The Seattle Cobra has been happening about every month for the last four or
so. The lineup changes a little each time, but there is a difinite core of
musicians that have followed the series through, including some of the
following:
Patrick Barber (voice), Carl Farrow (electronics), Bill Horist (guitar),
Jeph Jerman (percussion), Adam McCollum (oud), Stuart MacLeod (vibes), Bill
Moyer (percussion), Dennis Rea (guitar), Brent Arnold (erhu)

I now have two "editions" of Cobra on Hat Art.
Could someone please tell me the difference between editions 2 and 4?
(besides the fact that one is in a paper sleeve over a double jewel box and
the other is in a slimline double jewel case...
What do the other editions look/sound like? How many editions are there?

There were three: "When Was That?" "Just the Facts and Pass the Bucket" and
"Subject to Change." Any word on which two are being reissued? Hope they get
to the first Ronald Shannon Jackson disc, "Eye on You," too...

My Ogun reissue vote would go for L. Moholo 8tet's _Spirits Rejoice_ . It
defines the term "freebop" AFAIC... It's a total joy in which to listen-
even after 100+ trips on my turntable.

I know this is slightly off topic, but it was discussed here a while ago.
Anyways, the soundtrack to "I Want To Live" by Johnny Mandel (Zorn covered
the main theme on "Naked City") was recently re-released by Ryco. It has
the soundtrack album, Gerry Mulligan Jazz combo companion album, and
theatrical trailer on 1 CD. Worth picking up.

Strongly seconded. One of the great pretty much unheard recordings of
the last 25 years. ...Wish he'd have one something remotely as good
since then, but the Viva La Black recordings I've heard aren't in the
same league.

Indeed. Those Viva La Black albums come nowhere close.
On a sidebar- I've seen some bad-mouthing of Kenny Wheeler on a certain
Usenet NG in recent times. This LP possibly holds his most shining moments.
I don't think it would be the LP it is with anyone else in his place.

Kenny has been getting raves on the Pynchon List.

I'd like to know what the chances are of finding this one on vinyl. I recall
that there are two different "I Want To Live" soundtrack albums out there, as
indicated above.

It is a little bit hard to say that. There are many other musicians on this
record that I could say the same thing. Kenny is one of many who made this
record what it is: a fantastic and joyful record.

A newby had 'nudeants' in their email address. I erroneously remembered
that as a Kenny Wheeler title and made mention of it. The addressee
corrected me re: its Jarrett origins but said he was a huge Kenny Wheeler
fan and was glad to see his name pop up on the list however erroneously.
Several P-listers ran out and bought Kenny Wheeler recordings and
re-appeared later to post their gratitude for having been introduced to
such lovely music. This was all on topic, because the discussion was of
'Vineland' at that time, and one of the main characters is Zoyd Wheeler.
Yes, I know it's off topic here, but I was ASKED!

Why do jazz musicians all seem to have "cutesy" boy names like Johnny,
Woody, Bobby, etc?

All jazz musicians are cute. Even the most grizzled octogenarian exudes
cuteness from the moment he puckers up and blows, pounds the ivories or
skins, or twangs his magic twanger. Usually the cute name and behavior
are just an act, a con, and the cutesy affectation belies a sociopathic
personality that makes Stalin look like Sinatra. One should especially
beware of grandfatherly types who grin and roll their eyes while
playing. Most likely they're planning the overthrow of this nation's
government while tossing off a complicated riff. I'd trust a musician
named Milton a lot farther than one named Bobby.

Distantly Zorn related (Danny Heifetz-Mr. Bungle-John Zorn?) but one
of my favorite bands none the less, Dieselhed will be playing April
16 in London at the ULU. However it may be opening for Cake. Too bad.
And if you can make it to England a day early, Dave Douglas's Tiny
Bell Trio is playing on the 11th in Cheltenham.

Oh well- forgot the "IMO", I suppose...;-)
I was mainly stressing the occasional flaming that Mr. Wheeler gets on the
rec.music.bluenote NG. One thread there was called something to the effect
of "Bad fluglehorn players whose initials are K.W." But then again, that NG
can be rather moronic at times...

Subject: Panties verse the Cosms.
Got the recent Yoshihide-with-spoken-word releases.
PantyChrist is by far the better of the two. The music done by Yoshihide
works very well with Bond's humourous stories. I've never been much on
spoken word, but this stuff is done well. Lots of voice used, not simply
the drawl boring speak. Plus Ostertag does fine editing that makes it all
flow well.
Microcosms is Yoshihide and Tenko. I thought this would be my preference,
given that Tenko is Japanese and the vocals would just kinda blend in as
music. No such luck. They blend somewhat, but not as well as the Bond
pieces. Plus many tracks simply end cold, no editing at all. Finally,
they even used the piece from _Untitled (Ten)_ compilation with a few
vocals dropped on top. The full album isn't all that bad, but just doesn't
seem well developed. This is also the first Yoshihide project I've seen
where he credits sources (Dubsonice/Madmax/Stock Hausen & Walkman).
Both however stay away from tones and pulses, which Yoshihide's been doing
(way too much) lately. That type of sound needs to stay in the realm of
Ikeda, who does it best. [Though the recent Sachiko M/Toshimaru Nakamura
on Meme is quite excellent.]

It seems to imply that Haino really only cuts it as a full on screamer. I like that
side of his playing (love Fushitsusha) but Purple Trap seems more to do with
interaction and interplay with the rythmn. That said Ali is a fine drummer for this
interplay (he certainly suited Coltrane's late stuff better than Elvin Jones) though
I have agree that Laswell brings little to the party but a lo-end drone.
Laswell's new Tzadik - Invisible Design - is so lacking in anything creative I think
the label quality control engine is off-line. Much better is Hashisheen - End of Law
on Sub Rosa which certainly has its moments.
