Sorry about that vacant message. I missed the button I was aiming at.
In any case, Ben said:
> Keep an eye out for online coupons for MusicBlvd., CDNow, etc.
www.esmarts.com has a bunch of coupons. Musicblvd is a good one. They have a
deal that allows you a free cd for every ten you order. There are always lots
of coupons for them. I have yet to pay full price for any of my purchases from
them.
> Also
> http://www.everycd.com list their Masada CDs from $13.97 - $16.48 (and Naked
> City CDs for $15.82!), which is the cheapest I've seen them online without
> coupons. Be warned, however: ever since everycd.com put out those full-page

They also have a deal - I noticed in yesterday's New York Times - that if you
look for a cd that they don't have, they'll give you two free. I'm sure that we
can all find cds pretty readily that they don't have. (I've found at least one
that's not in their online catalog - Graham Connah's _Snaps erupt at pure
spans_.)
However, let me warn you. They are extremely anti-customer service. Their
prices, which seem low at first, are offset by extraordinarily high shipping
charges which make the value good only if you are buying over $100 of cds. Even
then, the price is further offset by the $40 "membership" fee.
(Yes, I did have a bad experience with them. However, even without that
experience - which involved ordering $200+ worth of cds, and which, if I had to
figure in the membership fee, would not have led to any great savings on my part
- - I would not recommend them. In brief, my experience was that I had ordered
these cds from them in part because they promised on their website that they
would ship everything US priority mail. They shipped my cds UPS. (The reason,
they said, was that only UPS would allow them to properly insure packages worth
more than $100. I checked with the post office; that was false.) My cds,
instead of arriving in a couple of days, as they would had they been shipped
priority mail, took 3 weeks. When I called wondering about the shipment, they
refused to help me, telling me that any problems I had were with UPS. There's
more to the story, but I don't need to vent. I just want to warn you not to
expect good customer service from them.)

it's a collaboration between Eugene and Camper Van Beethoven. I wouldn't say
it's a good introduction to Chadbourne, but it is a very enjoyable record.
there are tons of covers, including Reason To Believe, a hilarious Zappa
medley, Ballad of Easy Rider, and Careful With That Axe, Eugene, complete with
screaming. plus some topical Chadbourne tunes. definitely worth picking up for
five bucks.
as for the best intro to Chadbourne, it's a tough one, becauae he has so many
different styles. I'd go for the Solo Acoustic Guitar, Volume 2 that Rastascan
just reissued for his playing. for his singing, nothing jumps to mind as
completely essential. maybe the Camper Van is the best one for that after all.

As far as I know,
"there'll be no tears tonight" (1980 - Parachute Records, P013
(LP)1987; Fundamental (USA), 6 (LP))
and
"LSD C&W" ( 1987 - Fundamental, Save 19/20 (2xLP)
are completely different records, at least from the song names
(I only have the latter 2LP). Eugene Chadbourne in his article in the Sonora
book
refers to it as a 2LP/2CD.
This rings a bell, but I think the CD (just one) was less interesting to me
because it did not have the entire 2LP on it.
Anybody seen the CD, or able to give the exact reference?

sorry about my laziness to check text formatting on my last message. I
figured I should reprint it (if anyone cares). I also wanted to ask about a
few specific Zorn albums and related items:
1. Ganryu Island: Does it sound anything like the hatHut Rodan album (NOT
the famous group featuring members of the Rachels June of 44, Hoover, etc.
etc...)
2. Yankees
3. Availability of the Chadbourne/Zorn cd and book (where can you order)
4. Title/availability of the documentary on violence which featuress music
from torture garden
Thanks again, and sorry for my previous glitch (and for this rambling
message)
Zornophiles:
While watching the X-Files this week (1/24/99), I saw a Microsoft commercial
(something about a lady running a hand lotion business) which featured
Zorn's main title score from "White and Lazy".(FILMWORKS 1 cd)
featuring
Robert Quine, melvin Gibbs <<Rollins Band, Harriet Tubman>>, Arto Lindsay,
Anton Fier, Carol emmanuel, David Weinstein, and Ned Rothenberg.
I guess one of Weiden and Kennedy's clients, besides Nike and Sega (remember
the blasts ofTorture Garden in an old Sonic the Hedgehog commercial?) is
Microsoft.
Other Zorn news: a nod to the lesbian s/m porno "Elegant Spanking" which
Zorn scored (one of the filmworks cds as well) in the Feb. issue of Details,
from a list of the best lesbian films of all time (Elizabeth Hurley on the
front cover.)

Very true... It's just TBNTT has the phrase "LSD C&W" on it (in fact, if I
remember correctly it's on the spine where the title ought to be or
someplace prominent like that) and is often (understandably) confused with
the other one. I forgot that there actually WAS a release titled LSD C&W
(don't own it- probably should). Sorry 'bout that.

Its called "Loss of the Innocents" (the one about TWA), and the CD is
Banquet. As for Dresser recommendations, his stuff with Gerry Hemingway's
groups is great as well. My favorite is "Johnny's Corner Song" w/ Ellery
Eskelin, Robin Eubanks, Dresser and Hemingway. It has a nice long
Dresser solo, too. There are also about 6 CDs
of Hemingway/Dresser/Michael Moore/Ernst Reijseger/Wolter Weirbos which
are pretty well acclaimed, but I've only heard one.

These are actually different albums, both w/ Zorn. LSD C + W also has a
long Beatles medley, a Love song, "In a Sentimental Mood", and some
others. It is out of print, but I found it on used vinyl about 2 weeks
ago. There'll be No Tears Tonite is not as screwed up, but its just as
good if not better. This is a studio album, with some solo performances.
Also out of print, same label. I have not heard him match these in terms
of rock/country oriented stuff, but if anyone has let me know!
He seems to be having a little bit of a renaissance lately, doing less
humor and political stuff and more "serious" stuff, although it still has
a sense of humour, in a good way.
Getting a good intro to Chadbourne is like getting a good intro to Zorn -
trying to do this in one album is misleading. (Why I disn't get excited
about either at first).

not really. Ganryu Island is all duets with Zorn and is towards the louder
side, while Michihiro's Rodan, although I haven't heard it in a long time,
features him playing with a wide variety of musicians (Frisell, Frith, Tenko,
Cora, Baron, Dresser, Hemingway, Marclay, etc.), with each track being a
different small group combo. I remember it being much quieter and more
beautiful than GI, but maybe someone who's heard it more recently can chime
in.

I wouldn't mind a small recapitulation of reviews of Dresser releases
myself as I'm fairly unfamiliar with his own work outside of the Arcado
trio. I caught him a couple of weeks ago (Merkin Hall, NYC) in a
performance of several pieces of his of a somewhat classical bent and

Dresser also performed a very strong solo piece, demonstrating his rich
facility with the bow.

Sorry for the lack of direct Zorn content, but I was just wondering if the
often talked about Willisau Quartet 4CD is really better than the 2 CD
Santa Cruz set, or if it is just a bigger version of a similar thing. On
Gerry Hemingway's web site, he mentions the Santa Cruz set as his favorite
recording by the band...
Also, does anyone know about the new domestic Derek Bailey CD w/ Kaoru Abe
and Toshinori Kondo and (someone else). I think its from the late 70s.

P.S. Did the "Orchestra Variations" premiere at the New York Philharmic
not happen? I read about this in the New Yorker (supposed to be 1/22 -
1/24), but I guess I would have heard about it by now if anyone saw it (?)
