Changing With The Times is disappointing, a lot of spoken word pieces over
the music. Monads is a lot closer to Homage, although not quite as good. the
Lewis record I like the most is the duet record he did last year with
contrabassist Bertram Turetzky on Incus, Conversations.

i haven't heard "Rainbow Electronics II" (on Dexter's Cigar)
but the original (on Alchemy) and "Crash for Hi-Fi" are
both some of his best work.
personally, my favorite Merzbow is "Artificial Invagination",
a 3" CD released by Vanilla now out of print.

And I thought that you did not like him at all at Victoriaville? Was it the
"quotation" aspect of his turntable playing (as opposed to the new trend
illustrated by Otomo, Martin, etc)?

yeah, his performance at Victo seemed very one-dimensional, mostly digital
drone, as I remember. plus it didn't help that Montera and Doneda were both
pretty boring, especially Montera.
there's some "quotation" style on this disc, but it's more that it's very
varied, with tons of wildly different styles, most of which are done quite
nicely. I've only heard it a couple of times, but it struck me as very fresh,
a rarity in this subgenre.

Well, a short answer is that Brad had Stone Gossard, from Pearl Jam in it.
Stone runs Loosegroove records who put out Critters Buggin releases. The
Drummer and Bass Player from CB have played with torn before...

Though 'Homage' ranks as an all-time fave of mine in any genre and, imo,
nothing Lewis has done as leader really comes all that close, one to
definitely hear is "Chicago Slow Dance", performed with Doug Ewart, J.D.
Parran and Teitelbaum on Lovely Music. More fine use of electronics, but
here in an edgy, skittering fashion on much of the album. Also well
worth hearing from his early works are the duo with Ewart on Black Saint
("Jila-Save! Mon.-The Imaginary Suite") and his "Solo Trombone Record"
on Sackville. As usual, I haven't kept up on the CD availability of
these, though the Sackville's certainly not been re-issued.
Anyone heard music from Ewart in recent years?

Braxton on the Dortmund Quartet CD. Braxton may be the leader, but Lewis

And....in similar fashion, do not, I repeat, do not miss getting
Braxton's "News from the 70's"; great all around but especially for an
astonishing 16 minute, 1976 performance of Holland's "Four Winds" (track
one on 'Conference of the Birds') featuring the quartet with Lewis.
Lewis was still new to the group here (and, what, 22 years old?) but
plays spectacularly!

No, a few jazz musicians got it before (non exhaustive list):
Max Roach
Cecil Taylor
Ornette Coleman
Anthony Braxton
Steve Lacy
Ran Blake
Gunter Schuller
Also, contrary to what I used to believe, Stanley Crouch did not get it for
playing drums behind David Murray :-).

Well, Bowne and company gotta pay those bills...I think in a lot of
cases, as a previous response stated, it has to do with the producers.
For instance, Ron Sexsmith's 'Other Songs' very curiously features
the talents of Dave Douglas, Greg Cohen, Kenny Wollesen, Chris Speed, Josh
Roseman, and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting. This likewise seems
pretty weird, but then you realize that Mitchell Froom was producer on the
session and his solo album 'Dopamine' features most of these same cats.
Though I'm still curious about the whole Holly Palmer/downtown connection.
Her first (and only I think) record has Frisell, Jamie Saft, and Andrew
D'Angelo - to further confuse things, she actually sang a Billie Holiday
tune on Human Feel's most recent album and, if I recall an old Tonic
schedule correctly, has sung in one of Cuong Vu's bands as well. Let's
see if the freshly resurrected from obscurity Steve "Sagacious" Smith can
unravel this one...

I can handle the Prelapse question, since I'm in the band.
Prelapse is:
Alex Lacamoire - piano, organ, samples and such
Mason Wendell - bass and vocals
Dane Johnson - guitar, dobro and fretless guitar
Jeff Hudgins - sax, clarinet
Andy Sanesi - drums
No superstars. We all met in Boston and transcribed the Naked City tunes =
for
fun. when we gave Zorn a tape of our versions of Naked City songs, he gav=
e
us the originals and and lot of pieces he never performed. Prelapse has
three tracks on Zorn's "Music for Children" CD and will have our own
full-length CD on Avant/DIW this fall.

E.F. has a couple of interesting recordings out. 2 with his group chimera.
the first is titled "Chimera" (can't remember the label off hand) the
second is "The Watchman" on Tzadik. Recently, his group Topaz came out with
a recording on Siam records. I think he told me that he'd be releasing a new
recording every year for the next four years on Siam.
If you want to check out stuff he's done with Feldman, i'd recommend his
work with Zorn's Masada String Trio/Masada Ensemble "The Circle Maker" on
Tzadik. he appears on a couple other zorn things such as "film works"
"Masada" and Myra Melford's last two releases. might want to check out
