It's the Cecil Taylor curse I tell ya!!....seriously though,
after seeing Cecil a few times, I'm beginning to think that that kind
of stuff is part of his concept. I spent a couple of nights around
1987 at the old Carlos 1 club, trying to spur Cecil's interest in a
collaboration w/Sonny Sharrock.
He had a potentially killer band w/ The rev Frank Wright, Karen
Borca, William Parker...but what a sonic disaster! Cecil opened one
set with a long solo piece...while the restaraunts background music
was still playing, and was not shut off until well into the piece,
Cecil didn't seem to bat an eyelash. The Rev. Wright seemed to be in
a state of disrepair, Karen Borca played her Bassoon next to an amp
that had the wire hanging off, disconnected (prompting Sonny to
nickname her Linda MaCartney....;-). and the houses attempt at
miking/amplification was atrocious.
Has Anyone seen a well mixed, well presented CT gig?

I've finally decided to take the axe to the last of my Vinyl
collection, as well as some CD's, tapes, periodicals and memorabilia
that's cramping my living space....so anyone interested in such stuff
as the Ogun label material, Recommended records, Keith Tippett,
Frith, Sharrock, a bit of zorn etc... and a whole bunch more obscure
and mostly out-of-print stuff should check out my sale pages at;
www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Venue/4306/garage/index.html
I think the prices are fair(at least compared to what I've
seen on the net and in used shops),
and I expect the good stuff to go fast. and hey...where else are you
going to find an Art Bears single?
Thanks,

Yes, Bennik is ok in small doses. But, unfortunately, the schtick you
saw in Vancouver is his usual "show". I've seen him two or three times
and find what is interesting the first couple of run throughs, becomes
vaudeville when it's done too often.
Plimley is a quirky, humorous, experimental pianist who has recorded in a
variety of settings. He has a new, bang-up trio session on Victo (with
Lisle Ellis-b and Scott Amedola-d) called Safe Cracker and is about to
record a solo piano disc of Zappa material for hatArt.
BTW what happend to Plimley's other trio? He was supposed to play in
Vancouver with William Parker and Gerry Hemingway? Was what you saw an
addendum or a replacement?
Additionally, it would seem that improv keeps you young. Han is a lot
closer to 60 than 50.

Well if we have to have bragging rights, I'll jump right iere. My wife,
besides her other attributes is a talented photographer. One of his
specialities (guess why) is jazz/improv musicians in performance, work
that has impressed among others Barry Guy, Gerry Hemingway, David Murray,
Kidd Jordan, Domenic Duval, Mario Schiano, John Butcher and Burton Greene.
If you want to see an example of her work check John Butcher's entry in
his section of the European Free Improvisers Page or the pix on his new
CD with Georg Graewe on Nuscope.
Come to think of it, if anyone's looking for an excellent photo of some
musican, for a present or to use on a CD, e-mail me and I can send you
her list. Her prices for reproductions are quite reasonable.

sure. he sounded great at a couple of solo sets at the Knitting Factory over
the last few years. and also at the Vanguard a few years back, with a band
including Tristan Honsinger, Harry Sjostrom, and I can't remember who else.

My wife can't stand listening to the likes of Cecil Taylor on
recordings, but put her next to me in the front row face to face with
the master and her mouth's hanging open and she's covered with
gooseflesh. She thoroughly enjoys every performance I (no longer have
to) drag her to.

Yes i know of this problem.
During the time I was not on the zornlist.... Yves Dewulf (my belgian buddy
in crime..... hi Yves) mentioned the problems concerning the extreme label.
I have to admit it, I was quite in schock when I heard the news.... what
about the 500$ that was paid? Anyway, I contacted the labelowner on his
private email address, and he did admit that he was not responding to his
emails. Anyway he is back on track now, and apologized for being absent. He
told me he had to leave for some time because of personal reasons (whatever
that might be).
As a lot of people, I am looking forward seeing the release of that box
Best wishes

No doubt part of my delight at the show was that I had no idea what to
expect. Aside from the schtick though, I thought the music stood well on
its own. Plimley and Bennink are a very sympathetic pair, and Cohen
certainly kept up as well. OK, Bennink is pretty over-the-top. Humor
definitely has a place on stage though. Some of the best shows I've seen
are ones where people are obviously having a lot of fun on stage. One that
comes to mind is a Bill Frisell and Joey Baron duo from a couple of years
ago. They were grinning and mugging at each other and pulling the (musical)
rug out from under each other all night. For me at least it was an
exceptional show, in no small part because of the humor. Both guys were
taking chances that enriched the music tremendously.

