill with Speed's yeah, no and a solo
bass-and-effects set by Skuli Sverrisson... Holly attracted a mostly-female
audience that at least tolerated the sets by Speed and Sverrisson. And I heard
her sing with Cuong Vu at Tonic some time later, and this was fairly impressive.
> I was disapointed when I heard the stuff she

I understand what you're saying. But in this case, judging from the set I heard
at the Knit, the pop stuff would seem to be rather close to her heart - it was a
pretty straightforward affair - and it's not necessarily the case that she's
"selling out" to a major label to record such material Maybe that's just the
music she "feels" the way we feel the outer fringes. And there would seem to be
ample precedent of artists who enjoyed, and even dabbled or took part in, music
considerably more avant-garde than their own, from John Lennon to Sean Lennon.
And to my mind that's not entirely regrettable. It is not a bad thing to have
pop artists who are willing and able to lead listeners to more challenging fare.
I'd love to think, for example, that a Sean Lennon or Cibo Matto record might
lead someone to Dave Douglas, and so on.

Considering I just saw her play solo here in Toronto a couple of weeks
ago and she seemed to be pretty much in the Bill Evans/Keith Jarett
school, Satoko doesn't seem like a Zornie.
Perhaps (and more likely) it was Yuko Fujiyama, who has recorded with
such people as Sabir Mateen, Daniel Carter and Susie Ibarra.

Right, exactly. Just the way Chuck Mangione records have lead people to
Miles Davis and then Roy Campbell and Kenny G. discs have brought people
to John Coltrane and Charles Gayle. Not to mention the thousands of
Billy Joel fans who now jam Cecil Taylor concerts.

From the above I guess that Ken has not the slightest clue who Sean and
Cibo Matto are. But (correct me if I am wrong) that does not prevent him
from this cheap shot :-).
Yes Ken, there are interesting things done these days in non-jazz music
(but I am afraid that you might interpret the last pair of words as an
oxymoron).
