I've got 2 or 3 of the LPs- can't recall the titles now. I bought the first
one thinking it would be nothing but drums and percussion, but it had other
non-percussive instruments (and vocals) too. While these are not "Afropop"
per se, they're not exactly "field recordings" either- something in-between.

Not to nit-pick, but the photo on the s/t Naked City album was by Weegee from
his book "Naked City" (hmm... coincidence?) - I haven't seen the Sante book, but
I imagine it could have been reprinted in there for some reason as well... -

There is no "original source text" for many of these images - they just reside
in the collective cultural baggage of the 20th century Western society. Those
Heirens photos, for example, are featured in any decent book on serial killers.
The original source here would be the Chicago Police Dept. archives.
What is more interesting is WHY Zorn (and many others) are so attracted to
these images and the stories they tell. The answer to this lies in the
fascination of man with sex and death - two topics that have been explored in
close connection by all the imagery we're speaking about here. Bataille cites
the Leng Tch'e photos as a prime example of Ecstasy derived from fear of death,
that can be compared to Ecstasy derived from sexual arousal. The connection
between sex and death is obvious in all the serial killer related material.
The Torture Garden material speaks for itself, too (I would really recommend
reading the book by Octave Mirbeau). And the list goes on.

www.brechtforum.org
Piano Players(no piano) -- A special benefit concert features Myra Melford,
Cooper-Moore, Dominic Duval, David Gross, Kali Fasteau
Join the Brecht Forum for a special concert to benefit the Brecht Forum's
new piano, as some of the best improvising pianists in the city stretch out
on other instruments. The concert, on Friday, April 16 at 7:30 pm features
Myra Melford on harmonium with poet Reuben Jackson, along with Cooper-Moore
on homemade and percussion instruments and Kali Fasteau on a variety of
instruments. These pianists will be complemented by Dominic Duval & David
Gross in an accoustic/electric bass duo, who have joined in to contribute to
the cause of this new performance space acquiring a much-needed piano.
The concert is part of the Brecht Forum's new, year-round Neues Kabarett
series, at 122 West 27th Street, 10th Floor, between 6th and 7th Avenues in
Manhattan. $10-25 sliding scale admission. For information call 212-242-4201.
The Brecht Forum is a cultural and educational center for people working for
fundamental change and a society that puts human needs first. Neues
Kabarett is a new series of avant-garde and experimental jazz started in
October 1998. Since then, we have presented seven concerts and a panel
discussion co-sponsored with the Noise Action Coalition that explored
economic justice for musicians. The series continues in April with this
piano benefit and two concerts highlighting small New York-based labels.
Upcoming events will include dance performances and a festival highlighting
the contributions of innovative jazz composers who are women. The April 16
benefit is the first activity in a fundraising campaign that includes a
raffle, silent auction of artworks, a second benefit concert in July
(pianists playing the new piano) and other events.

Steve Miller, who sadly, passed away last year. Both releases are
more melodic than free, and both are quite charming(and hopelessly
out-of-print).
Cohill had a few records as a leader on Ogun(now there's a
back catalog that deserves a full reissue) One is "The Joy of
Paranoia" which has an electric band on one side and duo's with
Pianist Veryan Weston on the other, and "Diverse" which I'm not
familiar with. There was also a duo LP with Weston, and another with
Fred Frith, entitled ":French Gigs". Coxhill also has had a
concurrent career as an actor, popping up on various British produced
things that have made their way to PBS.

no no feel free to nitpick. i thought i saw the same in photo in the sante
book, but it may have been something that simply looked similar. the sante
book is about 100(?) photos of crime scenes all shot in b/w. i stand
corrected.

It's on Earthworks/Virgin.
Another good album with Dudu Pukwana is Johnny Dyani's Witchdoctor's Son
on Steeplechase. Stylistically it's more diverse. It starts off with
an Ornette-ish freebob tune, then there a couple of Pukwana
compositions,
a Brazilian style piece and finally a long but very nice African groove
piece. Unfortunately Steeplechase doesn't seem to have a U.S.
distributor
at the moment so it might be hard to find. A pity because after getting
Pierre Dorge's Brikama, I wanted to get some more.

Subject: Greatest Improviser Poll Results
Zornlist Greatest Improviser of the 20th Century Poll Results
Zornlist respondents were extremely jazz oriented and mindful of that
tradition. Other improvising styles -- rock, blues, latin, Indian,
African, etc. -- went virtually unrecognized. One could want for more
than the 21 ballots cast but hell, there're critics polls that have
less, and there is a clear theme or two that emerge from this sampling.
Thanks to all who played, and extra thanks to those who offered their
comments -- all of which were enjoyed. If you post comments to the list
about this poll, try to be thoughtful and insightful. We probably all
agree that this is primarily of amusement value. I doubt we'll see CBS
record a Cecil/Derek duet and bill them as the third and fourth
greatest improvisors of the 20th century named by the Zornlist.
Although that would be quite an amusement.
Rank Artist Points (First place votes) (Total # of ballots listing
this artist)
1. John Coltrane 49 (5) (12)
2. Charlie Parker 31 (5) (7)
3. Cecil Taylor 22 (1) (7)
4. Derek Bailey 17 (1) (5)
5. Louis Armstrong 16 (2) (5)
6. (tie)
Miles Davis 15 (0) (5)
Ornette Coleman 15 (0) (5)
8. John Zorn 13 (0) (6)
9. Peter Brotzmann 10 (1) (4)
10. Evan Parker 8 (1) (2)
11. (tie)
Anthony Braxton 7 (1) (2)
Eye 7 (1) (2)
Bill Frisell 7 (1) (2)
Fred Frith 7 (0) (4)
Keith Jarrett 7 (1) (2)
16. (tie)
Eric Dolphy 6 (0) (2)
Jimi Hendrix 6 (0) (2)
With the exception of Monk, Tatum and Zappa (two ballots each), the
artists listed below were named on one ballot only.
18. (tie with 5 points)
Anthony Coleman, Joey Baron, Vyacheslav Ganelin, Allan Holdsworth,
Charlie Haden
23. (tie with 4 points)
Wayne Krantz, Charles Mingus, Leo Smith, Ken Vandermark, Tony
Williams, Frank Zappa
29. (tied with 3 points)
Alice Coltrane, Tom Cora, Thomas Chapin, Jerry Garcia, Ella
Fitzgerald, Eyvind Kang, Steve Lacy, Ikue Mori,Marc Ribot
39. (tied with 2)
Albert Ayler, Bill Evans, Leroy Jenkins, Paul Lovens, John McLaughlin,
Thelonious Monk, Eddie Provost, Art Tatum
45. (tied with 1)
Chuck Berry, Clifford Brown, Milford Graves, Robert Johnson, Umezu
Kazutoki, Shawn Lane, Phil Minton, Lee Morgan
Scoring: First place votes received five points, second=4, third=3,
fourth=2, fifth=1. Total number of votes cast may not equal 105 (21
ballots x five votes each) since some ballots had two artists tied for
fifth (hence six artists named) while others submitted ballots with
less than five artists. Total number of first place votes exceeds 21
because some ballots had two artists tied for first.
This poll is not endorsed, sanctioned or officially connected with the
zornlist or John Zorn, although ballots were solicited from the
zornlist exclusively.
