Just to thank James Hale for his recommendation on
Martin/Turcotte/Haynes' Get Together Weather (Unity/Page).
It took me two months to get it through Verge but it's a disc worth
having, no matter the time.
The level of concentration and creativity is stunning, also great
playing throughout and compelling arrangements; all in all a highly
recommended CD for any TBT fan or music lover.
Finally, you're right James: It's too bad that this trio isn't better
known outside Canada.
Seek it out!

It should probably be pointed out that there is a difference between "free
improv", and "free form". The former is a bunch of people improvising,
while the latter describes music with little or no structure (so the former
is an example of the latter, but the two aren't the same).

"out to lunch" on blue note would be apropos. it is also commonly
acknowledged as one of the few absolute post-wwII jazz classics.

I would even go further: an absolute post-wwI jazz classics :-).
If you like Dolphy with Coltrane, you should also check him with Mingus.
There is a Dolphy record that has always puzzled me (a late Blue Note with a
red picture, can't remember the name right now). It presents various aspects
of Dolphy's talent: wild alto solo, duo with Indian music, etc. Not a first
buy, but really worth to get to assess where he could have gone.

That's Other aspects. BT85131.Sessions from 60 and 62.It's actually a b&w
pic but the banner is in red. I have to agree with Patrice. It's a
fascinating pointer to where Dolphy could have gone. After hearing this, and
many of the other posthumous Dolphy releases you'll wonder if he ever played
in the same context twice. He really was going in amazing directions.

That's it. Sure it is in print. I saw the CD just a couple weeks ago at

One of my faves (besides Out To Lunch) is a Mingus collection, "In A Soulful

worth the price of admission IMHO. "Mingus At Antibes" also shouldn't be
missed.

after you get Out To Lunch, my favorite Dolphy is the Five Spot discs on
Prestige with a quintet of Booker Little, Mal Waldron, Richard Davis and Ed
Blackwell. also, Far Cry on Prestige is pretty great, and features Dolphy on
alto, bass clarinet, and flute.

Agreed. "Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus" (Candid), with Dolphy,
Mingus, Ted Curson (tmpt) and Dannie Richmond (d) is absolutely
essential. Shows what a *typical* Mingus club set would have been like.
"Live At Antibes" (Atlantic) isn't up to that standard, but it does add
Booker Ervin on ts.

There is no doubt both CDs are great. Geroge Graewe "Melodie un Rhythmus"
with Hamid Drake (perc, dr), Frank Gratkowski (reeds) and Kent Kessler (b)
is my fav Graewe recording. So interesting pianism you can also enjoy in
duo with Braxton ("Amsterdam 1991" Okka) and in "Flex 27" -another great
session with Ernst Reijseger (cello) and Gerry Hemingway (dr). You can't
miss it.
I think the Brotzman Octet/Tentet is one of the most important recordings
in the last year.
The musicians staff is superb: Mars Williams, Ken Vandermark, Jeb Bishop,
Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee... the most powerful reedmen from now and then.
And a beautiful packaging too.

Hi all,
For those interested in more Mark Dresser, I'd just like to
enthusiastically second Denman's post. I'm not that familiar with the
"Caligari" disc, but "Force Green" and "Tambastics" are splendid. The
former was my introduction to Bleckmann (great) and the latter is a unique
summit of wonderfully textural players. Denman rulz on both.
And hey, Denman: any new stuff upcoming from these bands?
Finally, all the Hemingway quintet stuff on Hat is great, but probably now
out of print. Great Dresser on Bendian's "Interzone" too.

I got this video recently, it's called "The Guitar Artistry of Bill
Frisell". It's a excellent video, Frisell tells a lot about his
approach to the music and the instrument. It's not about the
technique, but if somebody likes exercises, Vai video is more
appropriate ;-)
The copy I have is in NTSC, and I don't think PAL is available, since
the guy who ordered it for me in US could only get NTSC. I was never
so happy that I spent some extra money for the NTSC compatible TV and
VCR!
Try to contact Songline / Tone Field Productions (www.songtone.com),
it's not their production (Rittor Music Japan and WB worldwide
distribution) , but I'm sure they can tell you more.

It certainly happened. It was an interesting performance, if not as fine and
fully formed a work as Zorn's quartets and other chamber music pieces. There
were fine moments in the brief piece, but it didn't necessarily hang together
as a whole for this listener. There were typical Zornian musicial devices, as
well as pastiches of stylistic quirks of a variety of "established" modern
orchestral composers. And it was a mere nine minutes in length.
I'd also guess that it was in some sense a "work in progress," in that Zorn
was not only present but sitting in a balcony with a score and pencil in
hand. If it had hit me as a stunning piece at the time, you can bet I'd have
typed furiously at that moment. Which is *not* to say that I think Zorn is
incapable of writing for the orchestra. I'm still absorbing "Aporias," for
instance...
On the other hand, Zorn's piece was the most interesting thing on the
program... the Schwanter Percussion Concerto was a lot of flashy fun but not
especially deep music. And I'm not completely certain what the rest of the
program was... William Schuman's "New England Triptych" was the opener, I
believe, and at the end was Copland's complete "Billy the Kid," if I remember
correctly.
And the orchestra, at least, played a lot better for Slatkin in this program
than they did in the heinous concert I'd previously heard under his direction,
when he led Ellington's "Harlem" (an unmitigated disaster), Ives's Third
Symphony, and two pieces by Adams, the Violin Concerto and "Slonimsky's
Earbox." But then, that concert almost sounded like a purposeful slam on
Slatkin... when the orchestra played a Piazzolla piece as an encore conducted
by Adams, they purred like a kitten.
