To download real audio files if they are "streaming" files (.ram or similar)
it may be best to download the .ram file, change the suffix to .txt, open
the file using Notepad, read the location of the .ra file and copy this into
your browsers address box, then right click and save the target. (Hope ths
works.)
I created streaming audio files for my label's web site with a little help
from friends. Real audio is highly compressed and the compromise in sound
quality would be obvious in high fidelity gear. My files are mono just to
add further insult to audiophiles. Other labels give sample segments of
tracks...
To briefly plug two new releases by Bucket Rider here, out in two weeks:
this is five piece band of drum'n'bass and brass. Bulk heavy but with an
impeccably arty foundation. I think hope you enjoy. Best obtained by mail
order or through a distributor like Nail or Surefire in the USA.

You can order the book from www.bentcrayon.com. It was out of stock
recently but I believe a new shipment has come in.
Regarding Zorn's scores, he is currently compiling a catalog.

I was blown away by the Cobra performances. It was the first time I
had seen Cobra live, and as others have mentioned, it makes a big
difference to see the collaborators in action. Both sets (9:00 and 11:30)
consisted of three movements. The entire ensemble presented very
interesting improvisations, but in my opinion, Erik Friedlander, Mark
Feldman, and the percussionists stole the show. (I may be biased because I
have a thing for strings...) My only complaint is that the group should
have played longer.
Zorn did not discuss Cobra at all. Instead, he briefly talked about
Jack Smith's Flaming Creatures and Joseph Cornell's Rose Hobart. He
mentioned that he had worked with Smith in previous years and grew up in
Cornell's neighborhood. You can read more about the first film in Zorn's
essay, "Jack Smith and Flaming Creatures," which is in the Materiali
Sonori book. I enjoyed Flaming Creatures--particularly the amusing lipstick
scene. Smith was influenced by Zorn's second selection, Rose Hobart. It
wasn't exactly what I expected, having only seen Cornell's box
constructions, and not his films before. Zorn did not discuss the last
film, Harry Smith's Heaven and Earth Magic (no. 12). Most people did not
stick around for this hour-long animated film. It reminded me of Zorn's
Theatre of Musical Optics. More info about the films is on the Downtown
Music Gallery's site: www.DTMGallery.com.
I'm interested in what others thought, especially those who have seen
Cobra live before. A few audience members videotaped the performance.
Does anyone know if a recording will be available?

Finally got a chance to pick up this disc. I forget who said that he
(she?) was surprised with it, because it was so quiet and melodic? It being
on ECM, I feared the worse.
However, while it may start off more clamly than your average Brotzmann
or Ayler blast and *swing* in sections, there's certainly enough "out"
playing to impress unrepentent old free jazzers like myself.
As I indicated before, the "strangest" thing about the disc isn't that
Mitchell (who plays ss, as, ts and fl) on it, is not only working with
two other horns -- Hugh Ragin (tmpt)and George Lewis (tmb) --in fine form
- --and a double rhythm section -- Matthew Shipp and Craig Taborn (p);
William Parker and Jarbu Shahid (b) and Tani Tabbal and Gerald Clever
(perc), but that the session's on ECM.
Maybe there's some hope for Manfred Eicher after all.
(or maybe there isn't)

I reassure you, Jaap Blonk is on the "good manic" end of things. I saw him
for the first time at the Victoriaville festival last year and was impressed.
But there is a visual element that I expect is missing on records (I still
don't have any by him...).

UNSOLICITED OPINION, FREE OF CHARGE
No one asked, but I just got the Martin Tetrault / Rene Lussier duo
record on Ambiances Magnetiques, and it rocks the house. Free-
improv, "insect"-improv, definitely noise...lots of stuff happening,
really, really fast. I myself don't care for much of the derek
bailey I've heard (still working on that, though), so don't rely on
the poverse descriptions I'm spewing. Nonetheless---it's the kind of
improv record which, IMHO, lives quite well apart from the idea of
its constitutive PROCESS, yet I find myself thinking, "This would
have been a epiphany if seen live." So as athletic as these men's
music is, I still don't feel the need to WITNESS it, but it would
enhance the experience big time (of course...isn't that always the
case?).
In a few words: it sounds like some incredible theater is transpiring.

Brian (and others):
If you want to hear what Jaap sounds like the internet program Mappings,
hosted by Herb Levy of this list has an 18 minute piece by him first up
in his (Levy's) section of Antenna's avant garde programming.
The URL is: www.antennaradio.com
I just listened to the piece, it resembles dada-esque "sound poetry" rather
than jazz scatting. But I think Blonk would sound a lot better playing off
other instruments than he does going it alone.

I've been listening to this CD on New Tone which just came out - I can't
remember if it's been discussed here...Anyway, it's really excellent and
has some great quartet stuff w/ Dave Holland, Barry Altschul, Kenny
Wheeler, George Lewis, etc. Is it true that this is the only 70s quartet
stuff on CD from A.B. in the seventies? This stuff is a lot easier to
grasp than the 80s quartet (not saying its 'better', but probably a better
starting point).

The LP I got sounds fine; a couple of the songs are a little murky, but
overall it's alright. Anyway, I think this is a really good LP and
personally I'd rate it higher than Science Fiction. It's not as
'interesting' or weird, but it has more 'jazz' stuff which is what I was
hoping for. The almost-double quartet works better, to me, than 'Free
Jazz', in terms of something I'd want to listen to repeatedly, even if
it's not as historic. Sorry to belabor the point about this album, but I
was glad to find it due to being mostly disappointed with Ornette's stuff
after the Golden Circle era, jsut based on what I've been able to hear.

I concur with Patrice. The description is hard to do - mouth sounds of every
description including words and vocalisms, a good share of comedy,
historical roots from the Futurist and turn of the century avantgarde... a
kind of more systematic, rational madness Minton? I have a Cd of the Trio
and it's a blast - I saw him live in Palermo and his absorbing vocal
mannerism and transforming them in musical elements was amazing. Not to be
missed.

Brian - I know you have trouble with free improv vocalists, but I think you'll
find Blonk to be very different. Francesco's description was a good one. Very
wild and spastic and, in my opinion, much more interesting than Phil Minton.
He works really well with Gustafsson on the trio disc with Zerang, but I would
more recommend his two solo sound poetry discs, 'Flux de Bouche' and 'Vocalor'
(both on Staalplaat). Both are great, but go with 'Flux de Bouche' first as
it's sort of a "volume 1" of the pair.
I think the Blonk/Gustafsson/Zerang disc is very good, but Blonk and
Gustafsson (I don't know about Zerang) are such physical musicians that, I
agree with Patrice, this group would be much more fulfilling live. I say go
for it!
Blonk's also got a website, btw, at http://www.bajazzo.xs4all.nl/blonk/, and
he likes to listen and dance to salsa music....