Actually, Plimley played in six different groups during the run of the
festival. I live in Seattle, and was only up there during this one show. I
definitely plan on spending more time in Vancouver next year though.

I'm glad he missed me....(I was sitting in the frontrow, and
the stick just missed my right ear!)...or maybe not so glad,
it must be a beautiful piercing you're having!
What a way to impress your friends.
By the way, Bennink is also making little artworks with the remnants
of his demolished drum-skins and sticks, and he has a lot of them.

I'd certainly second your recommendation of the Ponga CD. Very sharp.
Definitely in the rumor category, I heard that there might be a west coast

I agree. I've listened to this about 100 times in the last year, although
I actually just have a tape copy. Is this still officially in print on
CD? Alos, its worth pointing out that they've changed a lot from the
first one (1981?) where they were a five piece and mostly doing
head-solos-head stuff, to the recent 9 (?) piece group which uses more
elaborate arrangements (see "Queen of all Ears").

I've been meaning to ask about this, because I recently heard some of his
from 1985-6 (something with a long title, starting with the letter 'B'),
and it was surprisingly un-extreme. In the liner notes he called it 'fake
electro-acoustic music', I think, dedicated to the INA-GRM, Wergo, and
(some other that I'm forgetting) labels. Very different than _1930_ on
Tzadik, which is much more relentless and brutal, yet still not
undifferentiated. What about the _Rainbow Electronics_ CD? I've heard
that this is a good one but noticed that there are two different versions
of it.
While I'm at it, can anyone who has heard Iancu Dumitrescu's "Pierres
Sacrees" tell me if there is anything similar in either his or anyone
else's work? Specifically, it's the distortion sound that I'm interested
in - I've never heard anything like it. I've heard two other CDs of his
(Medium III and another that's split with Ana Maria Avram) and haven't
heard anything in this vein.
Thanks,
WY

Subject: Anthony Coleman live in Cracow
Hi Philozorners!
A week ago I was lucky to see Antony Coleman's Sephardic Tinge performing
live in Cracow at the 9th Jewish Art Festival. The show was almost 2 hours
long and ended with three encores. Anthony played piano (for those of you
who heard none of his two Tzadik records) with Ben Street (bass), who was
late because his missed the flight to Cracow and Michael Sarin (drums), who
had surgery a week ago - now you know what I mean saying "I was lucky" ;-)
The played sephardic tunes mostly, and Anthony mixed them with latin rhythms
and samba, cha-cha or mambo elements. Jazz was only a platform for free
inprovisation and movement between different influences. His playing was
very rytmic, practicly, he is using the piano as multiple percussive
instrumets (if you think of the hammers in it, piano almost is a percussive
instrument) hitting fast very near or the same notes. It reminded me of a
mentally ill person who spends hours making tremolos with fingers on the
table. This was very "scary" element in Anthony's playing. Most of the
melodies he played were just beautifull, very harmonic, and this "banging on
the piano" was a kind of counterweight for the melodies. Because there was
not much space left for the drum patterns Michael was playing different
percussive instruments, practicly making noisy textures, not rythms.
Sometimes he used one instrument just for one sound. It was far away from
his playing with Dave Douglas in the string project. Some moments were very
quiet, you could hardly hear the instruments (and one f$%# photographer was
making pictures), some moments very loud, when Anthony fell into a kind of
"trance" at the keyboard. He also played by picking the strings inside of
the piano, but to my suprose, he played melodies, to the usual noise like
some other "avant" piano players.
Coleman was in a good mood, drinking somethin between the tunes and telling
funny stories like "when I was in ex-Yugoslavia with my ex-wife..." and
jewish jokes. He wanted to say more, or even stop playing and concentrate on
the dialog with the audience. I met Anthony once again on Wednesday during
the intermission before Michael Alpert's performance, he was very nice,
talking to almost everybody who met him there. I can say that he is a very
interresting person, not only very original musician.
